World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 188: Tactical RetreatClang! Clang! Clang!
Leon retreated with every attack of the Zombie King, barely able to keep up with its assault. He didn’t know what occupation this zombie had when it was a human, but he had no doubt that it must have been something close to a serial killer.
Each strike was insidious, forcing Leon to respond in ways it wanted. Deadly traps in the form of bone spikes shot out from the ground, preventing him from putting distance between himself and the deadly creature.
’Intelligent zombies are a menace,’ He grumbled internally.
Twisting his waist as the zombie’s punching dagger narrowly missed him, he struck the ground with his spear and vaulted over ten spikes that appeared from the ground without warning.
After a few minutes of battling the zombie, he had also gotten a read of its techniques and attack pattern. This was the flaw of any intelligent being.
It no longer attacked like a mindless creature, and was starting to use tactics. Those tactics, however, were readable, and thus, predictable.
Landing on the ground, Leon felt his left, right, and front trembling slightly.
’Bone attacks again...’
Rolling his eyes, he stepped forward, ignoring the fact that he was stepping directly onto its incoming attack.
Confusion flashed in the zombie’s yellow eyes, and it lunged at him, forced to redirect its attack.
Leon made a sweeping motion, only for him to pause mid-swing. The zombie had expected him to fully execute the sweep, and stepped forward too early.
Even though it was a Tier Two creature and its defense was clearly on another level, it failed to block the black spear.
Titanbreaker pierced into its torso, driving it back by a few steps. Seeing the black blood pouring from the edges of the wound, Leon was filled with dark glee. Instead of pulling the spear free, he pressed his advantage, pushing the spear deeper as the zombie held the shaft tightly, trying to stop him.
Leon didn’t let that happen. He controlled the shadow of his spear, letting it wrap around the weapon and, thus, completing it.
The zombie’s yellow eyes widened in astonishment as it was pierced cleanly, unable to stop the spearhead from exiting its back.
Instinctively, it released a roar that threatened to shatter Leon’s eardrums. The result was immediate.
The rest of the horde that had been standing idly finally moved, rushing forward to tear Leon apart.
’Fuck it! I thought we were having an honorable duel!’
A savage expression appeared on the zombie’s face as it held his weapon tightly, seemingly unwilling to let him pull back.
’Ah? Did you learn from Henry or something?’
Leon cursed bitterly and immediately activated Shadow Mantle. His own shadow, including the inanimate shadows in the area, wrapped around his figure, shrouding him in black.
The first three zombies to reach him were a Killer Zombie and two Mutant Zombies.
Claws and fangs sank into his cloaked figure, but barely reached him. By the time the attacks passed through the layer of shadows, they were only able to tear at his combat gear. None managed to slice his skin open.
Leon couldn’t hold back a wide grin as he took a step forward, not bothering to escape the pile of zombies rushing toward him. He wanted to kill this Zombie King today.
As he ignored the attacks being dealt to him, he saw panic flash in the Zombie King’s eyes, and it released another roar—a desperate one.
Leon’s eyes snapped up immediately, and his pupils constricted.
A whip made from the spine of an unknown creature shot at him, and he was almost struck in the head.
Crack!
The whip was stopped cleanly by a silver longsword, and the zombies surrounding him were frozen to death—shattering a moment later.
Selene landed beside him, her gaze locked on the zombie that owned the whip. It was a little girl, only a year or two older than Nora.
The zombie girl had porcelain skin and bright red eyes that made her look enchanting. Unfortunately, despite being a little girl, she was anything but weak.
Selene suppressed her trembling arm as she frowned. ’Tier Two...’
Leon’s gaze also shifted to the new zombie, and this moment of distraction allowed the Bone-Armored Zombie King to rip out his spear and escape.
Leon clicked his tongue, shooting it a glare. The situation had gotten more complicated, and he also wondered why Selene was here.
Both sides stood at a standoff, watching each other warily. The female zombie slowly raised her hand, then waved at him.
Leon shuddered at the gesture, then asked, "What’s the situation?"
Selene’s gaze remained fixed on the zombie girl as she answered, "We were ambushed by a mutated beast horde. There were no casualties, but they’re heading here soon."
Leon’s expression darkened, and a bitter feeling rose in his heart.
’It seems I can’t kill this guy today, huh...’
Giving the injured zombie one last look, he stepped back.
"We’re leaving."
The Bone-Armored Zombie King stepped forward with a growl, but the little zombie girl stopped it.
Just in time, a bestial roar resounded from the back of the zombie horde, and everyone could sense the disturbance erupting from the rear.
The Bone-Armored Zombie King roared furiously, stirring the surrounding zombies into action. Instantly, the fierce battle between the zombie horde and the beast horde began.
Leon didn’t hesitate. Tugging on Selene’s sleeve, he dashed to the left, swiftly killing the zombies on his path. The silver-haired lady followed closely behind him.
The zombies didn’t chase after them, which wasn’t surprising since they had a bigger threat to deal with. Quickly, the two humans escaped into a tall office building, climbing up to its highest floor and escaping to the rooftop.
From that height, they could clearly see the bloody battle between the two hordes. Zombies were being torn apart under the savageness of the mutated beasts, barely able to keep up with them. However, the zombies had an advantage. They were many times more than the beast horde, and therefore cared little for their fallen comrades. Zombies were mindless creatures and knew no fear.
They continued throwing themselves at the beasts, grinding down their numbers slowly but surely.
"Tsk. These guys are going to be a headache in the future," Leon whispered, shuddering at the thought of a whole country’s population turning into zombies.
"Or should I nuke them?" He tilted his head, slightly interested in the idea.
He didn’t know how much his Dark Matter skill could kill, but he believed it should be able to cripple the horde heavily.
Hearing his curious whisper, Selene’s eyes widened, and she hurriedly slapped his back.
"Stop sightseeing with dangerous ideas. Let’s get out of here."
Somewhat unhappy, Leon complied and turned around.
