Why is This Troublemaker So Damn Rich?

Chapter 177 - 171: Scouting the Enemy (Part 3)

Han Chao wasn’t in a hurry to report the good news to Li Yang. He planned to wait a few days. Otherwise, if he gave him a surprise today, Li Yang would just be asking for a progress report in a few days. Now that the vice president was personally in charge, where was Han Chao supposed to get updates? The regional vice president of Xinyue Group certainly wouldn’t give him the time of day.

After leaving Dan Biao’s office, Xia Jie subconsciously glanced toward Yang Hui’s desk, but he wasn’t there. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. She used to only think of him occasionally, but after he’d teased her yesterday afternoon, he kept popping into her mind.

She gathered her things, preparing to head to the NLB Store at the Xinyue Square primary location to scout the competition. She was very familiar with that project, as she had been in charge of the Shi Meng project at that same location. That was also how she’d had the chance to go on store inspections with Yang Hui several times. She recalled their first meeting, when he’d brushed against her while pretending to fasten her seatbelt. At the time, she’d thought it was an accident. Now, she realized it wasn’t an accident at all; he had almost certainly done it deliberately.

Downstairs, she saw Yang Hui’s Mercedes E-Class in the parking lot. He hadn’t left the company yet. ’But why didn’t he ask me to go on a store inspection with him today? Are men really all like that? Do they stop cherishing you once they have you? But he hasn’t completely gotten me yet... though we were so close.’

On the subway, she kept wondering if Yang Hui was that kind of heartless person. When the train arrived at her stop, she shook her head. ’Why is he all I can think about?’

Xia Jie arrived at the NLB Store in the Xinyue Square primary location. She quickly noticed that besides the many customers inside, there were a lot of people outside who looked like they were from other brands. She had even seen a few of them during her usual store inspections.

It seemed NLB’s performance yesterday had attracted a lot of attention. It wasn’t just Futong Commerce that was interested in the store’s management and staff; other brands had also come to see what they could learn.

She inconspicuously moved into the crowd, listening to what they were all discussing.

She noticed a supervisor from Huasheng Commerce. Standing next to her was a man they called President Wang, whom Xia Jie didn’t recognize. She overheard the supervisor explaining the situation.

"President Wang, that Xiaotang inside used to be an employee at my store. She resigned last month."

President Wang was clearly unhappy. "How could you let such an outstanding employee go? From what I can see, her customer service and sales abilities are both excellent. She must have been your top seller."

The supervisor shook her head. "No, her performance fluctuated. It was in the upper-middle range. And she was very ’zen’ about her work; she didn’t try very hard."

President Wang—Wang Hua, the Vice President of Huasheng Commerce—looked incredulous. "Look at her performance right now. Does she look like someone who’s ’zen’? She goes wherever there’s work to be done, and if her hands are empty, she actively looks for something to do. You’re telling me an employee like that is ’zen’? Do you think I’m blind?"

The supervisor didn’t know how to explain. Xiaotang hadn’t been like this at her old store. Who knew she could change so completely in just a month? ’Did she go through some kind of boot camp?’

"What was her average income at the old store?" When an employee resigns, nine times out of ten it’s because of a mismatch between their salary and expectations.

"Her take-home pay was a little over 4,000."

Wang Hua was confused. "That income is decent. In the current economic climate, many sales associates can’t even make that much. Oh, did you not provide social insurance?"

The supervisor replied, "We didn’t, but she signed a waiver voluntarily forgoing it."

"Without social insurance, that income can’t be considered high. Find a chance to talk to her. See if she’s willing to come back. We can raise her base salary a bit, provide proper social insurance, and guarantee that her take-home pay, after insurance deductions, is still over 4,000."

"Sir, when she was leaving, I asked if she would ever come back. She said, ’A good horse doesn’t come back for the grass it left behind.’"

Wang Hua scoffed, dismissing the saying. "A horse won’t come back for the old grass because the grass wasn’t good enough. If the grass gets better, and she can’t find any other grass to eat right now, she will definitely choose to come back for the old grass."

The supervisor nodded, seemingly agreeing with him, but also feeling it was a long shot.

"Do you understand my point?"

The supervisor nodded again. "The grass!"

Wang Hua whipped his head around. "Are you cursing at me?"

Xia Jie couldn’t hold it in. She quickly turned her head to the side, afraid they would see her laughing.

The supervisor looked aggrieved. ’You mentioned "grass" five times in one sentence. Wasn’t that the main point?’

’It seems everyone thinks like Li Yang, that a sales associate’s salary should only be around 4,000. It’s as if giving them any more is a waste—a failure to fully exploit their labor value.’

Xia Jie disagreed. After observing from the outside for a while, she felt this store’s success wasn’t due to strict rules, as the others seemed to think.

From the beaming smiles on the sales associates’ faces, she could sense a genuine love for their work. Their efforts were almost entirely self-motivated.

She entered the store and walked around, putting herself in a customer’s shoes. The shopping environment was excellent; you could hardly find a speck of dust. Any small mess was cleaned up immediately. This was a world away from the Futong Commerce stores. Let alone their messy checkout counters, under which were piles of soda cans, milk tea cups, and disposable lunch boxes that created a terrible customer experience. Some of their corners were even covered in spiderwebs. Xia Jie picked out an outfit and went into the fitting room.
