Wizard: I Have a Cultivation System
Chapter 596 - 37: The Flaw of [Control Human]Chapter 596: Chapter 37: The Flaw of [Control Human]
Murphy quietly gazed at Rodrick, who was trembling as he knelt prostrate on the ground, and slowly spoke.
"Do you know why you’ve fallen into such a state?"
Rodrick lifted his head. Blood and cold sweat dripped from his forehead, his eyes filled with confusion and humiliation.
Murphy continued, "It’s because you harbor negative emotions toward me in your heart. Once thoughts like anger, contempt, or resentment arise, they become the soil in which self-rebellion takes root."
"If you didn’t want to curse me and held no negative feelings toward me, you wouldn’t have met such a fate."
Rodrick was stunned.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but found that the words he’d used to curse himself were gone.
His mouth was finally his own again.
He suddenly realized something, and his face instantly flushed crimson.
It was shame.
It was humiliation.
He had actually knelt before this creature from an Otherworld, reviled himself with the vilest words, and slammed his head against the ground like a groveling dog.
But the moment that thought arose—
"I’m an ungrateful beast... an ungrateful bastard..."
Those words poured from his mouth again as his body, no longer under his control, fell prostrate once more, his forehead pressed against the gray flagstones.
Rodrick’s face turned an even deeper shade of red.
He realized that as long as he harbored even a trace of a negative emotion toward Murphy, he would immediately fall back into that frenzied state of self-loathing and self-deprecation.
’But that realization itself is a negative emotion!’
’It’s anger!’
’It’s humiliation!’
’It’s hatred!’
And so—
"I should die... I deserve to die a thousand deaths..."
He started cursing himself again, his body trembling once more.
His face flushed, so he cursed himself.
His face flushed deeper, so he cursed himself more intensely.
The more he cursed himself, the deeper his face flushed.
Rodrick’s complexion shifted wildly between pale and crimson. His entire body convulsed as if he were having a seizure, one moment straightening his back to stand, the next throwing himself prostrate to spout frantic insults.
Murphy just watched him quietly, his dark eyes betraying no fluctuation of emotion.
Those at the longevity tier may have complete self-awareness, but they are still incapable of creating a second self.
They still lack a deep understanding of the source of inspiration and insight, having only reached a state of acting on every whim.
That is to say, they could simply choose not to do what they didn’t want to do.
To put it more simply, their control over the fundamental particles that constitute cognition and thought is incomplete. They cannot grasp the changes in every single particle during the entire thought process.
Therefore, how could a mere Intimidating Heart Dao Pattern possibly seize complete control of a First-Level Wizard’s consciousness?
This was also why Murphy didn’t use the Control Human spell.
This wasn’t, of course, because he didn’t walk the path of a Wizard and couldn’t use Control Human at a power exceeding the Apprentice Level.
Besides, hadn’t he used it just fine back in the Old Realm?
Why did he stop using Control Human during the latter period of his rule over the Church Court?
He had clearly used it before in the Duval Territory, so why did he stop later on?
This wasn’t because Murphy had some sort of moral qualms, of course.
Nor was it because he was unable to use Control Human to control the Cardinals, Archbishops, and others.
Besides, even if he couldn’t use the Wizard Level version, wouldn’t the Apprentice Level one have been easy enough to use?
The Church Court had a great many people below the rank of Archbishop, and they were a vital administrative force.
Controlling them would, in a sense, mean controlling the Church Court.
It would have made it much harder for Adrian, Ambrosius, and the others to rebel later on.
And it certainly wasn’t that Murphy had forgotten.
The real reason was that Murphy had, by that time, already realized the flaws of Control Human.
Specifically, that the minds of those controlled by Control Human had no more room for growth.
The principle behind the Control Human spell is, in essence, an imitation of the Wizard’s process of Elementalization and the permanent solidification of thought and self.
As mentioned earlier, even beings at the longevity tier cannot grasp the changes of every fundamental particle.
How could a mere degraded version of the spell—an Apprentice or even Official Level magic—possibly achieve that?
For Control Human to be highly effective, it must inevitably castrate something.
Namely, things like a person’s inspiration and capacity for insight.
A person controlled by Control Human over a long period would truly and gradually turn into a living, weak AI—or, in other words, a puppet whose thoughts were completely solidified, with no potential for development.
At that time, the Church Court was developing vigorously.
Not just in the natural sciences, but in the social sciences as well.
The administrative personnel were the very soil in which the social sciences could grow.
What Murphy needed to create was a civilization that was strong, independent, and self-sufficient.
Not a parasite.
Therefore, this civilization naturally had to have its own social sciences to solve the problems of spiritual and cultural construction that arose during its growth.
Once the minds of the administrative personnel were locked down by Control Human, the potential to develop social sciences would be lost.
Furthermore, in the future, with sufficient advances in the natural sciences, it wasn’t as if Control Human couldn’t be broken.
When that time came, what kind of problems would arise when those administrators, controlled for so many years, suddenly broke free from their shackles?
Murphy had once seriously considered this question.
He recalled certain historical events from his past life on Earth.
For instance, a vast Imperial state that, after several hundred years of feudal rule, suddenly overthrew its Emperor and established a republic.
Those people, who had lived for generations under the shadow of imperial power, gained their freedom overnight.
And then?
Then came chaos.
Some people, not knowing how to exercise their right to vote, sold their ballots to the highest bidder.
