"Damn, the audacity."
Li Lei glanced at Dan Biao and understood. The guy was playing dumb. It wasn't that he didn't know about the affair; he just didn't want to ask.
'Fine, you're slick. Our President Jia knows you, too, which means my plan to question Futong Commerce's management and get Li Yang to punish you is a no-go. But I can use this as an excuse not to cooperate with your work at Futong Commerce, right? Any support I could offer in the future? I'll just throw a wrench in the works instead. I can't beat you, but I can sure as hell make your life miserable, right?'
"President Shan, let's call it a day. I'll report what you just mentioned to the company. But, like I said, don't get your hopes up. Our budget is tight, and we've never offered this kind of promotional resource outside of a holiday season."
Dan Biao nodded. He wasn't holding out much hope anyway. Just as he was about to get up and leave, Li Lei's phone rang.
He picked it up, glanced at the screen, and immediately sat bolt upright. It was obvious the caller was someone he deeply respected. "Hello, sir!"
Dan Biao couldn't tell if it was the Director of Sales or President Jia on the line, but he heard Li Lei say, "Yes, sir. Understood. I'll arrange it immediately. I guarantee they'll be able to use it by tomorrow."
After hanging up, Li Lei looked at Dan Biao with a complicated expression, his mind reeling. 'Who the hell is this Yang Hui,' he thought, 'to make President Jia bend the rules for him?'
"President Shan, that call was about the promotional subsidies for Futong Commerce. I have some good news and some bad news."
'About the subsidies for Futong Commerce? Did President Li call President Jia? No, that's impossible. Why would he have sent me here if he did?'
Then Li Lei said, "The good news is, my superior said that starting tomorrow, for this month, we're giving Futong Commerce 100 promotional subsidy coupons for 100 off every 1000."
Dan Biao was ecstatic. It felt like a gift from the heavens. Li Yang hadn't even expected this much; 50 coupons would have been a nice gesture, but they had gotten 100.
"That's amazing, thank you so much! Our NLB store is also running a '10% off for two items' sale. Stacking these promotions will give us an edge over the NLB at Xinyue Square."
Li Lei sighed. "The bad news is, those coupons can only be used for Airex."
Dan Biao's smile froze on his face. He was completely stunned. What the hell kind of good news was this? It would have been better to get nothing at all.
He put it together in an instant. This had to be the support Yang Hui had just requested from President Jia. What was he supposed to do now? If he'd come back empty-handed, the worst he'd face was a lecture from Li Yang.
But now, Airex had gotten support while NLB had not. Li Yang would definitely call him incompetent to his face. He could perfectly imagine Li Yang slamming his desk and roaring, "Xiaodan, you useless trash! NLB is a top brand, and you couldn't get any support for it? But your subordinate managed to? You might as well go find a block of tofu and kill yourself!"
What a mess. With a bitter smile, Dan Biao said, "Manager Li, look, if Airex can get support, surely you can try to make a case for a great brand like NLB with your superiors?"
"Can't be done. These 100 coupons were already advanced from the budget for a future event. Why don't you go find President Jia yourself and see if he'll give them to NLB instead of Airex?"
'Find him? My ass. Who the hell am I to President Jia? And don't even get me started on trying to pry those resources out of Yang Hui's hands. The guy ignored Li Yang's signature. What does that make me? Nothing.'
'Whatever. The worst that can happen is I go back and get an earful. I'm used to it by now anyway.'
Inside the Uniqlo, Zhu Jing browsed for a bit but couldn't find any styles she liked. Noticing that Yang Hui wasn't the patient type, she decided to just let it go and come back to shop by herself another time.
As they left the store, Yang Hui smacked his lips. "And here I was, hoping we could recreate that famous Sanlitun Uniqlo scene. A real shame."
Zhu Jing, used to his teasing by now, had learned to fire back. "You really want to? Fine. Let's go to a fitting room. I'll cooperate."
Yang Hui looked her over. Zhu Jing was wearing a grass-green A-line dress, its hem swaying lightly with her steps, tracing a playful arc about four inches above her knees. The tailored cut accentuated her slender waist, while the slightly flared skirt made her legs look exceptionally long and straight.
An outfit like that would be very... convenient... in a fitting room.
Even though he knew she was joking, he couldn't help but feel a stir of desire; he'd been holding back for a while. Of course, he couldn't actually drag her back to a Uniqlo fitting room—they weren't at that stage yet. These things required a gradual approach, letting them unfold naturally.
Inside the NLB store on the first floor of Xinyue Square, the scene was a whirlwind of activity. Yang Na clapped her hands, signaling for everyone to pause.
"I've booked a private room at the Sichuan restaurant upstairs. Everyone go eat first, then we'll come back down and finish up."
The store manager protested, "Boss, we can just grab some fast food. A restaurant upstairs is too extravagant, isn't it?"
Yang Na smiled. "Here at Yanghe Commerce, we never short-change our own. We might have high expectations for everyone, but as you'll soon find out, we're also more than willing to pay for it."
Many of these people were from her old team, so their conversation was relaxed. A few of them shouted, "We don't have to wait! We see it today! From now on, we're selling our souls to Yanghe Commerce!"
Shen Meng watched them, thinking how wonderful this family-like atmosphere was. It lacked the oppressive air of Futong Commerce. No one needed to be pushed to work; everyone was self-motivated, putting in 120 percent effort.
'Perhaps Yang Hui was right after all. "I for everyone, and everyone for me." In a group like this, every individual would fight desperately to protect it. Not just for the sake of the team, but for their own sake as a part of it.'
The construction hoardings hadn't been completely removed yet. Since stocking the shelves was a messy process that would detract from the mall's image, they planned to get all the products displayed during the day, then remove the barriers at night for the grand opening tomorrow.
That afternoon, Zhang Li arrived at the first floor of Xinyue Square. The moment he stepped out of the subway station, he saw the massive outdoor screen in the mall's plaza blaring an advertisement for NLB. It featured the words, "Grand Opening on Month XX, Day XX. We look forward to seeing you!" And, of course, it prominently advertised the "100 off every 1000" promotion.
All this hype... He thought about his own stores, which had all opened without a peep. The comparison was just depressing.
Once inside Xinyue Square, he was greeted by another shock—a massive banner hanging all the way from the third floor. It was another NLB ad. 'It's just one store opening,' he thought. 'Do you really need to go for this level of saturation bombing with your advertising?'
He opened the official Xinyue Square app, "Xinyue Shopping." The top banner on the homepage was, yet again, an ad for NLB. He also saw that their online store was already live.
'This is a goddamn powerhouse,' he thought. 'I'm screwed.'
