With his thoughts finally settled over his evolution, Leon stood up from the chair and stretched.

It was just a few minutes past nine in the morning, so he had a lot to do. First, he needed to deal with his friend.

Selene seemed to have been knocked out cold, as she didn’t even react when he called her name.

’It seems once she decides to trust someone, she loses all her layers of defense.’

Chuckling to himself, he scooped her into his arms to take her to her room. Even though there was nothing between them, it still felt improper for her to stay in his bed.

Today, he wasn’t so lucky. The moment he stepped out of the room, he was met by the intense stares of the maids, which made him freeze.

He immediately knew they had misunderstood. Lips twitching, he ignored them and carried Selene back to her room. After tucking her in bed, he stepped out and went downstairs.

There, he found Jones sitting on the couch while having a serious talk with Nicolas.

The moment they saw him, the two men sprang to their feet and saluted him. Although they were older, they respected Leon a lot. This was the apocalypse, and old customs had mostly crumbled.

As long as a person had the ability and talent, that person could rule over others.

"It seems something happened in my absence," He said, glancing around as he took a seat opposite them.

Nicolas nodded and immediately began his report.

"Yesterday, a heavy explosion occurred deep within the forest, and it stirred the mutated beasts. We had to defend the camp from them, and we lost a lot."

His expression turned solemn. "Ninety-eight evolvers died, and we’ve used more than half of our total ammunition reserves. Still, with Miss Marie’s help, we managed to repel them all and not lose ground."

Leon’s eyes flashed with guilt when he realized he was the indirect reason for the grim battle the camp had faced.

However, it was quickly replaced by firmness and determination. He couldn’t always control the indirect results of his actions, so a situation like this was unavoidable.

"Do we have any gains?" He asked, resting his chin on interlocked fingers.

Nicolas nodded. "We were able to get up to 3544 mutated beast corpses ranging from Level 7 to Level 32. The Tier One beasts were personally taken down by Miss Marie, while Master Jones and Miss Emily killed another one."

The dual-blade user felt awkward with the way Nicolas addressed him, but he didn’t complain.

Leon was truly impressed, as he didn’t think that their kill count could be that high. However, when he remembered the amount of modern weaponry used, it became acceptable.

What truly surprised him was the fact that Marie had been able to kill several Tier One beasts. Although she could kill one alone, killing them one after the other on a battlefield without rest was much more difficult.

"Marie. Where is she?"

Jones answered, "It looks like she’s evolving, so Emily stayed with her."

"Oh?" Leon was surprised, then slowly nodded. He fell silent, thinking about their next course of actions.

He had almost spent a week here, and only had one more week before the Manhattan zombies hit Brooklyn.

"Nicolas. I need you to prepare three large transport vehicles, and have their tires reinforced with mutated beast hide. I believe that is possible?"

The man nodded with a smile. "We’re already working on that. Even the engines and vehicle bodies are being reinforced to withstand mutated beast attacks."

Once again, Leon was impressed by the man’s foresight.

"Good. Very good," He nodded, then asked. "What about the soul crystals?"

Nicolas paused, then his eyes widened. "Oh! You mean those yellow crystals? Yes, I stored them separately—including the blue one."

Hearing this, Leon froze. "...blue crystal?"

"Uh... yes," Nicolas sighed. "It belonged to the Tier Two deer that Miss Marie killed yesterday. If it wasn’t for her, the walls might have collapsed under that beast’s attack."

Leon’s expression became serious, and he asked in a low voice.

"You said she killed it. How?"

Jones and Nicolas glanced at each other, then the latter explained.

"We fired four rockets at it, but it actually turned our own attack against us. If Miss Marie hadn’t used her shield to reflect the attack back at it, perhaps all the evolvers would have died last night."

Leon’s eyes widened, and he immediately stood up. Without saying anything, he hurried to Marie’s room.

After knocking, Emily came to open the door, and he stepped inside. Much to his relief, Marie didn’t appear injured.

If anything, she looked fine and peaceful.

’Wow... she really did it without dying.’

Still, he was relieved. Turning to Emily, he asked, "How long has she been unconscious?"

The woman answered seriously. "For about twelve hours now."

Leon nodded, then turned back to Marie. His eyes brightened when he sensed her moving, and he quietly stepped closer.

In a matter of seconds, her eyelids fluttered open, and her grey eyes immediately locked onto him.

She blinked once, then smiled when she realized she wasn’t hallucinating. Immediately, she sat up from the bed and turned to him.

"Boss, you’re back."

Leon nodded, his expression calm. "You did well holding the fort. Good job."

For some reason, hearing those words from him made the exhaustion feel slightly more worthwhile.

Meanwhile, couldn’t stop himself from reaching out and patting her head. Marie’s lips twitched, and she shot him an annoyed glare.

"You know I’m older than you, right?"

Her comment made Leon chuckle, as the weight in his chest lifted slightly.

"It doesn’t matter, though."

He let his hand linger for a while, then pulled back. His smile vanished, and he became serious again.

"Emily, can you excuse us?"

The blonde woman blinked, then nodded as she quickly stepped out.

"You’re Tier One now, right?" Leon asked.

Marie nodded, her expression mirroring his.

"Good. Then, let’s choose a class for you."

Although he wasn’t that knowledgeable about classes, he still couldn’t risk his direct subordinates foolishly choosing the wrong class that wouldn’t suit them. After all, Leon already had paths he wanted them to walk in.

With his Extraction ability, he could stack them with complementary abilities and traits that would put them a cut above their peers.

’No one at my side can afford to be weak.’
