Wizard: Starting from the Skill Tree

Chapter 839 - 762: Setting an Ambush

The two Mechanical Wizards stood in the deserted herb field, their faces equally grim.

One of them squatted down, pinched a handful of scattered soil between his fingers, brought it to his nose for a sniff, then raised his head to look at Andre.

"He just left not long ago. The scent is still here."

Andre turned around and stared at him.

The Wizard took out a palm-sized metal disk from his waist, its surface engraved with dense runes, and with a groove in the center.

He placed the handful of soil into the groove and lightly touched the edge of the disk with his fingertip.

The runes lit up, and the soil in the groove transformed into a wisp of pale golden air absorbed by the disk.

A moment later, a dark golden dot appeared in the center of the disk, pulsing slowly and pointing northwest.

"This is the Tracking Device." The Wizard stood, a hint of pride in his voice, "As long as there’s a trace of scent remaining, it can lock onto the target’s location. The effective range is five hundred kilometers."

Andre’s lips curled slightly upwards.

"Let’s go."

The three figures dashed out of the cave, speeding off in the direction indicated by the Tracking Device.

The light on the Tracking Device moved slowly, extremely fast, with direction constantly changing; Duke was clearly also moving at high speed.

"Underground." The Wizard holding the disk suddenly said, "He’s below, moving fast; he should have entered Elementalization form."

Andre’s brows furrowed slightly.

Elementalized escape, the trickiest way to flee.

Traveling underground, with high speed and strong concealment, is hard to intercept.

"Can we catch up?"

"For now, yes. But if the distance extends over three hundred kilometers, the signal will start to weaken. Beyond five hundred kilometers, it’s completely lost." The Wizard quickened his pace, "We must intercept him before he opens up a gap."

The three of them stopped talking and pursued at full speed.

Andre’s bloodline true form appeared again, wings spread wide, gliding at low altitude.

The legs and backs of the two Mechanical Wizards simultaneously split open, revealing silver-white metal skeletons, emitting pale blue energy flames, their speed suddenly surged.

The three figures madly charged across the Gobi desert, kicking up clouds of dust.

The dot on the Tracking Device fluctuated in speed, its direction constantly changing; Duke was evidently trying to shake them off.

But the dot never disappeared.

...

Duke traveled underground for a full hour before emerging from the rock strata.

He chose a leeward mountain hollow, sat beside a giant rock, and took a few sips of water from a leather pouch.

Three days of continuous running without a sip of water, yet his Spirit remained quite strong.

What’s baffling him was the feeling of being pursued never faded.

The first time he sensed someone trailing him was two hours after escaping the herb field.

He thought it was just a coincidence, changed direction several times, went deep underground hundreds of meters, even crossed an underground Dark River.

But that elusive locking sensation, like an invisible string, always trailing behind him.

He purposely circled a large loop, first heading north for a few hours, then bent east, finally turned south.

Still ineffective, the pursuit feeling remained constant.

On the third day, he accelerated, pushed Elementalization to the extreme, sand streams crazily traveled through rock layers, running hundreds of kilometers in one breath.

While resting, the feeling of being watched reappeared.

Duke put down the water pouch, brows tightly knit.

The opponent must have some tracking method, able to lock onto his scent.

Though he didn’t linger long in the herb field, it was enough to leave traces.

And failing to shake off in three days indicates the tracking method has a long effective range with high precision.

He stood up, dusted off his clothes.

Constant running wasn’t a solution.

The opponent obviously came prepared; although his Magic Power recovered quickly, he couldn’t be constantly monitored, or he’d have no chance to proceed with the assessment.

He must deal with them.

Duke surveyed the surroundings.

It was a desolate hilly area, the terrain undulating with gullies crisscrossing.

In the distance were several low stone mountains, their bodies weathered and pockmarked, filled with natural caves and cracks.

This kind of terrain is most suitable for an ambush.

He chose a valley. The valley wasn’t large, surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides, with only a narrow entrance.

At the valley bottom, there was a naturally formed cave, the opening not large but surprisingly deep, a perfect hiding spot.

Standing at the valley entrance, Duke spread his Spiritual Power, carefully sensing the surrounding terrain and energy flow.

Then, he started setting up.

The first set of Witch Array, the Confusion Array Plate.

He buried the array plates in the crevices on either side of the valley entrance, activating them, while a faint light screen enveloped the entire entrance.

From the outside, the valley terrain would subtly warp, unobtrusively diverting one from the correct path.

It wasn’t an illusion, but advanced perception interference.

Clearly seeing the entrance, yet footsteps unconsciously shifted astray.

The second set of Witch Array, the Assault Array Plate.

He buried three array plates in a triangle in the center of the valley floor, connecting them with hair-thin energy threads, creating a massive triggering zone.

Once someone stepped in, the ground would suddenly collapse, countless stone spikes piercing up from below, simultaneously launching Wind Blades and ice cones from all directions.

Not fatal, but could certainly fluster an average Level 2 Wizard for a while.

The third set of Witch Array, the Siege Array Plate.

He buried the array plate at the open space before the valley cave, activating it so a semi-transparent energy barrier would rise from underground, sealing off the entire valley floor.

The barrier wasn’t particularly strong, but extremely resilient; breaking free would take at least ten breaths of time.
