Chapter 416: Chapter 283: Ready (Part 2)
When Han Ning saw Grey’s gaze land on him, he immediately ran over. Standing before the mountain-sized Soul Beast, he asked with a smile.
"Huuuu~"
At his words, Grey’s eyes crinkled in happiness. A single joyous cry was all it took for its breath to form a powerful gale, causing Egg Pancake, who was shielding Han Ning, to waver as sparks flew from its body.
"Alright, alright, I know you’re happy, but... we’re about to start building our home on you. Just like before, you need to stay very still. I’ll have Mengting and Sister Lan Qian come play with you, how about that?"
Even after breaking through to become a powerful being on par with a Monarch, Grey still had the mind of a child and needed to be coaxed.
"Huuuu~"
The mention of Sister Mengting made Grey even happier. It gently slapped its pectoral fins—each one larger than a soccer field—against the specially compacted ground, leaving a series of shallow pits.
"Okay, Mengting," Han Ning said, beckoning Liu Mengting over. "For a while, your job is to keep Grey calm and still. We’re going to start major construction on its body. It might be a little painful, which could trigger an instinctual resistance from it. You’ll need to help distract it."
"You can count on me! Lan Qian and I guarantee we’ll get the job done!"
"MROWR!"
Liu Mengting thumped her ample chest. Lan Qian copied her, and so did her great cat, a Nether Breathed Leopard that had evolved into a C-Grade Soul Beast, patting its own furry chest.
"Alright... Let’s get started, everyone!"
In addition to inscribing Spiritual Arrays of various Levels all over Grey’s Body, the team also needed to construct habitats on its back and within its Body—enough space for at least ten thousand people and tens of thousands of Soul Beasts.
While the current plan only involved a few thousand people boarding the "whale," everything had to be designed for maximum capacity in case more members joined in the future.
Despite how spacious Grey’s back seemed, it would still be a tight fit to accommodate tens of thousands of lives.
Among the humans transported to the Insect Continent, there were quite a few who had worked in the construction industry. After they learned some basics about Soul Beasts, an architectural design team of about twenty people drafted a blueprint for the construction on Grey’s back.
With the row of bone spurs running down the middle of Grey’s back—some dozens of meters tall—as a central divider and the curved edges of its body as the outer boundaries, the total usable area on its back was just under two square kilometers.
On Blue Star, in a densely populated major metropolis where every inch of land is precious, two square kilometers could house hundreds of thousands of people.
However, considering the need for numerous defensive structures, Grey’s back would naturally not be home to nearly that many lives.
So, the design team divided the entire area of its back into three sections: a living zone, a work zone, and a combat buffer zone.
The height of all buildings was strictly limited to no more than thirty meters.
This was not only because taller buildings would increase the Spiritual Energy consumption of the Defense Array, but also because the ground beneath them was Grey’s living flesh, meaning the foundations couldn’t be sunk too deep.
To make construction possible, the Spiritual Array team had already inscribed preliminary Arrays on Grey’s flesh. These were designed to pierce into its tissue, numb any pain, and prevent infection.
Once the buildings were complete, the All-Encompassing Spiritual Silkworms would be brought in to stitch the structures directly to Grey’s body. This way, Grey wouldn’t feel any pain, and its health wouldn’t be affected.
At Han Ning’s command, everyone recalled their Soul Beasts and immediately sprang into action.
Unlike on Blue Star, where buildings were made of reinforced concrete, in the world of Beast Taming, the raw materials for construction could be provided by Soul Beasts.
Earth Type Soul Beasts could condense the Earth Element into viscous mud or solid rock.
If a Soul Beast hadn’t mastered the Gathering Spirit technique, these condensed materials would quickly dissipate back into Elemental Particles. To create a permanent, solid object, the condensed element must be solidified by bonding with a natural product of the same element.
When Egg Pancake and Da Yan had built defenses in the past, they had actually used natural chunks of earth, combining them with their own Spiritual Energy to solidify them into stone structures.
The selection of building materials was also handled by a specialized construction team. Every member came from a construction background, and they had even specifically contracted Earth, Water, and Wood type Soul Beasts.
