Chapter 595: Chapter 36: Banishment
During the long planar wars, countless powerful creatures from the Otherworld had been banished back to their own worlds by this very magic.
Moreover, this magic had been refined through the Dawn War and countless iterations during the Era of Empires, making it even more potent.
The only regret was that he was not currently within Imperial territory.
If he were within Imperial territory, with the amplification of the Magic Net, this magic would be even more powerful.
As a First-Level Wizard, Rodrick would even dare to use a scroll within the Empire to challenge lifeforms that were nearly Fourth Level.
But even so, this was enough.
Rodrick had hesitated before and hadn’t used this magic right away, but not because he had forgotten about it.
It was because the cost was too great.
Using the Banishment spell required consuming a precious scroll and would damage his own spirit, not to mention the hefty medical bills afterward.
He might even have to take out a loan.
The mere thought of the pressure of repaying the loan gave Rodrick a headache.
The interest rates on those loans were terrifyingly high.
He might go bankrupt and not even be able to pay the level tax.
But no matter how bad the headache, it was better than death.
Even living in debt wasn’t necessarily better than death.
’But if I die, there’s no chance for a better tomorrow!’
Rodrick took a deep breath and suddenly raised his head.
He plastered that respectful smile back onto his face.
"My lord!"
He spoke, his voice carrying the perfect amount of humility and flattery.
He knew it might not work, but it didn’t matter. All he needed was to make the other party hesitate, whether out of confusion, doubt, or even a sneer of derision. That would be enough.
Therefore, the moment the words left his mouth, his hand had already shot out.
The scroll flew from his sleeve, instantly unfurling in mid-air and erupting in a dazzling silver light!
"Banishment!"
Rodrick let out a low shout as all the Magic Power in his body surged madly into the silver light.
The silver light transformed into countless fine chains, which coiled toward Murphy like living creatures.
The chains pierced through space and time, aiming straight for the Otherworld mark on Murphy’s body.
Hit!
A flash of ecstasy appeared in Rodrick’s eyes.
’Success!’
He watched as the silver chains wrapped around Murphy layer by layer, watched as Murphy’s figure grew blurry and distorted within them.
Then, he dropped the disguise.
The long-suppressed rage, the pride of being an Imperial citizen, the disdain and contempt for creatures of the Otherworld—it all erupted at this moment.
"Hahaha!"
Rodrick roared with laughter, his shrill, ear-piercing cackle echoing through the gray-white streets.
"Do you see?! This is the power of the Empire!"
He pointed at Murphy, his face full of contempt.
"How the weak can triumph over the strong—that is a power you creatures from the Outer Planes will never understand!"
"You lowly parasites, you think you’re worthy of making me bow and scrape?"
"Worthy of controlling my mind?"
"Worthy of standing before me, looking down at me with those superior eyes?"
"By what right!"
His voice grew sharper and more frantic.
"I saw through you long ago! You’re no Third-Level Wizard! You’re just an illegal stowaway who crawled out of a gutter! A piece of trash with no identity! Scum that deserves to do nothing but grovel and die in the sewers!"
"You think you can do whatever you want just because you have a little power?"
"You think you can put on an act in front of me?"
"You think you can escape the judgment of the Empire?"
"In your dreams!"
Rodrick panted, the finger he pointed at Murphy trembling.
"The Banishment spell will send you back where you belong! Back to your filthy rat hole!"
"And then, when I return to the Empire, I’ll report to the Magic Net Administration Bureau! I’ll report your features, your aura, your everything—all of it!"
"You’ll be wanted by the Empire! Hunted by countless Wizards! You’ll be a rat everyone wants to stomp out!"
"Even escaping back to your home plane will be useless!"
"The Empire will invade it, plunder it, and destroy it!"
"And you! You will be the sinner of your plane, the sinner who brought its destruction!"
"This is what happens when you cross someone from the Empire!"
His voice echoed through the gray-white streets, filled with hysterical madness and triumph.
However, the binding silver chains suddenly vanished.
Murphy’s figure solidified in place once more.
Rodrick’s laughter came to an abrupt halt.
His eyes widened, his mouth hung open as he watched the chains slowly dissipate into the air.
"How... How is that possible..."
His voice became dry and hoarse, completely devoid of its earlier triumph.
"This is impossible... This is impossible..."
"The Banishment spell was developed specifically for creatures from the Otherworld... It’s meant to counter you... How could it fail..."
"How could it..."
"And it clearly had..."
"It had already..."
Murphy remained standing in the same spot, motionless.
As if everything that had just happened had nothing to do with him.
Gradually, the Dimensional Energy that had been surging into his body began to calm down.
He had finished his deductions.
Then, his dark eyes shifted their focus back to Rodrick, and he spoke.
"What were you just doing?"
Rodrick looked into those eyes.
They were still calm, as placid as a pool of stagnant water.
But for some reason, the moment he met that gaze, Rodrick felt a chill shoot up from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
He shivered.
Then, a strange emotion welled up inside him.
It wasn’t fear.
It wasn’t anger.
It was...
’I’m not afraid!’
That’s right, Rodrick was no longer afraid!
He had already shown his true colors.
He had already made his move.
He had already failed.
’What more could happen?’
’The worst that can happen is death.’
But he was Rodrick, a proud citizen of the Empire, a First-Level Wizard! Even if he had to die, he would die with dignity!
He had to let this lowly creature from an Outer Plane know that Imperial people were not to be trifled with!
He abruptly straightened his back, tilted his head up, and, with all his might, began to curse loudly:
"I... I’m a lowly idiot!"
Rodrick froze.
’What am I saying?’
’How could I be saying something like this?’
But his mouth continued to move uncontrollably.
"I’m a reckless fool... a good-for-nothing who doesn’t even know his own place..."
His eyes bulged as he tried to shut his mouth, to stop these absurd words.
But he couldn’t.
The words poured out of him unendingly, as if they had a life of their own.
"I actually dared to attack my lord... I dared to question my lord’s authority... What am I... I’m just a mere First-Level Wizard... I’m not even worthy of carrying my lord’s shoes..."
Rodrick’s body began to tremble.
He didn’t know what was happening.
But he knew it had everything to do with those eyes.
Those black, bottomless eyes that seemed capable of devouring everything.
"I deserve to die... I deserve to die a thousand deaths..."
His voice grew louder and more frantic.
"I’m an ungrateful animal... a treacherous bastard... My lord spared my dog’s life... but I repaid his kindness with malice... I deserve to die... I deserve to die..."
He dropped to his knees, his hands clawing at the gray-white flagstones. He pressed his forehead to the ground, his whole body shaking like a leaf.
But his mouth kept moving.
"I’m trash... a bedbug... I’m the filth in the sewer... How does a disgusting thing like me deserve to live in this world..."
"My lord didn’t kill me out of mercy... but I... but I... I deserve to die... I deserve to die..."
He began to slam his head against the ground.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Again and again, he slammed it with all his might.
Blood seeped from his forehead, staining the gray-white flagstones red.
But he didn’t stop.
He couldn’t stop.
"This dog’s life of mine was a gift from my lord... and I actually... I actually..."
"I’m not human... I’m an animal... I’m a piece of trash worse than an animal..."
"My lord... I beg you... I beg you to kill me... I don’t deserve to live... I don’t deserve it..."
His voice was so hoarse it was almost unintelligible, tears and blood streaming down his face.
Like a man gone mad, he knelt there, frantically cursing himself while smashing his head against the ground.
Murphy watched him quietly.
His eyes remained placid.
Devoid of any emotion.
As if he were looking at a stone.
