"President Shan, what’s going on here?"
Dan Biao looked at Yang Hui, who had clearly come to hold him accountable, and felt a flicker of panic.
’That’s right, the guy’s face is ice-cold. He’s definitely here to raise hell.’ Dan Biao thought about how this troublemaker had just caused an earthquake in the company. He’d heard Zhang Li had been chewed out so bad he cried. Wang Xiao had also emerged from President Li’s office with a grim expression.
’What’s he doing? Is he coming after me this time?’
Dan Biao suddenly realized he was a little afraid of him. Wasn’t this a complete reversal of the natural order? He tried to pump himself up, but then he recalled the troublemaker’s track record, and his shoulders slumped. ’Forget it. I’ll just cave.’
"Yang Hui, listen to me. All the brands in the company are facing difficulties right now. Thanks to the massive support from Xinyue Group this month, your numbers are already leading the pack. But Zhang Li’s Erke is under a lot of pressure, so I need you to show some team spirit and help out a struggling team."
"Help him out? How old is he? Even his own father isn’t obligated to take care of him anymore, so why should I?"
’Is this a joke?’ If they were on good terms and he’d come to discuss it, maybe he’d consider helping. But Zhang Li was an asshole who did nothing but mock him. ’Me, help him out? Not a chance.’
"If you fall behind, you take a beating. And when you get beaten, you stand up straight and take it. This will teach him a lesson, and only then can he turn shame into motivation and learn to work hard."
Dan Biao was getting a headache. He had his own selfish reasons for this; as the sales director, if the Erke brand performed poorly, he’d have to bear some of the responsibility. He couldn’t help but curse Zhang Li internally. ’Why the hell did you have to go and provoke him?’
’This troublemaker doesn’t even respect your uncle, Boss Li. Where did you get the confidence to pick a fight with him? Now look. He’s refusing to help, and you and I will have to take the fall for Erke’s poor performance.’
"A Hui, this request form has been signed by the boss and filed with the company. It’ll be hard to explain if we don’t execute it."
"That’s not my problem. No one bothered to inform me before you started reallocating my resources."
He glanced at the time and stood up. "President Shan, I need to pack up and head to Xinyue Square."
Dan Biao scratched his head. This was a real mess. The boss had approved the request form. If he didn’t execute it, they could wave the boss’s signature in his face and demand to know why.
But if he did execute it... The troublemaker hadn’t said anything overtly threatening, but Dan Biao knew that if he didn’t do as he was told, there would be retaliation.
’Zhang Li, oh, Zhang Li, you son of a bitch. Of all the people to piss off, why him? Now I’m the one taking the heat because of you.’
After Yang Hui left, Dan Biao called Zhang Li over. It was obvious that Zhang Li hadn’t yet recovered from the tongue-lashing he’d received from Li Yang that morning, but his resentment was mainly directed at Yang Hui.
"Zhang Li, about that resource allocation request for the Yida Department Store consumer subsidy vouchers... we can’t execute it. You’ll have to overcome the difficulties on your own."
Not executing it? Zhang Li immediately cried out, "President Shan, President Li himself signed off on that! How can you just decide not to execute it? Besides, Erke’s operations are in such a difficult spot right now. Without that support, what’s going to happen to this month’s performance?"
"Zhang Li, resources are just a minor path. True performance improvement comes from raising operational standards, from the morale and sales skills of your store staff. You still don’t have a sufficient understanding of this."
"President Shan, I don’t agree with that. Improving basic operations isn’t something that can be done overnight. Subsidy resources can produce immediate results. We should be tackling this from both sides."
Dan Biao put down the pen he was signing with and folded his arms.
’Like I don’t know that? Who told you to go and piss off that troublemaker?’
He sneered, "Zhang Li, let’s be honest. You were poaching those resources from the Airex brand. Now Yang Hui is against it, and my hands are tied."
It would have been one thing if Yang Hui’s name hadn’t come up, but at the mention of it, Zhang Li’s hackles went up. "Who the hell does he think he is? This company’s name is Li, not Yang! He’s just an employee. His only duty is to obey. What right does he have to allocate resources?"
Dan Biao threw up his hands. "I can’t make the call. If you have a problem, go find President Li."
He didn’t want to get involved. He couldn’t afford to offend either side, so why get stuck in the middle?
"Fine. I’ll go find President Li."
’Yesterday’s email incident, I was in the wrong, so I couldn’t win against him. But this resource allocation thing... Yang Hui has gone too far.’ At the same time, Zhang Li knew Li Yang’s personality well. When it came to company resources, whatever he said, went. When was it ever up to a subordinate to decide allocation?
’Hmph, Yang Hui, you’re walking right into the boss’s line of fire this time. He hates employees like this the most. Let’s see if you survive this.’
He went back to his desk and made a phone call, asking Cai Miao if Li Yang had any time. He had something to report.
Cai Miao asked what it was about, because Dan Biao was his direct supervisor. Without a special reason, it was impossible for him to report directly to Li Yang.
"Yang Hui is getting too arrogant. The boss signed off on the mall subsidy resource allocation, but he’s refusing to accept it. I’m going to report him."
A flash of delight crossed Cai Miao’s face. This was great. Someone was going after Yang Hui, and she would definitely cooperate.
A short while later, she called Zhang Li back. "The boss wants you in his office in twenty minutes."
Zhang Li had just left. Dan Biao was massaging his forehead with both hands, trying to get a moment of peace, when he was surprised by a knock on the door. Yang Hui came in again.
"President Shan, I forgot something."
He quickly pulled himself together and sat up straight. "A Hui, sit down, take your time. There’s no rush."
Yang Hui was already holding his briefcase, ready to leave. Why would he sit down? He remained standing and said, "I heard the company is adjusting salaries in June. My team’s recent performance has been excellent, so they should be getting raises, right? What’s the total raise budget allocated to my team, and how much is each person getting?"
Hearing that this was the issue, Dan Biao gave a wry smile. "A Hui, the decision-making power for salary increases rests entirely with President Li. Whether you know the details or not won’t change the outcome."
"As a department head, I don’t even have the right to be informed about my own team’s raises? I don’t have any say in how the raise budget for my team is distributed among individuals? Then what exactly am I managing?"
Back when he was at Ruijing Commerce, the group would provide a total budget for raises each year. President Zhao would be responsible for the supervisors’ raises, and each team would be given a total raise budget for the supervisor to decide who got a raise and how much.
Now at Futong Commerce, not only did he not know if his team could get raises, or how much, he couldn’t even decide how to distribute them. With a supervisor like that, would his subordinates even listen to him?
"A Hui, Futong Commerce has been like this since it was founded. You shouldn’t get hung up on this."
"No. Please give him my feedback, President Shan. I need to know my department’s total raise budget for this period, and I must be involved in deciding how it’s allocated to each person."
Just as Dan Biao’s head was about to explode, Yang Hui dropped another line: "Otherwise, it will affect our work performance."
