Dan Biao was at a loss for words.
What Yang Hui said seemed reasonable at first, but that logic only applied to rank-and-file employees.
’Isn’t it inappropriate for someone in management to say that?’
In his mind, when the boss called, you had to attend the meeting. It didn’t matter if it was overtime; even if you were already fast asleep in bed, you had to get up and go.
"A Hui, you’re new here and haven’t adapted to the company’s pace of work yet. I can tell you in all seriousness, if you keep this attitude, you won’t last long."
Yang Hui smiled. ’That’s exactly the effect I was going for.’
"President Shan, I have my principles and boundaries. Please understand."
Li Yang returned to the meeting room and sat at the head of the table.
During a discussion with the "NLB" brand representatives, he learned that another distributor had secured the prime first-floor spot in their Xinyue Square store. This news cast a shadow over his immense confidence in his channel expansion abilities and his belief that landing a great brand like "NLB" would let him quickly dominate the market.
A bad mood made him prone to taking it out on others.
"Damn it, why is everyone dragging their feet for a meeting? Did I say 5:40 PM so they could show up right on the dot?
Xiaocai, call Xiaodan. Find out who else isn’t here and tell them to get their asses over here now! Bunch of useless idiots."
The few operations supervisors who had already arrived immediately lowered their heads. The boss was blowing up, and no one wanted to be in the line of fire.
Cai Miao quickly called Dan Biao. He had just ended his call with Yang Hui and was grabbing a notebook and pen to head to the meeting.
’Yang Hui is completely unpersuadable, dead set on not coming. And from the sound of it, this isn’t just about today. He probably won’t attend any meetings after work hours in the future.’
’What a shame. The guy is capable, but President Li won’t tolerate a troublemaker like that. He definitely won’t last long.’
Seeing Dan Biao enter, Li Yang snarled, "Dragging your feet all day long! You got no energy or what?"
Dan Biao, already on edge because of Yang Hui, was instantly cowed by Li Yang’s shouting. He scurried to his seat and lowered his head.
"Who else isn’t here?"
Before Dan Biao could speak, Cai Miao jumped in. "The new guy, Yang Hui, isn’t here yet!"
Naturally, she wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to go after Yang Hui.
Li Yang slammed his pen on the table. "It’s 5:41! Does he have no concept of time? Being late to a meeting is worse than being late for work! Notify HR to issue him a formal warning!"
Dan Biao opened his mouth, but his mind was in turmoil. ’What was he supposed to say?’
’President Li says being late to a meeting is worse than being late for work, but Yang Hui probably won’t accept that. As far as he’s concerned, it’s after hours. If we give him a formal warning, isn’t there a risk he’ll just fire back with another company-wide email?’
’Besides, President Li only thinks Yang Hui is late. What’ll happen when he finds out he’s not coming at all?’
But he had to say it. "P-President Li!"
"If you have something to say, spit it out! But Yang Hui’s punishment is mandatory. He dares to be late for my meeting? That’s completely outrageous! He must be punished as an example to the others!"
Cai Miao happily began composing a message to Wang Xiao in HR, telling her to send out an email announcing Yang Hui’s punishment.
"After the meeting, you set him straight! How are you leading your men? Don’t you understand that an order is an order? That my commands are to be followed without question?
Don’t let him get a big head over a few small successes. We reward achievements, yes, but we punish mistakes. And when a mistake warrants severe punishment, it must be delivered!"
Li Yang seemed to be talking about Yang Hui, but he was actually reminding everyone in the room. He was using Yang Hui’s punishment to make an example out of him.
He kept ranting, so Dan Biao didn’t dare interrupt. The words he’d been about to say were forced back down his throat.
"Why isn’t he here yet?"
After his tirade, Li Yang realized Yang Hui still hadn’t shown up. His blood pressure nearly shot through the roof.
Only then did Dan Biao have a chance to speak, saying cautiously, "Boss, Yang Hui said... he’s not coming to the meeting."
Li Yang was stunned for three seconds. Then, in a voice laced with disbelief, he asked, "What did you just say? He said he’s not attending *my* meeting?"
’The new guy is toast,’ everyone thought, silent as the grave. ’He’s got some serious balls. Daring to skip the first meeting the boss himself is leading.’
With his head lowered, Dan Biao simply grunted.
Li Yang suddenly fell silent, but Dan Biao knew it was merely the calm before the storm. He knew Li Yang all too well.
"Why isn’t he attending?"
Dan Biao hesitated, unsure if he should repeat Yang Hui’s exact words.
"I’m asking you a question! Are you deaf?"
Steeling himself, he answered, "Boss, he said it’s after working hours and he has personal matters to attend to."
Li Yang laughed, a sound born of pure rage. "A supervisor... with no perspective? No team spirit? No sense of dedication? What an absolute bastard!"
SLAM! He smashed his hand down on the conference table.
"What personal matter could possibly be so important that he’d skip my meeting?"
Dan Biao looked like he was about to cry. He really didn’t dare to say it. It wasn’t that he was afraid of being yelled at; he was afraid Li Yang would get so angry he’d have a stroke or something.
"I asked you a question! Why the fuck are you playing deaf and dumb today? Do you want me to fire your ass?"
Since Yang Hui wasn’t there, he was taking all his anger out on Dan Biao.
Dan Biao could only answer, "He said... he has to go home for dinner. If he’s late, his food will get cold."
The room fell deathly silent. Every eye was suddenly fixed on Li Yang.
"Bastard!"
He shot to his feet, slamming his hands on the table. The solid wood conference table shuddered with a low HUM.
His aged face was now a shade of crimson-purple. Veins bulged on his temples like writhing earthworms, and his temples throbbed so violently it looked as if they might burst at any second.
His bloodshot eyes looked ready to bulge from their sockets. His gaze swept across the room like a poisoned dagger, and wherever it landed, people held their breath and lowered their heads. Even the air itself seemed to freeze.
"Fire him! Tell him not to come back! Fire him!"
His roar exploded in a spray of spittle. The tie around his neck was twisted awry by the violent heaving of his chest. He snatched a stack of documents and hurled it against the wall. As the papers scattered like snowflakes, the veins on the back of his hand stood out, blue and taut, his knuckles turning a deathly white from the force of his clenched fist.
A wave of dizziness from his skyrocketing blood pressure forced him to grip the edge of the table for support, but he still managed to hiss through clenched teeth, "In the entire history of Futong Commerce, this is the first incident of such malicious insubordination! This kind of dissent must be crushed! Crushed! CRUSHED!"
The chandelier overhead cast deep shadows across his head, carving his face, twisted in fury, into a hellish landscape of light and shadow.
The room was once again deathly silent. Everyone held their breath, the only sound the harsh, ragged panting of Li Yang after his outburst.
Cai Miao kept her head down, but the joy in her eyes was palpable. ’Yang Hui,’ she thought, ’you really dug your own grave this time!’
Li Yang caught his breath for a moment, then stood up and announced, "Meeting’s canceled. Xiaodan, come to my office."
Still seething, he strode out of the conference room.
Dan Biao, who knew him well, understood that Li Yang was absolutely furious. The meeting truly couldn’t go on.
