Wilderness: I Tame Beasts to Survive
Chapter 362 - 256: Homeland Migration (2)Chapter 362: Chapter 256: Homeland Migration (2)
"Soon. Less than an hour now, I think. The main issue is that we don’t have enough Soul Beasts for transport."
Standing to Teacher Zhou’s left, Xu Jingjing let out a long sigh, her voice tinged with exhaustion.
"You’ve worked hard, Jingjing. You haven’t slept for almost thirty hours, have you? Go get some rest. I’ll wake you when the last batch of supplies is ready to depart."
Seeing the bloodshot eyes of the young woman beside him, Teacher Zhou couldn’t help but gently pat her on the shoulder.
"A young lady like you shouldn’t work herself to death."
Even for Beast Masters, going without sleep for dozens of hours while working nonstop was hard to endure.
"Alright, I’ll go now. Teacher Zhou, I’ll leave the rest to you."
Xu Jingjing truly couldn’t hold on any longer. After saying goodbye to Teacher Zhou, she went downstairs, yawning.
After seeing Xu Jingjing off, Teacher Zhou gazed at the few Flying Flame Mosquitoes slowly flying in the distance. He picked up the landline mounted on the nearby wall and dialed a few numbers. A moment later, Han Ning’s voice came from the other end. "Hello?"
"Han Ning, the young Soul Beasts will be fully loaded in less than an hour. See if you can arrange for some Insect Masters from the Red Centipede Tribe to act as an escort. We’re a bit short-staffed over here."
"Understood, Teacher Zhou." At that moment, Han Ning was in a room on the other side of the dormitory, directing the Soul Beasts below as they wove hanging baskets. He nodded upon receiving Teacher Zhou’s call.
With that, Han Ning waved to someone behind him, calling out to a group of Soul Beasts watching cartoons in the break room. "Egg Pancake, take me for a spin in the sky."
"Chirp chirp~"
Sitting on the floor, Egg Pancake obediently stood up, trotted over to the balcony, and crouched down.
Han Ning climbed onto Egg Pancake’s back, and they flew off toward the distant sky.
The weather wasn’t great today. A light, drizzling rain fell on his head as he looked down, observing the numerous humans and Soul Beasts moving below.
WHOOSH—
A sudden gust of wind slammed into him, making Han Ning’s body sway.
’The wind’s picking up?’
He pulled his clothes tighter and didn’t think much of it, continuing to observe the scene below.
Due to the varying Power levels of the Flying Flame Mosquitoes, the amount of supplies each one could carry differed. An Extraordinary Level Flying Flame Mosquito, for example, could carry at least ten tons of supplies, while an ordinary Awakened Level one could carry one or two tons at most.
There were fewer of the stronger, giant Flying Flame Mosquitoes. Crimson Flame was still dispatching more Insect Masters and swarms, so he didn’t even need Teacher Zhou’s reminder.
After flying another ten-or-so kilometers, Han Ning came across the first swarm that had departed.
Below, amidst the clouds, Flying Flame Mosquitoes of all sizes flew in an orderly fashion along their designated route, maintaining a safe distance from one another.
In the air above the Flying Flame Mosquito squadron, a number of Tree Demons and Combat Insects patrolled. Some of the flying insects carried human Beast Masters, each holding binoculars and intently observing the surrounding Flying Flame Mosquitoes for any issues.
They were the escorts appointed by Dean Wu, responsible for ensuring the swarm’s flight safety. If any unexpected incidents occurred, they were to handle them immediately and report back to headquarters.
In the distance, the vast mountain range of the Insect Continent was hidden in the misty rain, like a colossal, prostrating Giant Beast, unmoving and majestic.
The swarm’s destination wasn’t the entrance to the Jade Forest that Han Ning had used last time, but the nearest entry point, located 1,500 kilometers northwest of the academy.
This was the first leg of the supply transfer journey.
Compared to traveling by land, the sky route was safer. It also passed by the territories of several Insect Master Families, which was one of the reasons for using the Flying Flame Mosquitoes.
The scale of these Insect Master Families was no match for the Red Centipede Tribe. Any Insect Master who happened to see a swarm bearing the Red Centipede Tribe’s characteristics pass by would not launch an attack.
