Why is This Troublemaker So Damn Rich?

Chapter 198 - 178: I’m Not Your Dad (3)

"I’m taking you out to eat. What do you feel like?"

"Whatever. I’m about to be jobless, so what’s the point of being picky?"

Her gloomy expression only amused Yang Hui. While waiting at a red light, he reached out and tilted her chin up. Xia Jie stared at him, her wide, innocent eyes filled with confusion.

"Come on, give your lord a smile."

Xia Jie let out a forced "hehe," a smile that was all teeth and no joy. Yang Hui, on the other hand, burst into a hearty, carefree laugh.

"I’m this miserable and you’re still laughing," Xia Jie said, a little peeved, turning to look out the window. "Starting tomorrow, I’m officially a jobless bum."

Yang Hui took her to Xinyue Square. He was originally supposed to meet Huang Lingyu there at 4 PM, but he’d come early because of Xia Jie’s situation. He parked in the underground garage, took the elevator straight to the third floor, and led her to the Wang Pin Steakhouse—the same one where he’d first eaten with Liu Shasha.

He wasn’t particularly interested in steak; he just thought the place was relatively quiet. In most other restaurants, it was often too noisy to even hear yourself talk over a meal.

"Have you handed in your resignation letter?" Yang Hui asked after placing their order and handing the tablet back to the waiter.

Xia Jie grunted in affirmation. ’I wasn’t about to wait for HR to come looking for me, nor did I want the company’s pitiful severance package. If I was leaving, it would be because I quit, not because I was fired. Besides, I don’t believe I did anything wrong. With a boss as arrogant and stubborn as Li Yang, I couldn’t see any future for the company anyway.’

"In that case, this calls for a celebration. Come on, let’s toast. To your new life."

Xia Jie rolled her eyes at him but clinked her glass against his anyway. By now, she wasn’t sad anymore, just wondering what to do next. Her departure had been so abrupt; she hadn’t been prepared for it.

BUZZ~

Just then, Yang Hui’s phone vibrated with a message. It was from Dan Biao, apologizing for Xia Jie’s departure. He said he had spoken up for her but couldn’t change the outcome. He also mentioned that the NLB brand would now be handled directly by Zhang Li. Li Yang, it seemed, was readily accepting of the suggestion.

’Heh.’ Yang Hui just smiled and didn’t reply. ’Dan Biao probably sent the message because of the office rumors about me and Xia Jie. He can’t tell if they’re true or not, but Dan Biao is never one to pass up an opportunity to curry favor.’

"Come on, let’s celebrate again."

Xia Jie muttered, slightly annoyed, "What are we celebrating now?" Nevertheless, she dutifully raised her glass. It seemed she was developing a habit of being unable to refuse him.

"Dan Biao just messaged me. He said Zhang Li is now personally in charge of the NLB brand."

Ah—

’Xia Jie hadn’t seen that coming. Her mind immediately jumped to Li Yang’s betting agreement. Doesn’t this mean Zhang Li will have to promote it himself? She remembered how he’d readily agreed with Li Yang that morning, insisting the agreement was no problem. He’d dug his own grave. She knew perfectly well that it didn’t matter who went to the stores to push this policy—it would be useless. No one would accept a constantly increasing workload for a constantly decreasing salary.’

’Li Yang’s management style completely ignores human nature. And as for Dan Biao and Zhang Li, their habit of agreeing to anything the boss says... to put it nicely, you could call it ’strong execution.’ To put it bluntly, it was just irresponsible—sucking up to the higher-ups while stepping on those below.’

"I still don’t know what happened this morning."

Xia Jie snapped out of her thoughts and recounted the morning’s events in the office. When she got to the part about Li Yang’s so-called "betting agreement," Yang Hui was stunned too. ’What kind of galaxy-brain move is that?’

’As his rival in the Qingjiang Market, also dealing in NLB, is he looking down on me by being this stupid? I don’t even need to lift a finger; they’re already starting to self-destruct.’

In truth, it wasn’t that he didn’t need to do anything. It was precisely because his own store in Xinyue Square was performing so well that it had thrown Li Yang into a panic, forcing him to make such a blunder.

They were both bosses, but their ways of thinking were completely different.

Yang Hui’s philosophy was to first give his employees a lot, and only then make high demands of them. But those demands always had to be feasible and practical.

Li Yang, on the other hand, started with high demands—standards so impossibly high they bordered on despair. He wanted to use this method to push his employees to their absolute limits. If there were results, he would dole out some rewards as he saw fit. He even seemed to think of these rewards as a gracious gift, for which his underlings should be eternally grateful.

From Xia Jie’s story, he could also hear her contempt for Dan Biao and Zhang Li’s inaction, for how they had essentially sold out their own team. That was probably why she had lost all hope in the company. When he heard that Li Yang had told her to "get lost," Yang Hui’s face instantly darkened.

"Li Yang is courting death—" His voice was so cold it felt like the very air around them was about to freeze into crystals. Xia Jie never imagined that the normally cheerful and slightly lecherous Manager Yang would get so furious on her behalf—furious enough to commit the "treason" of cursing out his own boss. A wave of warmth washed over her heart.

’So he really does care about me... If he’d been there this morning, he never would have ignored me like Dan Biao and Zhang Li did.’

"Manager Yang, please don’t be angry on my account. I’ve already resigned. It’s all in the past now."

"’The past?’ This isn’t over—" Yang Hui said coldly.

"Xia Jie, do you want to prove yourself and show that whole gang of idiots just how stupid they are?"

’Of course I do! I dream about it! But how? Manager Yang must be talking nonsense again.’

"Here’s the plan. You start work tomorrow. We’ll use data to slap them in the face, drive them out of the Qingjiang Market until they can’t survive, and show them who the real idiots are. We’ll make them get the hell out of Qingjiang Market."

"Start work tomorrow? What work?"
