The fleeting feeling at that moment was an exceedingly brief realization of the rules, vanishing in an instant.
Duke simply grasped that fleeting feeling, and was unable to capture it again immediately after.
He turned his head to look at the already concluded battle in the distance, feeling a sense of pity upon seeing the disintegrated corpse of the giant snake.
It was, after all, the corpse of a demigod-level giant snake, still very valuable material even in death.
But now, under the influence of Ares’s power, those materials had turned into a pile of iron scraps, worthless now.
"So this is the power of rules..." Duke pondered silently.
The demigod-level Magma Giant was indeed quite powerful, its body undoubtedly very strong as well.
However, such a life was still completely powerless in the face of the rule power of a Level 4 Knight.
This demigod-level Magma Giant did not cause significant losses to the 235th Legion, merely hindering their advance slightly.
Mostly slave creatures and a very few Level 1 Mages died, with overall strength not being majorly affected.
In the following days, the 235th Legion continued crossing the Red Ridge Mountains.
The mountain path was rugged, the march slow, but compared to the previous battle, these days of marching were relatively light.
The harassment and attacks of the Magma Giants were sporadic, mostly a few scattered warriors causing disturbances from the shadows and then turning to flee.
The slave creatures remained on high alert on both sides of the mountain path, nipping every harassment in the bud.
Occasionally, a few flying units would sweep out from behind the ridge, circle the skies above the legion a few times, and then be driven back by a volley from the long-range units.
There were no large-scale ambushes, nor was there anything that could threaten the main force of the legion.
On the sixth day, the last batch of troops crossed the Red Ridge Mountains.
The Black Stone Plain lay before them, its black rocky surface covered with a thin layer of volcanic ash, sparsely dotted with several large furnace clusters, like dark red bumps on the earth.
Duke stood at the foot of the mountain, gazing at the plain, knowing this would be the battleground for the next battle.
Forces from other directions were also gradually arriving.
The 227th Legion was in the northeast direction, and their troops had already set up camp on the edge of the plain, their camp filled with a dense array of tents and orderly lines of slave creatures visible from afar.
The 241st Legion was further east, their battle lines connected with the 227th Legion, securely sealing off the northeastern flank of the Magma Giants.
The 209th and 218th Legions were in the northwest direction, and their troops were crossing from the other side of the Red Ridge Mountains. According to the messages received, they were expected to reach their designated positions within three days.
The 253rd Legion was directly west, their battle lines the furthest distance away, advancing at the slowest pace, but steadily progressing.
The Six-Ring Tower had deployed over a dozen legions here, presently converging on the Black Stone Plain from all directions, compressing the Magma Giants’ forces onto this darkened scorched earth.
Ares convened the last meeting before the battle at the command post.
A military map of the Black Stone Plain was spread out on the long table, and the deployment of forces from both sides was densely marked.
The heads of each battle group sat around both sides of the long table, while Ares stood in front of the map, dissecting the battle plan.
After explaining the overall battle plan, Ares’s gaze fell upon Rex.
"The Twenty-Third Battle Group will not participate in the main attack." His voice was not loud, but it was very clear, "The entire group is to remain on standby and await my orders."
He did not explain why, nor did he inform them what orders they would be waiting for.
Duke and the others subsequently received instructions from Rex as well, to hold their positions and not participate in the initial phase of the war.
Although they had some doubts in their hearts, they could only accept the arrangement, for on the battlefield, everything must follow orders.
A few days later, the battle commenced.
The sky was still shrouded in grey, a dark red halo pressing overhead, enveloping the entire Black Stone Plain in a blood-red hue.
Duke stood on a high ground on the mountainside, with a broad view, able to overlook the entire battlefield.
The Twenty-Third Battle Group’s position was in the rear, temporarily without a task, everyone was waiting.
The battle on the Black Stone Plain reached a fever pitch before the sun had fully risen.
Looking down from the mountainside, the entire plain turned into a turbulent, burning picture.
The Slave Creature Legion pressed forward simultaneously from the northeast, southeast, northwest, and directly west, the gray-black tide surging from every corner of the horizon.
Millions of slave creatures were advancing at the same moment, the earth trembling beneath their feet, gray-white volcanic ash being stirred up, obscuring the sun.
The Magma Giants’ army surged out from the depths of the Black Stone Plain, like flowing magma erupting from underground fissures.
The two armies collided in the center of the plain.
At that moment, it seemed as though the heavens and earth changed color.
The heavy armor-clad slave creatures collided with the Magma Giants, the clash of shields and hammers sounding like thunder, rattling the eardrums painfully.
The shield walls of the heavy armored units caved under the charge of the Magma Giants, their hammers smashing onto the shields, warping, shattering, and scattering them.
But more heavy armored units filled the gaps from behind, blocking the breaches with their bodies, and thrusting spears into the bellies of the Magma Giants.
The scales of the Magma Giants shattered under the spears’ barrage, dark red blood and magma gushing from the wounds, splattering onto the slave creatures, igniting them.
The entire plain was on fire, the entire sky was trembling, the entire earth was flowing with dark red blood and magma.
The mass of the Slave Creature Legion and the fiery mass of the Magma Giants gathered together, clashing like two rivers, the roars echoing to the heavens.