This turn of events was something they never could have imagined when they first arrived in this world—even after crossing over to an Otherworld, the poor civil engineering guys were still stuck doing miserable civil engineering work.
In an instant, swarms of short-lived transport insects, each laden with various materials, began flying back and forth between the ground and Grey’s back.
About twenty Earth and Wind Type Soul Beasts were stationed on either side of Grey’s body. Anyone who wanted to get onto its back just had to give them a shout. The Soul Beasts would then manipulate the Earth and Wind Elements to form an automatic stone staircase or a gentle breeze to lift them up.
Meanwhile, other Soul Beasts with immense Power and skill in hauling were already waiting on Grey’s back. Under human direction, they moved heavy materials to their designated areas, ready for construction.
Currently, Night Nether City had a total of 563 Beast Masters, all of whom were now dedicated to the construction effort.
Of these, about two hundred people were focused on building structures and facilities. They commanded over six hundred Soul Beasts, split into ten teams, and were starting with the most critical infrastructure first.
Another two hundred or so people, those with the highest proficiency in Spiritual Arrays, were in charge of calibrating and testing the arrays on Grey’s Body.
This was the most critical task. To prevent any accidents during their future voyage, the entire system had to be tested repeatedly to reduce the possibility of any oversight to an absolute minimum.
The final group of sixty-plus people were the strongest individuals in Night Nether City in terms of overall combat power. They were completely immersed in the final stages of inscribing the Spiritual Arrays.
No one knew how the Spiritual Energy intensity within Grey’s Body would change after it reached the Lord Limit. The required scale and strength for the entire system of Spiritual Arrays were unknown; even the most efficient plan provided by the interface panel was merely an estimate. Therefore, they had to wait until after the breakthrough to begin this final phase.
Now that Grey had made its breakthrough, Han Ning provided all the relevant data to Sage and Zhou Mingkai, leaving it to them to assess the situation and finalize the plan.
As for Han Ning... on the human side of things, the work of inscribing the Spiritual Energy Arrays had been completely handed over to Zhou Mingkai.
The massive infrastructure project also had its own designated supervisors.
For the first time in a while, he actually found himself with nothing to do.
"Sage, Teacher Zhou, is there anything I can do to help?" Han Ning asked. He rode Egg Pancake into Grey’s body, entering a space that resembled an abdominal cavity. Inside, Sage and Zhou Mingkai were busy pointing at the scarlet cavity walls.
Sage glanced at him and said flatly, "Go get some rest. You’ve been busy for the better part of six months. Leave the rest of the work to us. There’s no need to rush things now."
Zhou Mingkai smiled as well. "Go on. You’ve already done all the heavy lifting. Just leave the finishing touches to us."
"Alright then... I’ll go check on things elsewhere."
Seeing that the two of them didn’t need him, Han Ning gave them a few last words and returned to the outside.
Just then, the distant, burning Wall of Nether Fire began to tremble.
The massive form of the Jade Aurora Dragon God Jun slowly pushed its way through from the outside.
At the same time, it extended a claw and swiped downward.
The wall of fire split in two, and a gap dozens of meters wide and a hundred meters high appeared out of thin air.
Immediately after, a dense swarm of Soul Beasts, like a migrating ant colony, began pouring through the rift one after another.
’They’re finally here?’ Seeing the sight, Han Ning quickly had Egg Pancake fly toward them.
After three days, it seemed the preparations in the Jade Forest were finally complete. The main migration force had arrived at Night Nether City.
The dozens of kilometers passed in a flash.
As he drew closer, Han Ning noticed the leader wasn’t Qing Dou, but his ’good son,’ Qing Fan.
"Qing Fan? What are you doing here? Where’s the Qing Dou Leader?" Han Ning asked with a smile as he approached to greet him.
Qing Fan sat atop his Flying Dragon, directing the main force into Night Nether City.
Hearing Han Ning’s call, he turned his head and explained, "There are too many Soul Beasts, and they’re making too much of a commotion. My father and the other clan elders are covering the main group’s advance. We’re just the first wave; there’s another one coming."
"Oh, right. Dean Wu and the others are just outside. They should be coming in very soon."
