Slice!

A rotting human head flew into the air, separated from its neck by a black spear. Leon jumped back and distanced himself from the other zombies.

After just three minutes of fighting, he had already reduced their numbers to eighteen. Unfortunately, his growing victory wasn’t without a cost.

There were several slash marks across his body that were struggling to close. It seemed even his Adaptation trait couldn’t easily overcome the corrupted mana.

However, he wasn’t overly worried. Even after being repeatedly injured, he still hadn’t turned. This proved that his trait could keep the infection at bay while building resistance and immunity.

Leon wasn’t reckless by any means, as this was a calculated move. If he was able to adapt to a zombie’s infection, then he wouldn’t have to worry about getting scratched or bitten in the future.

Also, his blood might be studied later and used to develop a possible antidote against it.

As another Killer Zombie struck at him from behind, Leon dug his spear into the ground, then vaulted over the lunging creature. He landed behind it, then stabbed the weapon into the back of its head.

With a flick of his wrist, he flung the corpse at another zombie. Without regard for its dead comrade, the mutant zombie smashed the incoming corpse with its thick fists. The dead zombie was smashed to pulp as the mutant zombie continued charging at Leon.

He gave it a dry stare, then dashed towards another Killer Zombie that was trying to be subtle. As much as he wanted to use these zombies as experiments, he wasn’t interested in being riddled with more wounds. These were already enough.

The Killer Zombie was fast, but not faster than Leon. Before it could retreat or attack, his spear already flashed, and he beheaded it. Without even bothering to remove the soul crystal, he directly caught the head and tossed it into his storage ring.

Several clawless hands reached out and grabbed Leon’s leg, causing him to flinch in alarm.

Swiftly, he slashed the spear across the mutant zombie’s grotesque limb, freeing himself from the tight hold.

Leon jumped back, landing on the corpse of a zombie. The remaining Tier One zombies all stared at him, then spread out. None moved to attack him, but they surrounded him swiftly.

Leon tried breaking out of the encirclement by targeting a particular section, but paused.

The rest of the zombie horde—the unranked ones—weren’t just at his front. During his battle against the Tier One zombies, they had moved through the alleys and streets, surrounding him completely.

Leon’s gaze darkened.

The zombie horde had completely given up on the remaining humans. It was pretty obvious now. All they wanted was him.

He shivered at the thought, then quietly looked around. The zombies were still, waiting for something—a command, maybe.

’The Zombie King...’

Leon felt it before he saw it. An oppressive weight spreading towards him. It enveloped him, making it harder for him to breathe.

His heart clenched in dread as he turned his head slowly.

Calmly stepping out from the horde was a familiar acquaintance.

Leon gritted his teeth as soon as he saw it, and he took an involuntary step back.

His memory of this particular zombie was anything but pleasant. That night, he had almost been beaten to death, and it was Marcus’s cowardice that had saved him.

’What an... ominous thing,’ He forced a smile.

The creature looked far deadlier than before. Its bone armor now had a metallic sheen, and its yellow eyes carried an intelligence comparable to that of a teenager.

Lastly, on its forehead was what Leon desperately didn’t want to see. A blue soul crystal. The Bone-Armored Zombie King had become Tier Two.

The zombie stopped a few meters away, looking at Leon silently. Then, it raised a hand and waved at him.

Leon’s expression crumbled at the mocking gesture, and a cold laugh escaped his lips.

"Good to see you again too, bony bastard."

Without waiting, he lunged at the zombie, executing a simple stab with his spear.

Clang!

The zombie caught the blade of his weapon in its palms, stopping it in place. Leon was faintly surprised by the creature’s absurd strength that matched his, but he didn’t let it distract him.

Instead of pulling back, he pressed forward with more strength, then leaned forward to deliver a sharp kick.

It connected with the zombie’s bone breastplate, pushing the creature back by a few steps.

Yanking his weapon free from the zombie’s grip, he stepped back in a hurry. Not even a full second later, bones shot up from where he had been standing, barely missing him by a few inches.

Leon’s gaze darkened, and he glared at the creature. Since when did it become something other than a brute?

As if to spite him, the creature lunged at him with a mad roar, its yellow eyes shining with... excitement?

Leon barely processed the emotion before he felt the weight of the zombie descend on him. Even before it reached him, his body was already tense.

’Oh yeah? Eat this!’

His arm blurred as he thrust the spear straight at the zombie’s head. Unhesitatingly, the creature grabbed his weapon and pushed it over its shoulder.

Barely losing speed, it crashed into Leon, driving a bone dagger into his stomach. Leon grunted as he locked eyes with the grinning zombie. Then, he spat in its eyes.

The zombie reflexively closed its eyes, giving Leon the chance to pull back and separate himself from it. He placed a hand over the wound, stopping the blood from gushing out heavily.

His body was already regenerating, and he could feel new cells forming around the old ones.

’Unfortunately, it’s no longer instant recovery,’ He though with mild annoyance.

Without wiping his spittle off its face, the zombie raised its bone dagger that came from its wrists, examining the bloodstain on the weapon.

It slowly released its absurdly long, grotesque tongue, then licked the blood. Leon shuddered in disgust at the sight, then stopped covering the wound. By now, the blood had stopped flowing, and the flesh was already knitting back together. Although slow, he would probably be fine and unscathed in a few minutes.

That was, given he didn’t get another hole punched in his body soon.

Unfortunately, he had no say in this situation. He could only face what was before him, and that...

—was the Zombie King.
