Meanwhile, the five modified buses continued down the road at moderate speed. The drivers kept their eyes fixed on the road, avoiding the collapsed building or ruined vehicles that littered the road. The thorn-covered bus was at the forefront, and in it were Selene and several strong evolvers from the special squad Leon had brought from the Floyd camp.

Seated at the front, Selene remained alert as she glanced at the surroundings. Leon’s warning had made her wary, and she was already on the edge.

’This place is too silent. One or two mutated beasts should have attacked us by now.’

A few seconds later, her eyes narrowed at the sight of a barricade ahead of them. That wasn’t the strange thing, though. The barricade wasn’t a normal one. Instead, it was a wall of mutated beasts tightly packed together like they were unwilling to let the buses leave.

Without delay, she opened the door and hopped out of the bus.

"Stop the bus," She said to the driver who complied immediately.

The other four buses screeched to a halt, and the evolvers came down with sharp expressions.

Seeing the wall of mutated beasts ahead, they felt stifled. They were abandoning their original base to avoid getting swept up by a zombie horde. Yet a beast horde was on their way, blocking their path.

"This..." Reymond’s eyes flashed with anger as he looked at the beasts. Seeing their coordinated appearance, it was obvious that they were being controlled by an intelligent lifeform.

Was it human? Was it a mutated beast?

"Selene..." He turned to the silver-haired lady. "There are quite a lot of them."

She nodded, slowly unsheathing her sword. As much as she would have preferred to mow down the wall of beasts with bullets, there was no longer any ammunition in the base.

"Form a protective formation around the buses. We’re pushing through," She said, her voice clear to all.

The evolvers nodded and spread out while the buses moved closer to each other, forming a tight defensive formation.

Gwen climbed atop the third bus in the middle, her expression sharp as she knocked an arrow against the bow. Although she might not be of much use against zombies, mutated beasts were a different case.

’If I do it well, I can definitely complete my second hardest evolution requirement.’

At the rear of the formation, Marie stood with her daughter, Nora. The girl had also been raised as an evolver, and she wasn’t any less fierce than her mother. Although Leon had initially been against the idea of letting her fight zombies and mutated beasts, he later agreed when he heard Marie’s reasoning.

Her words back then were, "If there ever comes a time when I am not around, I want her to be strong enough to protect herself."

Leon couldn’t refute her, so he agreed. Now, Nora was a powerful Level 18 evolver trained by her own mother.

She had two powerful abilities that Leon had personally picked for her, so she had no problem fighting a Level 20 creature.

Glancing at her daughter who held two axes with a serious expression, Marie couldn’t help but chuckle.

"Nora," She called softly. "If you’re tired, let me know, okay?"

The girl blinked, then nodded with a bright smile.

Soon, the procession of vehicles moved towards the mutated beasts barring their path.

Selene strode forward confidently, her steps fast. In a matter of seconds, she appeared before the mutated beasts and swung her sword.

’Glacial Edge.’

From her blade, an arc of ice energy sliced into the beasts at the front, cutting several of them in half and injuring the others. Finally, the calm beast formation shattered under a powerful roar from the west.

ROAR!!!

The powerful mutated beasts charged forward, their eyes blazing with the desire to kill and devour. Mutated dogs, mutated goats, mutated fowl, mutated cats, large mutated snakes...

Several beasts charged forward, aiming to tear apart the humans before them. Unfortunately, the human evolvers were no easy prey. Abilities burst forth from them, slamming into the beasts and knocking a few back.

The rest were unlucky, as they were immediately torn apart or blasted to death. The evolvers from the Williamsburg base had always been trained by Marie, and were definitely not some ragtag group of humans with weapons and abilities.

They were well-coordinated, each one carrying out their roles without intercepting the other.

A mutated snake slithered towards the convoy and spat acid at one of the buses. Before it could reach the bus, however, a semi-transparent barrier sprung up around the bus, blocking out the sizzling acid.

Before the mutated snake could understand how its attack was blocked, an assassin evolver moved in and killed it.

Although slow, the convoy of buses continued forward at a moderate space, and none of the beasts were able to reach them. It certainly wasn’t easy for the defending evolvers, as they had to run with the buses while protecting them from attacks.

However, none of them were normal humans, so they felt no huge strain.

Standing atop the middle bus, Gwen was pleased with the prowess of the evolvers. Most of them were at Level 20 already, while the weakest ones were at Level 18. This was irrefutably an elite team.

’As I thought, killing higher leveled beings to level up is really a cheat code,’ She smiled to herself, then turned slightly.

Her sharp brown eyes locked on a mutated spider rushing towards them, and she fired an arrow.

Thwip~!

The tip of the arrow barely pierced into the mutated insect’s skin, dealing almost no physical damage. However...

Shriek-!!!

The mutated spider howled in agony as it stumbled back, its soul torn and ravaged by Gwen’s ability.

’As I thought. I can’t really one-shot a Tier One creature right now.’

However, she didn’t need to one-shot it. Frenzied, the Tier One mutated spider began to lash out at the beasts around it, skewering them with its powerful legs and killing them.

Gwen left it to cause chaos among their ranks, then turned to another Tier One beast flying in the sky.

The mutated pigeon’s eyes locked onto her, and it darted back as soon as she fired her arrow. Unfortunately, it couldn’t escape today.

Like a homing missile, the arrow curved towards it and pierced into its side.

Gwen’s eyes glinted at the sight. ’Telekinesis never ceases to amaze me.’

The injured beast was thrown into disarray after receiving the soul attack, and it plummeted right into the beast horde surrounding them.

Just as Gwen was about to search for another beast, she heard an absurdly loud noise made from an elephant’s trunk.

The sound washed over the beasts and humans, drowning every other sound. Then, the beasts began to retreat. They abandoned attacking the humans and scattered.

At the front, Selene crushed the frozen head of a mutated fox beneath her feet, then looked around.

’A retreat?’

Instead of feeling relieved, her wariness shot through the roof, and she turned back to the convoy. Quickly, she found Gwen climbing back into the bus she was assigned to.

"I’ll be leaving you in charge. Is that fine?"

Gwen blinked in surprise and asked with a frown, "Is something wrong?"

Selene nodded, "The leader of this horde might be more intelligent than we thought. I also want to go check on that guy. If he gets trapped between the two hordes, he might not make it out alive."

Gwen’s eyes widened in panic, but Selene calmly placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Relax, he’ll be fine. I’ll make sure of it."

Hearing this, the young woman sighed and nodded.

"Leave it to me."