A fully loaded Awakened Level Flying Flame Mosquito could fly at about 120 kilometers per hour. The heavy cargo severely impacted their speed, meaning it would take at least half a day to reach the destination. During this time, it was imperative to ensure the swarm’s safety—a matter the human side had to take very seriously.
Due to the weather, visibility was extremely low. After circling the Sky Domain above the swarm’s flight path on Egg Pancake and confirming there were no issues, Han Ning prepared to head back.
Each wave of the convoy was separated by only tens to hundreds of kilometers. If a situation arose at the front, the Beast Masters in charge of reconnaissance would use their Communication Devices to relay the message to the next wave, which would then pass it down the line like a series of signal fires, eventually reaching headquarters.
"Chirp chirp~"
Egg Pancake broke through the wind and rain, flying back to the balcony of the newly built watchtower. It shook the rainwater from its body. Han Ning patted its head, signaling that the little guy could go rest.
It let out a happy cry and eagerly burrowed into the group of its companions.
Inside the watchtower, the large computer screen originally used for surveillance was now playing an episode of *Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid*—a show Egg Pancake had found somewhere. Including Nia’s Yimu Flood Dragon, which flew over for visits from time to time, a total of seven or eight Soul Beasts were sitting in a row, watching the cartoon with rapt attention.
Han Ning paid them no mind, busy continuing to communicate with various parties and allocate resources.
About an hour later, the landline on the wall rang. He answered it, and a serious voice came from the other end:
"Captain, there’s a new development."
"What is it?" Han Ning was surprised to hear the voice of one of his classmates on the other end and couldn’t help but ask.
"According to the latest report from the forward units, a powerful storm has suddenly formed to the northeast, and the wind speeds on its periphery are rapidly increasing."
"A storm? How could a storm form so suddenly?" Han Ning frowned.
Hearing the confusion in his tone, the classmate took the initiative to explain:
"One of the members who passed on the message used to work in meteorology. They said this storm’s formation was very sudden. It’s projected to reach a strength of around Level 13. A Level 13 gale at sea would be enough to capsize almost anything short of a giant cargo freighter with the waves it kicks up."
"And since our flight convoy is in the sky, they will face the storm directly. The danger is no less than it would be at sea."
"Formed suddenly... Does Dean Wu have any orders?"
"He has ordered us to temporarily halt the Soul Beast transfer operation. The swarms that have already departed are to immediately stop heading toward the storm’s formation area and alter their course," the communicator relayed Dean Wu’s orders.
"That’s all manageable, but the most urgent problem right now is that the first flight team heading for the Jade Forest entrance has already flown into the area covered by the storm..."
Han Ning took a deep breath and looked out at the gloomy sky in the distance. "I understand. I’m heading over there immediately."
"Han Ning, something’s happened!"
The words had barely left his mouth when the door was pushed open from the outside. His roommate, Chen Linyu, walked in, his eyes completely bloodshot.
Seeing Chen Linyu’s bloodshot eyes and grim expression, Han Ning was worried that his roommate might pass out from shock if he got any more agitated.
"Lin Yu, don’t panic. Take a deep breath, calm down, and tell me slowly." He took a step forward, channeling a tranquilizing aura from his Spiritual Power through his palm and into his roommate’s mind, helping to ease his tension.
Soothed by Han Ning, Chen Linyu slowly calmed down and said haltingly:
"Just now... just now, I got a distress call from a classmate in the first flight team. He said they’d encountered a powerful storm, unlike anything they’d ever seen... Just as I was about to ask for details, the call suddenly dropped. After that, I received messages from other teachers confirming they’d run into the storm."
"Han Ning, I’m asking you... no, I’m begging you, please go save them!" Chen Linyu gritted his teeth, his gaze fixed on Han Ning, his eyes pleading.
Han Ning felt a little uncomfortable under his intense gaze. He was inwardly surprised at how agitated Chen Linyu was. ’Even if the transport team ran into a storm, there are Beast Master escorts to protect the personnel and supplies. And in a downpour, the Soul Beasts can use Energy Shield abilities to offset the worst of it. It’s not completely without risk, but it shouldn’t be a life-or-death situation.’ Still, Han Ning didn’t ask why, simply nodding grimly.
"I’ll head to the front lines to see for myself."
