Afraid?
’A little, maybe. Afraid she’d cry.’
Cheng Jun had a strange quirk: she would cry at the height of passion. He had no idea what kind of weird habit that was.
Because of this, Yang Hui never dared to really let loose. Otherwise, she’d cry her eyes out until they were swollen.
"A Hui, you know that Airex has five loss-making stores in Xinyue Square, right?"
Of course he knew. On his first day of work, he had already gotten a firm grasp of the profit situation for all the stores.
Futong Commerce’s partnership with Xinyue Square was comprehensive. Basically, as long as Xinyue Square could offer a location, Futong Commerce would move in.
This was because in Qingjiang Province, Xinyue Square was the undisputed number one in commercial real estate. Of its 21 plazas, over 80% were premium projects. Only a few new projects were still in their incubation period, with customer traffic still growing slowly.
Futong Commerce’s loss-making stores were all located in these fledgling projects. Of course, this was also due to the declining brand power of Airex. Other brands in the same malls weren’t losing money, or at worst would have a slight loss in some months, which wasn’t a major issue. As the malls’ customer traffic grew, they would quickly turn a profit.
But with Airex’s brand power in continuous decline, Futong Commerce saw no hope. Furthermore, these few loss-making stores were all a bit too large, leading to excessively high rental costs that caused the losses.
Therefore, Futong Commerce considered closing the stores and shutting down these unprofitable Airex locations.
Unfortunately, Xinyue Square was very aggressive and simply retorted, "In that case, why don’t you pull all of your Airex stores!"
That was obviously impossible. If they stopped cooperating with Xinyue Square altogether, the brand would have no future.
So, Futong Commerce tried negotiating with the individual mall locations, but the stores used the same tactic. "In that case, why don’t you pull all of Futong Commerce’s brands from this mall!"
Futong Commerce’s hands were tied. They negotiated for a long time without any results.
Now, Li Yang had put pressure on Dan Biao, demanding that he and Yang Hui resolve this issue. This was the real reason he had brought Yang Hui here today.
At the same time, he was making it clear to Yang Hui that this would be the focus of his work going forward, and it was a task that absolutely had to be completed.
"President Shan, I’m afraid negotiating store closures with the regional operations head won’t be effective. At Xinyue Group, operations and leasing are two separate departments. A precondition for closing a store is that the mall has to find a new tenant. This requires coordination between the two departments. It’s best to talk to their regional vice president; that’s the only way we’ll have a chance!"
Dan Biao gave a bitter smile. "The regional vice president of Xinyue Group? Is that someone we can even get a meeting with? Maybe if the boss himself came, but when he does, he only talks about cooperation and future plans with their leadership. It’s all about painting a grand vision. How could he possibly discuss store closures? Wouldn’t that just create bad blood?"
Yang Hui sneered. This was to be expected. Bosses always played the good cop. The underlings could raise as much hell as they wanted, and the boss would come in to smooth things over afterward.
’But if Dan Biao knows we need to talk to the VP about this, why did he bring me here to meet an operations manager?’
’Can’t get a meeting with the VP, so you settle for the operations manager?’
’What kind of logic is that? If I didn’t know better, you’d be leading me completely astray.’
Dan Biao checked the time, then pulled the door open to peek outside. Cheng Jun still hadn’t appeared.
He came back, sat down, and said, "A Hui, there’s one more thing I need to warn you about. I’ve noticed you always leave right on time. President Li doesn’t like that at all. He prefers employees to volunteer for a bit of overtime."
"So, from now on, even if you just sit around in the office for a while, don’t leave so early."
’What a twisted habit,’ Yang Hui thought. ’What’s the point of staying after hours when there’s no work to do? Just to kiss up to him and put on a show?’
’No wonder the office is still full of people when it’s time to go home every day. I was wondering about that.’
He picked up his phone and typed a message into his team’s group chat: "From now on, no more overtime at the company. Work gets done during work hours. Using non-work time just means your work efficiency is poor. Everyone must leave when the day is over. Otherwise, I’ll be having a private chat with you."
’President Li likes overtime. And I like doing things he doesn’t like.’
Dan Biao could never have imagined that the man in front of him was wired so differently from everyone else. He wouldn’t do a single thing President Li liked, and he’d do plenty of things President Li didn’t.
He had even already decided on his two main extracurricular activities at the company: 1. Provoking the unprovokable. 2. Hitting on women.
What others would see as a death wish, Yang Hui considered a tireless pursuit.
"President Shan, I’m here to work, not to suck up to my superiors. During work hours, I belong to the company. After hours, I belong to myself."
He stated his position clearly, so his future actions wouldn’t seem so abrupt.
Dan Biao gave him a long, hard look. ’This bastard really is a troublemaker!’
The memory of how he had reamed out Cai Miao in the morning meeting until she cried was still fresh in his mind. ’Forget it,’ he thought. ’Let him be. With a personality like that, who knows how long he’ll last anyway.’
"President Shan, I’m so sorry to keep you waiting."
Her voice arrived before she did.
Both men turned to look at Cheng Jun as she pushed the door open and entered.
Her full curves were perfectly accentuated by a sharply tailored business suit—a narrow waist cinched by a crisp pencil skirt, and a full bust line creating an elegant curve in her silk blouse. She carried herself with the distinctive, confident ease of a professional woman.
’Still as ’hard to handle’ as ever,’ Yang Hui mused, silently sizing her up. It had been a while since he’d had a chance to ’handle’ her.
Evidently, Cheng Jun hadn’t expected Yang Hui to be there. Her eyes lit up, and a smile spread across her face, tinged with a certain coquettish charm.
Dan Biao stood up and said, "Let me make an introduction. This is Manager Yang Hui, who recently joined our company to take charge of the Airex brand. A Hui, this is Manager Cheng Jun from Xinyue Group’s regional division. She’s in charge of operations for all 21 plazas."
Cheng Jun giggled. "President Shan, President Yang and I are old acquaintances. There’s no need for introductions."
’Old acquaintances? Just how acquainted were they?’
Dan Biao had assumed that someone from a company like Ruijing Commerce—a mere head of an operations department—wouldn’t have been able to connect with someone of Cheng Jun’s standing. He never imagined they already knew each other. Recalling his earlier comment that only a platform like Futong Commerce could provide the opportunity to meet people like her, he suddenly felt a little embarrassed.
She sat down next to Yang Hui, and a faint, elegant wisp of perfume drifted over—not the cloyingly sweet scent of a young girl, but an elegant, woody fragrance, like cedar mixed with a crisp hint of citrus.
The base notes, however, held a subtle warmth of rose, much like the woman herself—her competence hiding an effortless charm.
Yang Hui took a sniff. Dior’s J’adore line.
He was familiar with the scent; he had smelled it on her many times. It was always the same one.
She spread her documents out on the table. Her fingertips, coated in nude nail polish, slid quickly across the pages, the Cartier watch on her wrist reflecting a cool light.
"President Shan, I’ve taken a look at Futong Commerce’s performance, and there’s been a very noticeable decline recently. I also had our stores collect some information on your company’s shortcomings in store management. I’ve compiled it and will send it to you via WeChat in a bit."
Before Dan Biao could even bring up their topic, she had already seized the initiative.
