Chapter 343: Chapter 247: A Sudden Message
Leaving Dean Wu, Han Ning walked out of the newly constructed dormitory building. He headed to the one nearby, the original Dormitory E built of reinforced concrete. He made his way downstairs and pushed open a heavy iron door, and an icy chill rushed out to greet him.
It was utterly silent here. The thermometer on the wall showed the temperature was already approaching -8°C.
On beds cast from metal lay rows of figures, their eyes shut tight.
This was a low-temperature basement the academy had specially built for members who had fallen into a coma from severe and unusual injuries.
An Ice Type Soul Beast constantly maintained the room’s ultra-low temperature to prevent their bodies from decaying.
Han Ning had come this time to use the Taiyin Soul-Vibrating Technique, which he had acquired not long ago, to determine the exact cause of their comas.
His expression was calm. As his gaze swept past the familiar faces, he walked straight to the farthest bed in the room, where Lü Xiuning lay.
More than half a month had passed since Fei Lie’s attack had left Lü Xiuning comatose.
The man who was once the stern-faced commander of the academy’s combat teams now lay silently on the bed, his face ashen.
If not for the occasional beat of his heart, anyone would have thought him long dead.
It had to be said that Lü Xiuning was a gifted commander, more so than a fighter. In his absence, the development of the academy’s combat teams had slowed, leaving them rudderless. His replacement, Teacher Zhou, was a few years younger and relatively inexperienced.
A flurry of thoughts flashed through his mind.
Han Ning reached out and touched Lü Xiuning’s cold forehead. He released his Spiritual Power, which transformed into a chilling stream that flowed from his fingertip into the other man’s mind.
A faint breeze materialized around them.
This was Han Ning using the Soul-Seeking Technique from the Taiyin Soul-Vibrating Technique. He was using his Spiritual Power in conjunction with Lü Xiuning’s body to search for his lost Residual Soul.
"Whew... All right..."
A short while later, Han Ning opened his eyes, having grasped the situation.
His probe revealed that a trace of Lü Xiuning’s Residual Soul remained in his mind. The rest of his Soul Spirits were likely scattered around the area where he had fought Fei Lie.
As a Beast Master, Teacher Lü’s Residual Soul had a certain degree of strength. Since not much time had passed, it probably hadn’t completely dissipated yet.
Upon realizing this, Han Ning quickly lifted Lü Xiuning’s body and headed for the battlefield.
The battle site had since been converted into a training ground for the academy’s members and their Soul Beasts. Several watchtowers had also been erected around the perimeter.
When Han Ning arrived carrying Lü Xiuning over his shoulder, the teachers and students busy with Soul Beast battles and training exercises all stared in surprise at the man he carried.
"Han... Han Ning? What are you doing with Teacher Lü?"
"Oh? Don’t tell me you’ve found a way?"
"Everyone, quiet down! Don’t disturb Han Ning!"
As the students began to chatter among themselves, a more respected teacher immediately motioned for the crowd to be silent.
The crowd fell silent, their eyes fixed on Han Ning.
"This should be the place."
Without explaining himself to the others, Han Ning relied on his memory to find the center of the former battlefield and looked around.
"Yin Soul Gathering Chapter..."
"When the soul is sundered, wisdom is lost. Visualize the form of the Spirit Body, gather the soul, reforge the consciousness, and increase wisdom..."
Han Ning muttered the words from the Soul-Vibrating Technique. Unconsciously, an image of Lü Xiuning’s face formed in his mind.
He kept visualizing Lü Xiuning’s appearance, not thinking, but mechanically constructing an image of his body with his consciousness.
The process was arduous and long.
An unknown amount of time passed.
Deep within Lü Xiuning’s mind, where his spirit had ceased to function...
A wisp of Spiritual Energy, radiating a faint, cold aura, materialized in the depths of his consciousness.
As this wisp of Spiritual Energy rippled outward...
...fragments of memory, both familiar and strange, began to return to his awareness.
’My name is Lü Xiuning... I’m thirty-nine years old...’
’All these gray specks of light around me... they’re the fragments of my shattered Residual Soul. I need to gather them.’
In a daze, a few flickers of awareness awakened within Lü Xiuning’s mind, prompting his spirit to stir and begin to function.
Han Ning, for his part, could vaguely sense that Lü Xiuning was using the wisp of Residual Soul he’d just awakened to manifest a virtual version of himself. This apparition was constantly emitting waves of suction, pulling the scattered fragments of his Residual Soul back into its form.
The gray specks of light gathered in increasing numbers. From a third-person perspective, it looked as if a larger gray point of light was attracting countless smaller ones.
In the physical world, however, the scene was utterly bizarre.
Han Ning and Lü Xiuning both had their eyes shut tight. Han Ning had a finger from his right hand pressed to his own forehead. From time to time, a cold breeze would stir out of nowhere, scattering the gravel and fallen leaves on the ground.
"Is... Is he actually performing a soul-summoning for Teacher Lü?" a student who’d loved ghost movies before he transmigrated muttered, his eyes wide.
"Hush!" The teacher beside him shot the student a glare and put a finger to his lips.
"Hooo..."
Han Ning opened his eyes. He looked at Lü Xiuning, whose eyes were still shut tight, and nodded in satisfaction.
’I didn’t expect my first time using this soul-gathering method to be so effective.’
’Of course, it’s all thanks to Teacher Lü being in a coma for a relatively short time, and the fact that there weren’t any special forces interfering at the battle site.’
’The lingering Gray Mist doesn’t harm a Residual Soul; in fact, it nourishes it. That’s one of the unique features the Alataku People designed into it.’
