World Apocalypse: Apocalust

Chapter 49 - XLIX - Restless Gambler

Chapter 49: Chapter XLIX - Restless Gambler

Noah leaned back against the bed, weighing his options. The obvious choice was to spend as little as possible until he understood how the Gacha worked. There was no point blowing half his AP on a Gold pull if the reward turned out to be something completely useless.

Then again...

It’s called Gold for a reason.

Noah looked at the 500 AP option again.

The actual difference between the tiers was anyone’s guess. Noah had no idea what separated one rank from another, or how much of a difference each tier actually made. Still, if the names meant anything, Gold had to be significantly better than Silver. If not, he would see to it.

His attention shifted toward the screen.

"Okay. What exactly do I get from each tier?"

The System answered almost immediately, its presence surfacing in his mind before he had even finished a second thought.

〔Tier determines the minimum rarity and quality of the reward obtained.〕

〔Example:

Trash Ticket

Trash — 60%

Common — 25%

Uncommon — 10%

Rare — 5%

Epic and above: 0.5% chance each〕

He scanned the screen, taking his time as he read through each line. His eyes lingered on the percentages, moving steadily down the list until they reached the final entry.

〔Epic and above: 0.5% chance each〕

Noah halted in his tracks.

The sentence held his attention for a moment before an instinctive curiosity took over. His hand reached toward the lettering, as though touching it might somehow make the System’s wording any clearer.

"Epic and above..."

His finger hovered over the line.

"So that means there’s a chance I could get a Unique for only ten points? How does that make any sense?"

The System’s response came without hesitation. Its voice wasn’t heard so much as forced directly into Noah’s mind, reverberating through his thoughts with an unsettling clarity that left no room to ignore it.

〔Gacha rewards are determined independently with each purchase. The selected tier establishes the probability distribution used to determine the reward. Higher tiers provide more favorable distributions, increasing the likelihood of receiving higher-rarity rewards while reducing the likelihood of receiving lower-rarity rewards.〕

"You’re telling me I could spend ten AP and potentially get something worth way more than that?"

〔Affirmative. Gacha rewards are not directly equivalent to the amount of Apocalust Points spent. Lower-tier Gacha may produce rewards exceeding their purchase cost, though such outcomes become progressively less likely as the difference between the selected tier and reward rarity increases.〕

That made a little more sense. The price wasn’t determining the value of the reward. It was determining how favorable the odds were.

In other words, Trash wasn’t necessarily limited to Trash rewards. It simply had a much higher chance of giving him something he wouldn’t particularly care about. Paying more meant improving his chances of avoiding those disappointing results and increasing his chances of landing something worthwhile.

Noah’s eyes drifted back toward the example.

〔Trash Ticket〕

〔Trash — 60%〕

〔Common — 25%〕

〔Uncommon — 10%〕

〔Rare — 5%〕

〔Epic and above: 0.5% chance each〕

His eyes lingered on the final line.

So that’s the catch.

A Trash pull could theoretically produce something incredible, but the probability was so low that expecting it would be ridiculous. The higher tiers were essentially paying for consistency rather than putting a hard limit on what he could obtain.

And that answered another question.

"Then why would anyone buy the cheaper ones?"

〔Lower-tier Gacha requires fewer Apocalust Points, allowing you to perform more purchases with limited resources. While individual rewards are less consistent, repeated purchases provide additional opportunities to obtain higher-rarity rewards. Higher-tier Gacha is intended for when you’re willing to exchange a greater quantity of Apocalust Points for improved probabilities and greater reliability.〕

A moment passed before Noah nodded.

Okay.

That was actually pretty reasonable. It wasn’t necessarily about one option being objectively better than another. It was a matter of risk versus cost.

The cheaper tiers let him gamble more often, while the expensive tiers gave him better odds per attempt. With 950 AP, though, Noah wasn’t about to burn half of his points on a single Gold pull when he didn’t even know what the Gacha could give him.

I should test it first.

His gaze shifted toward the bathroom door. It remained quiet on the other side, suggesting Sage was still preoccupied with whatever it was she was doing in there.

He caught his bottom lip between his teeth, a pleased smile threatening to break through.

Perfect.

His attention turned back toward the interface.

〔Bronze Gacha Selected〕

〔Cost: 100 AP〕

〔Proceed with purchase?〕

〔Yes〕〔No〕

His finger hovered over the confirmation for a moment.

Then he pressed 〔Yes〕.

〔AP: 850〕

The violet interface immediately shifted, its previous information disappearing as a new screen began forming before him.

The violet interface dissolved, replaced by a small orb hovering in front of Noah. Unlike the System’s usual violet glow, this one shone with a warm bronze hue, its surface shimmering faintly as it began to rotate.

Its rotation gradually accelerated, bronze light spiraling inward until the entire orb compressed into a brilliant point. A soft chime rang through the room before the light suddenly burst outward, forcing Noah to squint as the orb vanished and something began taking shape within the interface.

Please be something good.

The light faded, revealing a small object suspended in the center of the screen.

〔Gacha Reward Obtained〕

〔Eternal Stamina〕

〔Rarity: Uncommon〕

〔Type: Passive Ability〕

〔Description: The user’s physical stamina is greatly enhanced, allowing them to maintain prolonged physical activity without significant fatigue. The effect is particularly pronounced during intimate activity.〕

Noah stared at the description, his expression slowly shifting as he read it a second time. Particularly pronounced during intimate activity. There was no mistaking what the System was getting at now. He had expected the Apocalust System to eventually show him something strange, but he hadn’t expected his very first Gacha reward to make its intentions quite so obvious.

"...So that’s what you’re about."

A quiet sigh escaped him, though there was a faint amusement behind it. At least it wasn’t useless. Enhanced stamina could have plenty of applications outside of intimacy—running, fighting, recovering between encounters.

His thoughts briefly wandered back to the other two rewards he’d been offered when he first awakened.

Eros.

Pleasure Conversion.

At the time, he’d dismissed them in favor of abilities that seemed more practical for surviving the apocalypse. Now, looking at Eternal Stamina, he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d underestimated just how much of the System’s abilities were geared toward something other than combat.

Noah glanced toward the bathroom again. Still nothing. His attention returned to the Gacha menu, where the remaining tiers waited patiently. Bronze had given him an Uncommon ability on his first attempt. Maybe that was a decent result. Or maybe he’d simply gotten lucky. Either way, with 850 AP still available, he had plenty of room to experiment. And judging by what he’d just received, Noah had a feeling the Gacha had more surprises waiting for him.

Noah’s gaze settled on the tier list again.

〔Silver — 250 AP〕

He had already tested Bronze. Now he wanted something better—something that might give him a clearer idea of how much the tiers actually changed the results.

With 850 AP remaining, spending another 250 wouldn’t put him in any real danger. He’d still have enough left to try a Gold pull later if he decided it was worth the cost.

Let’s see what Silver gives me.

Noah selected the tier.

〔Silver Gacha Selected〕

〔Cost: 250 AP〕

〔Proceed with purchase?〕

〔Yes〕〔No〕

He didn’t hesitate this time.

〔Yes〕

〔AP: 600〕

The interface dissolved, replaced by another orb—but this time, its glow was a cool silver, brighter and noticeably more intense than the bronze orb from before. It hovered silently for a moment before beginning to rotate, silver light gathering around its surface.

Noah leaned forward slightly.

"Alright. Show me what you’ve got."
