World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 184: Manhattan Horde"In an orderly manner, get into the bus. Do not push, or you’ll be left behind."
The evolvers responsible for coordinating the survivors stood in front of the lines as they inspected everyone entering the bus. No one was allowed to take heavy loads or belongings with them—only clothes and other small kitchen utensils.
Gwen watched them from the corridor, then turned to Selene.
"What do you think Leon went to do?" She asked, puzzled.
Selene didn’t answer immediately. She gazed at the thick clouds, then spoke.
"To confirm something," She paused. "When did Cassie last check on the horde?"
Hearing this, Gwen’s expression turned serious. "About two days ago. She said they had just started crossing the bridge, and given the fact that zombies are dormant at night, it will take them about four days before they all cross over."
Selene’s brows furrowed slightly, but before she could say anything, she saw Leon walking towards them, his expression grim.
"Did you find anything?" She asked, stepping forward to meet him. Gwen followed, curious.
Leon shook his head, then glanced at the procession of people boarding the buses.
"Once the last person enters, we’re moving out immediately. The zombies might be closer than we think."
Gwen’s eyes widened in worry, and she turned to the evolvers, giving them the signal to hurry.
As the survivors hastened to get their seats inside the five buses—three from Floyd Camp and two extra from this base—the original team of nine gathered together at the gates.
"It’s been a while we’re all complete like this. The apocalypse really changed things," Reymond chuckled, a melancholic tone in his voice.
It was close to two months now since the apocalypse started, and yet it felt like years had passed. Oftentimes, he remembered their stay in the university’s field house, and their little adventures on campus.
"I guess the boarding school you went to paid off. You’re no longer a mommy’s boy," Gwen teased with a small grin.
Reymond’s expression changed, and he began coughing awkwardly. "W-what do you mean? I wasn’t a mommy’s boy or anything, dammit."
"Hahaha! Mommy’s boy!" Miguel laughed heartily, pointing a finger at him.
Reymond’s lips kept twitching, but he wisely chose to remain silent. Arguing back would only give them the incentive to tease him more.
After Miguel’s laughter died down, Richard turned to look at Leon.
The young man had his back turned to them, staring into the distance as if waiting for something.
"Boss, how do we split up to protect the buses? We might get attacked by zombies and mutated beasts along the way."
Without turning, Leon said, "Selene will be with the leading bus. You and Fel will be in the next one, followed by Gwen and Cassie, Miguel and Reymond, then Marie will be in the last one."
Richard nodded, then frowned. "What about you, Boss?"
Leon took out his spear, then pointed at the far end of the streets. "I’ll hold them off until you’re a safe distance away."
"Hold wh...?" Richard’s eyes widened as he saw tiny figures sprinting towards them from the distance.
"Ma’am, we’re done loading!" An evolver shouted to Gwen.
The brown-haired lady immediately gave the order. "Move out, now!"
The engines roared to life, and the buses began to drive out one after the other.
Selene walked up to Leon and asked, "Are you sure you can hold them off? If I’m here, we might be able to restrict them better."
Leon shook his head. "There’s a reason why I put you in the leading bus. I have a feeling things won’t be smooth at the front too."
Selene’s expression tightened, but she said no more.
The others looked at him with varying expressions, but none tried to convince him. It wasn’t like he would listen anyway.
"Be careful," Gwen said, her eyes filled with worry.
Leon gave her a sharp nod, then turned back to the zombie horde. In less than a minute, everyone was ready, and they drove off, heading towards Bedford.
Leon watched them leave, then glanced back at the horde of zombies that seemed endless.
"What a drag. And here I thought I’d be able to laze around during the ride."
He snorted and dashed forward to meet the advancing zombies.
"Since you guys are so eager, let me put you to rest."
One man and thousands of zombies met in the middle of the street and clashed. The first few zombies to reach Leon were sliced into chunks of body parts before they could even attack, and more followed. They were all unranked zombies, and posed no danger to Leon considering how strong he was now.
Although their numbers threatened to overwhelm him, Leon was no fool. He spun the spear around his body, each movement precise and full of intent. There was no wasted motion at all as he cut down to zombies piling toward him. The Star Stream’s kill notifications kept pouring in, but it had become background noise to him.
Bang!
The shaft of the spear cracked against the zombie’s face, knocking it back against the others of its kind. They toppled to the ground, and before they could stand up, the others trampled on them as they reached towards Leon.
For a few minutes, the advancing zombie horde was focused on Leon. Suddenly, they switched targets and began trying to go around him.
’Okay, this isn’t exactly easy since I’m not a wall,’ Leon thought as he dashed to the left, hooked the spear behind a zombie’s ankle and yanked.
The zombie that had been climbing the wall of a building was pulled back into the horde on the ground, trampled to death before it could recover.
Without stopping, Leon reversed the weapon and stabbed with the rear blade. Another zombie that wanted to rush past him was skewered, its brain juices coating Leon’s blade.
He immediately dived back to the front of the horde, killing those that were pushing forward. Still, there was a big problem.
No matter how many zombies he cut down, fresh ones poured in from behind. Their sheer numbers slowly compressed the battlefield, forcing Leon to retreat one step at a time.
Before long, he found himself standing before the emptied base. The zombies turned their attention to the building, seemingly eager to find humans.
Leon jumped back, landing almost a hundred meters away. Seeing the horde’s actions, his eyes darkened.
’So that was its target, huh?’
He straightened himself, then slowly walked towards the horde. The zombies had already searched the building, and to their disappointment, there were no humans there.
One by one, their heads turned to Leon, and low snarls escaped their rotten mouths.
Leon paused fifty meters away from them, and as soon as he did, the calm broke. Like unleashed dogs, the zombies roared and charged at him, swinging their claws straight at the human.
Leon’s gaze remained calm and indifferent as he whispered quietly.
"Darkness Descent."
