Chapter 385: Chapter 268: Leave None Behind
The poor woman in Cang Lin’s clutches was already on the verge of death, without even the strength left to struggle.
"How boring..."
A moment later, Cang Lin tossed aside the stiff, cold corpse, his gaze continuing to drift over the area before him.
Just then, the Insect Master who had left a short while ago suddenly hurried back to his side and spoke urgently:
"Brother Cang Lin, an Insect Servant from our clan just reported in. We’ve been ordered to immediately stop capturing these members of the Alien Race, help them disperse the white mist, and protect their lives."
"Whose order?" Cang Lin frowned, his tone skeptical.
"It’s from Cang Yu..."
"Cang Yu? A guy who isn’t even an elder dares to order us around?" Hearing this, Cang Lin’s frown deepened.
"So, should we carry out the order, or...?" his companion asked cautiously.
"Ignore him. It’s just some of the elders backing him trying to get a share of our glory. Let the people at the top deal with their own affairs."
"Wait! We need to keep up appearances. Don’t be harsh in your reply. Just say we’ll withdraw immediately, and tell Cang Yu not to worry."
A glint flashed in Cang Lin’s eyes as he waved a hand, signaling his companion to carry on with the mission.
’Cang Yu actually knows these people are afraid of the white mist. This Alien Race has never appeared on the Insect Continent before. How could he possibly know that?’
After his companion left, Cang Lin stared down at the frail humans, who were tied up together by the Insect Servants like a brood of chicks. He muttered to himself,
"It seems... he has a big secret."
Suddenly, a faint sound reached his mind.
"Who’s there?!"
Torn from his thoughts, Cang Lin whipped his head around. The Soul Beast beneath him turned in sync, two beams of ghastly green light shooting from its eyes like pillars toward a spot behind them.
The green light arrived in an instant, illuminating a group of furtive, fiery red figures who were rapidly retreating.
’It’s this group of vermin again.’
He remembered that when he had first discovered this group from the Alien Race, those fiery red vermin had been lurking nearby.
He had originally assumed they were just Insect Servants living in the vicinity.
He hadn’t expected them to still dare to spy on him here after being warned off.
Cang Lin merely gave a light wave of his hand.
Dozens of massive Flying Armors charged out from the surroundings, rushing toward the Insect Servants who were trying to flee.
Soon, the swarm of insects seized the helpless Insect Servants and threw them viciously to the ground.
Cang Lin descended, looking down on the filthy creatures before him as he asked coldly, "Where are you from?"
GULP.
Faced with the daunting might emanating from the Ancestral Insect Master, the few Insect Servants from the Red Centipede Tribe trembled uncontrollably. The short Insect Servant in the lead stammered, "My lord of the Holy Race, we are servants of the Red Centipede Tribe."
"Tell me, why are you lingering here?" Cang Lin raised his foot and stomped down hard on the short Insect Servant’s head, grinding it into the filthy mud.
Half of the Insect Servant’s face caved in. His hands flailed as he struggled to speak.
"You, speak!" Cang Lin looked toward another, taller Insect Servant.
"R-Reporting, my lord... w-we were just... passing by." The tall Insect Servant’s body shook, and a foul liquid even began to leak from his lower body.
SPLAT!
The next second, his head was blasted apart by a long, narrow proboscis that shot through the air.
Pale red brain matter splattered onto the others nearby, scaring them so badly they instantly lost control of their bowels.
"Last chance. Tell me your real purpose, and you can become Insect Servants for my Holy Race. If you don’t talk, you all die!"
As soon as the words fell, the short Insect-man who had been pinned under Cang Lin’s foot struggled to raise his right hand, his body trembling with effort.
"Oh? It seems you’re the leader. You can speak."
Cang Lin moved his right foot and settled back onto the beetle’s back.
"R-Reporting, my lord... We... received an order from our tribe’s High Priest... to come and... rescue those... strange-looking members of the Alien Race. But... we didn’t expect... that you lords of the Holy Race... would arrive first." The short Insect Servant spoke with a tremor, letting the blood from his mouth trickle down from the corner of his lips, his caved-in head bowed low.
’How did he know a group from the Alien Race had appeared here?’ Cang Lin’s expression grew curious.
’Even the Ancestor Family only discovered something was amiss here by chance while passing through.’
’Why would that group of lowly, non-ancestral Insect Masters want to save this Alien Race?’
"I... I don’t know either... b-but... I’ve seen members of an Alien Race... who look just like them in our tribe before..."
"Hm?"
At that moment, Cang Lin’s expression became a fascinating sight.
’There’s actually another Race on this continent that our Holy Race doesn’t know about?’
’This... This is practically heresy!’
In an instant, Cang Lin’s expression turned grim. He stared at the few Insect Servants who were trembling like leaves and said indifferently:
"I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourselves. Go back and tell your High Priest that we’ve left, and that he should come here."
He pointed at the injured Insect Servant. "You’re not going. The rest of you, go."
"...Yes." The remaining few, already scared out of their wits, nodded vigorously. Under the watch of several Cyan God Insect Servants, they departed in the direction from which they had come.
Watching them leave, Cang Lin sent out a message with his Spiritual Power: "Cang Huan, follow them secretly. If that damned High Priest isn’t willing to come, just tie him up and drag him here. Remember, don’t reveal your position. I’m worried these vermin might try to sneak away."
"Understood!"
Overhead, a streak of green light flashed and vanished.
...
「Red Centipede Tribe.」
The High Priest, Fei Lie, who had just returned to the tribe, was accompanying Dean Wu, Qing Fan, and the others from the Jade Forest. He was gathering the tribe’s many Insect Servants to head to the human’s arrival point for a rescue mission.
