Wizard: Building a Golem Legion From Zero
Chapter 475 - 463: Facing the MythChapter 475: Chapter 463: Facing the Myth
Allen stepped out of the Star Gate and onto Floating Island No. 6, codenamed "Serene Courtyard."
The scenery he imagined was nowhere to be found. Before him lay an endless, writhing carpet of dark red flesh.
The ground beneath his feet was a layer of dark red keratin, slightly springy to the touch.
Giant pillars of flesh tens of meters high stood all around, their surfaces covered in thick, cyan veins. Within these vessels flowed blood that emitted high concentrations of Magic Power radiation.
He was beginning to understand. This entire Floating Island was an inconceivable ecosystem composed of countless giant, fleshy organs.
To his left, a "hill" several hundred meters high was actually a giant, beating heart. Each beat produced a muffled, thunderous boom that made the ground beneath his feet tremble slightly.
To his right, a giant, lung-like structure slowly expanded and contracted like a bellows. The exhaled gas condensed high above into a pale yellow, acidic mist. The occasional "raindrops" that fell corroded sizzling pits into the ground.
Floating in midair were hundreds, even thousands, of translucent, jellyfish-like chunks of flesh. Trailing electrified nerve bundles, they drifted through the mist.
The ground split open into maws lined with sharp teeth, devouring any necrotic tissue that fell.
Further in the distance, countless giant, gut-like conduits crisscrossed, their surfaces covered in writhing cilia. They transported the half-digested remains of creatures from various Planes to some unknown destination.
There was no water, no plants.
The entire cycle of matter was built upon the growth and digestion of flesh.
This was... a very fresh, warm island.
And in the very center of the Floating Island, at the highest point of the bizarre sky, floated a giant eyeball over five hundred meters in diameter.
Its sclera was a murky, grayish-yellow and shot through with blood vessels; its pupil was a patch of pure, jet-black so deep it seemed to swallow light itself.
It hung there quietly, surveying the grotesque kingdom below.
The DSeek alarm had long since surpassed its threshold. A red warning box flashed frantically on Allen’s retina, screaming the word, "Flee."
Allen could only ignore it.
He saw a single "road" extending from his feet—a massive nerve bundle, relatively flat and free of mucus, that wound its way to the spot directly beneath the giant eyeball.
No invitation, no guidance.
But there was only one choice.
Allen straightened his black Wizard Robe, the symbol of the Association, and took a step forward.
A faint bio-electric current traveled up from the nerve bundle beneath his feet, a tingling sensation that felt as if it were probing every inch of his soul.
Clusters of nerve ganglia grew on either side of the path.
These ganglia flickered with a faint blue light, and the frequency of their glow changed as Allen drew closer.
A giant pillar of flesh beside the path suddenly split open, squeezing out a viscous tumor. Upon landing, it rapidly sprouted jointed limbs and crawled away toward a distant swamp of flesh.
He passed a giant stomach sac. Through its transparent walls, he could see a worm several meters long being dissolved by potent acid, emitting a horrid, grating sound.
He walked through a "forest" made of optic nerve fibers. The end of each fiber connected to a smaller eyeball, and thousands upon thousands of these eyes turned in unison to focus on him, their gaze filled with curiosity.
Finally, he reached the end of the path, standing beneath the giant, five-hundred-meter eye.
He stopped and looked up.
Before such a colossal, fleshy organ, he seemed infinitesimally small.
Time seemed to freeze.
After what felt like an eternity, the giant eyeball began to move, slowly turning.
The all-consuming, jet-black pupil slowly contracted, finally locking its focus onto Allen.
The air rippled. A voice resounded directly in the space around Allen.
The voice was surprisingly gentle, devoid of any condescending authority.
"I can already see the potential of a Morning Star in you."
"With the depth of your research, you are certain to touch upon the Law."
Allen quickly realized who was speaking.
’This voice must belong to the Moonlight Mage, Augustus.’
’This eyeball is just a mouthpiece, or perhaps a giant biological terminal.’
’His true self is probably in some strange Plane, playing go against an unnamable entity, while sparing a ten-thousandth of his consciousness to converse with a lowly Second-level Wizard like me.’
He bowed slightly, his tone maintaining the requisite respect. "Thank you for your praise, Your Excellency Valentine. I have only been fortunate enough to find some trivial inspiration on my path to exploring the truth."
"Trivial?"
Augustus’s voice grew thicker with amusement. "Transforming a native Plane on the verge of collapse into an efficient factory for mass-producing Transcendents and a Witchcraft laboratory... that can hardly be called trivial."
’He knows.’
’He knows everything.’ Although he had expected as much, Allen still sighed internally.
"That ’Cyber Spirit Realm’ of yours is quite interesting."
Augustus continued, "Its underlying concept reminds me of the Spiritual Thought Network’s ’Memory Experience Pack’ technology. But you achieved broader coverage at a lower cost and even incorporated concepts like ’Soul Fluctuation Collection’ and a ’Distributed Computing Network.’ Very creative."
Allen’s heart sank.
He felt like a child building a sandcastle, proud of his miraculous creation, only to discover a master architect standing behind him, observing his clumsy efforts with amusement.
"It’s merely a crude imitation using existing technology, incomparable to truly sophisticated techniques," Allen said, his tone growing ever more humble.
"No, you’re brilliant," Augustus’s tone left no room for doubt. "Especially when it comes to managing the ’Humanity’ variable. You’ve done a better job than many High-tier Wizards. That kind of ingenuity is rare..."
The Moonlight Mage paused, then in a tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather, he said something that froze Allen’s very soul.
"As for that ’Micro Magic Power Cycle’... consider it a small welcome gift from me."
What—?!
Allen snapped his head up, his mind going blank for a moment.
For the first time, the composure on his perpetually calm face started to crack.
’Micro Magic Power Cycle...’
’Wasn’t that the S-rank patent from Sword Art Online, submitted by the player named ’Ghost’?’
Allen had personally reviewed Ghost’s file: a native-born, fifteen-year-old genius.
The kid had topped the leaderboards in both games, but showed no abnormalities. Allen had even marked him as a "prime asset," slated for priority development.
He felt a chill shoot from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
’He thought he was the one fleecing the sheep.’
’He thought he was in control of this virtual world, but it turned out he was the one being hand-fed by a top dog on an undercover inspection tour?’
Before Allen could recover from the shocking revelation, Augustus’s gentle, slightly amused voice continued in his ear.
"That child, Rein. He’s quite interesting, isn’t he?"
"He tried out your game for me. I must say, it’s very well done."
The Moonlight Mage’s voice seemed to carry a hint of minor annoyance.
"It’s just that your anti-addiction system for minors... it gets in the way."
Allen stood there, dumbfounded, his Humanity Value fluctuating wildly.
’So Rein was just a probe for Augustus.’
’His supposedly secret "experiment" had been running under the watchful eye of a Moonlight Grand Mage from the very beginning.’
’He’d even... paid this Grand Wizard’s alt account a patent fee of 100,000 Magic Stones.’
’What should I do? Seeking advice online, this is urgent.’
