Chapter 450: Chapter 300: Paji Style (2)
Before they arrived, the group had anticipated needing Crystal Stones of all levels, so Han Ning had specifically brought some low-level ones in his waist pouch.
Otherwise, given his current collecting habits, he probably wouldn’t have brought any Soul Crystals below the War General Level.
"Perfect." Han Ning pulled out 300 Extraordinary Level Insect Crystals all at once, piling the massive heap on the counter.
Having plundered the collections of several Insect Master Families, if there was one thing he wasn’t short on, it was Insect Crystals.
In the end, Han Ning received 206 smooth, shimmering, aqua-blue Shell Pearls from the other party and returned to Grey’s back.
He informed Qing Fan, Dean Wu, and the others who hadn’t gone out about the city entry requirements, then produced the 206 entry permits and briefly explained the rules on Pagji Island.
Pagji Island had four cities in total: two in the west, one in the center, and one in the east. The permit granted access to all cities except the eastern one.
He left the distribution of the entry permits to Dean Wu and the others.
...
Filled with curiosity about Pagji Island, Han Ning used one of the entry permits. This time, he brought along Sage, Hom, his assistant Ah Yu, and his curious roommate Lin Tianhe, who had decided to tag along. They returned to the area near the registration point.
To the right of the port, the Merfolk Race had built Shuixiu City, which was only about a dozen kilometers away.
Throughout the Pagji Island area, registrants were permitted to summon Soul Beasts below Monarch Level for transportation.
Soul Beasts of Monarch Level or higher were forbidden from appearing anywhere.
「A few minutes later.」
Riding Egg Pancake, Han Ning arrived before a towering city wall.
The city’s structure was at least seventy percent similar to the ancient cities of Xia Country.
The walls, dozens of meters tall, stretched as far as the eye can see, encircling the massive city.
However, the walls didn’t appear to be built from brick and stone. Instead of the usual gray, they were a palette of blue and white.
Not far away, at the city gate, stood two Merfolk. They had a few faint blue scales on their cheeks.
After they showed their entry permits to the guards, the guards didn’t ask many questions and let the five of them through.
"It feels like we’ve walked into a fairy tale. Look at that! There are guys with fish heads, and things that look like mermaids walking right by us. None of this feels real..." Lin Tianhe exclaimed, his hands clasped behind his head. He was like a wide-eyed child, constantly staring at the passersby.
"Hey, kid, watch it," Sage said, glancing at Lin Tianhe and giving him a light rap on the forehead. "Some races don’t appreciate being stared at so openly. Don’t cause trouble for us."
"Er, right. Got it, Sage." Lin Tianhe instantly became as meek as a lamb and didn’t dare to gawk anymore.
As they were talking, a rather pretty female Merfolk came scurrying out of the gate’s passageway. She ran up to them, blinking her large, blue-pupiled eyes, and asked in a timid voice,
"Esteemed Beast Masters from another race, do you need a guide?"
"A guide?" Han Ning and Lin Tianhe exchanged a look. Han Ning quickly sized up the Merfolk girl and asked with a smile, "What are your rates?"
Fortunately, the existence of Spiritual Power made communication with other races much less difficult.
Even if the other party didn’t understand the Universal tongue, they could still communicate using Spiritual Power.
"My name is Hailian. My rates are very affordable! For just 100 Pearls, I can be at your service all day."
The Merfolk girl, Hailian, had the upper body of a human girl who looked to be eighteen or nineteen. Her features were delicate, and iridescent white scales were embedded in her cheeks. From her neck to her stomach, she was covered in a dense layer of blue and white scales. Below her navel, she had the tail of a fish.
While her overall appearance didn’t quite align with human beauty standards, her human-like face was pleasant enough to look at—certainly much easier on the eyes than that Shuili from before.
"100 Pearls? Deal. Please show us around Shuixiu City." Realizing they would need a guide to get to know such a large city, Han Ning didn’t bother to haggle. He simply took out 100 Pearls and hired the girl on the spot.
"Thank you. This way, please."
Hailian accepted the Shell Pearls, gave a small nod, and headed into the passageway.
Han Ning and the others followed her through the long passageway and into Shuixiu City proper.
The clean, tidy streets were lined with buildings painted in shades of blue and white. Some houses were even inlaid with seashells and starfish of various shapes, giving them a distinctly exotic flair.
Next to each house was a pool of water, ranging in size from a few dozen to several hundred square meters.
Many Merfolk and Sea Deer children were laughing and splashing about in the clear water.
Perhaps because of its proximity to the port, the streets were lined with all sorts of shops selling local specialties. Some Merfolk stood at their storefronts, loudly hawking their wares in a broken version of the Universal tongue.
Numerous Beast Masters, clearly from different regions and races, walked along the relatively narrow streets. The sounds of conversation, haggling over goods, and boisterous laughter all blended together, creating a bustling atmosphere.
"I gotta say, this place is pretty commercially developed. It could rival some of the shopping streets back in Xia Country." Lin Tianhe’s curious eyes couldn’t rest, and he started examining the merchandise on both sides of the street again.
"Esteemed sirs, what brings you to Shuixiu City? Are you looking to purchase supplies related to Soul Beasts, experience multi-racial battles, or... find some entertainment?" Hailian asked, smiling at Han Ning, who seemed to be the leader.
"Do you have a place to gather information here?" Sage suddenly interjected. "What I mean is... where can we get news from the mainland?"
"If you wish to learn about recent major events on the Eastern Continent, you can go to the Merfolk Tavern. Beast Masters there sell information; you just need to consult the owner," Hailian explained. She took a map woven from white seaweed out of a small scallop shell at her waist and pointed to a specific area.
Sage only needed a single glance before nodding. "Got it."
He then turned to Han Ning. "Hom and I are going to that tavern to ask about the Witch Spirit Race. You all can go about your business."
Han Ning knew they had left their homeland thousands of years ago and dreamed of returning to the territory of the Witch Spirit Race, so he didn’t object. Instead, he took out half the currency he was carrying, placed it in another waist pouch, and handed it to Sage. "Be safe."
Sage didn’t refuse. He fastened the pouch to his waist, nodded at Han Ning, and disappeared with Hom into the crowded street.
"So, Han Ning, where to now? That Merfolk girl mentioned a place for ’entertainment.’ How about we check that out first?" Lin Tianhe whispered, sidling up to Han Ning and speaking in the Xia Country language only the two of them understood.
"Let’s check out the materials market first, see if we can find any high-level materials," Han Ning said after a moment’s thought. "Besides, isn’t your Soul Beast almost ready to evolve?"
"Right. Then let’s hit the materials market first. Maybe we can find some materials suitable for my Xiaoyu’s evolution."
And so, Han Ning smiled and said to Hailian, "Hailian, could you please take us to the biggest materials market in Shuixiu City?"
"Of course, no problem. Please follow me, sirs." Hailian bowed slightly. Then, to the astonishment of Han Ning and the others, she summoned a massive shrimp about three meters long, covered in a cyan carapace.
She vaulted onto the shrimp’s head, pointed to its slightly arched back, and smiled. "The materials market is a ways from here. Please, sirs, climb aboard."
"Now this is great service. A guide and a ride," Han Ning remarked with a laugh, being the first to settle onto the massive shrimp’s back.
"Hold on tight! Cyan Scale Shrimp, let’s go!" Hailian gave the shrimp’s antennae a gentle tug, and the creature immediately shot forward at full speed.
Seated on the massive shrimp, Han Ning watched with great interest as the sights and sounds of the city sped past.
Along the way, he saw many small Soul Beasts living in harmony with the various races.
