Chapter 594: Chapter 36: Banishment Spell
Murphy wasn’t surprised that Rodrick had broken free of his control.
There was an old saying: Laws change with the world.
Laws are like gravity; just as gravity differs from planet to planet, the Laws of one world differ from another.
This means that the same Magic, the same Dao Pattern, might become completely useless in a different world.
Even if one used a Path borne by a Spirit Root, that was ultimately just a small world carved out by an individual. It could compensate for the differences in Laws to a degree, but it could never withstand the overwhelming pressure of the greater world.
Otherwise, the Wizards in the Old Realm wouldn’t have been so brutally suppressed by the Church Court.
By the same logic, when Rodrick crossed from the New Realm into the Nightmare World, the Intimidating Heart Dao Pattern Murphy had left on him was naturally affected.
Its failure was to be expected.
The solution was also simple.
He just had to apply it again.
However, before that...
Murphy quietly extended his Spirituality, sensing the Dimensional Energy within this gray-white world.
’Just as I thought.’
In the Nightmare World, the traces of the Magic Net were faint, incredibly so.
The ubiquitous, all-pervasive surveillance that existed in the New Realm was almost gone here.
Only the faintest of fluctuations drifted slowly in the Source Sea.
Murphy nodded slightly.
’This is exactly what I wanted.’
[Mind Furnace, activate.]
[Command received.]
[Extracting Spiritual Qi from the Source Sea...]
[Deducing advanced applications of the Celestial Phenomenon Dao Pattern...]
[Loading basic framework... Load complete.]
[Simulating Energy flow paths... Simulation in progress...]
...
Rodrick remained rooted to the spot, completely motionless.
He had heard what Murphy said.
"It seems you’ve broken free of my control."
And then... there was nothing.
Murphy didn’t say another word, didn’t make a move, didn’t do anything at all.
He just stood there quietly, his gaze no longer on Rodrick, but fixed on some point in the void, as if watching something.
A storm raged in Rodrick’s mind.
’What do I do?’
’What do I do?!’
He screamed inwardly, but his body felt as if it were nailed to the ground, afraid to make the slightest move.
Rodrick could feel that piercing gaze leave him.
But he didn’t dare raise his head. He didn’t dare look to see what Murphy was doing.
He simply maintained his subservient posture, his mind racing with a thousand different thoughts.
’No.’
’I can’t just stand here panicking.’
’Panic won’t solve anything.’
’I have to find a way. I have to find a way to deal with this creature from another world.’
’Run?’
’I already know that’s impossible. I can’t return to the Imperial territories, and the Nightmare World is fraught with peril. How long could a mere First-Level Wizard like me survive here alone?’
’Besides, as a Level 3 Life Form, Murphy is definitely much faster than me. I probably wouldn’t get far before he caught up.’
’Beg for mercy?’
’Even more impossible.’
’We’ve already dropped all pretenses; Murphy will never trust me again.’
’Under these circumstances, for a noble Imperial citizen like me to beg a lowly creature from an Outer Plane for mercy?’
’I’d rather die.’
’Ask the natives of the Nightmare World for help?’
’Use their strength against him.’
’A joke. Those natives are more dangerous and bizarre than Murphy. I have no idea what would happen if I ran into them. It might be a fate worse than death.’
’Then there’s only one way...’
Just then, Rodrick’s Spirituality inadvertently swept across the Source Sea.
And then, he froze.
Normally, he didn’t pay much attention to the fluctuations in the Source Sea.
Compared to the orderly Source Sea within the Imperial territories, managed by the Magic Net, the Source Seas of other planes were too chaotic and complex.
All sorts of turbulent Energy, dimensional fluctuations, and Law fragments were interwoven, forming a chaotic ocean.
Most of the time, it was impossible to properly sort through and analyze it all.
Especially for a First-Level Wizard like him.
But now, as he pondered how to deal with Murphy, his Spirituality unintentionally caught a strange disturbance in the Source Sea.
The chaotic Energy was converging in a single direction.
That direction.
It was in front of him.
It was the direction where Murphy stood—a very clear and obvious direction.
Rodrick snapped his head up and looked at Murphy.
The dark figure stood there quietly, unmoving.
But in Rodrick’s spiritual perception, the Energy from the Source Sea was frantically pouring into his body, being absorbed, devoured, and digested.
The scene was like an invisible behemoth opening its great maw, devouring everything around it.
Rodrick’s pupils contracted sharply.
’Murphy is absorbing Dimensional Energy!’
’What is he doing?’
’What in the world is he trying to do?!’
Rodrick’s breathing grew ragged, his heart hammering wildly in his chest.
He didn’t know what Murphy was doing.
But he knew that no matter what this creature from another world wanted to do, he absolutely could not let him succeed.
’Once he completes some unknown ritual, or recovers to his peak state, or masters some terrifying power...’
’...I’ll really be finished.’
He couldn’t hesitate any longer. Any more hesitation would truly lead him to a point of no return.
Rodrick gritted his teeth, his hand already creeping silently toward a pocket at his waist.
There, he had a scroll he had treasured for many years.
[Banishment].
The effect of this Magic was simple: to expel anyone who was not a native of this plane.
It was a form of Magic developed by Wizards in ancient times, specifically to deal with creatures from the Otherworld.
It was hailed as a divine technique that allowed the weak to defeat the strong.
Even a low-level Wizard could use it to banish powerful life forms.
This wasn’t some exaggerated effect cooked up by the scroll’s vendor for a sale.
It was history, recorded in the archives of the Wizard World.
