World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 189: Comfy RideIt didn’t take long for the two to catch up to the convoy moving through Bushwick. With the beast horde moving out to battle the zombie horde, the neighborhood was relatively safe.
Gwen had intentionally slowed down the buses so they wouldn’t go too far until they arrived, which was a good foresight.
After noticing Selene and Leon jumping across the rooftops near them, Gwen gave the order for the buses to stop.
Finally, Leon and Selene dropped to the ground, landing firmly.
The silver-haired lady still looked as pristine as ever, but Leon was the opposite. His combat gear was in tatters, and there were a few wounds on his body that refused to close. He had severely underestimated corrupted mana, as it was stubbornly fighting against his body. It was difficult to read and adapt to, especially when the Adaptation trait was only an unranked trait.
Gwen immediately came down to observe his condition, worried.
"Hey, you..." Her eyes narrowed, and her teeth clenched slightly.
Leon held back a smile, then gestured at Fel to come over. She immediately rushed to his side, her gaze lingering on his wounds.
Selene frowned, her gaze darkening. "Zombie?"
Leon nodded, suppressing a grunt. "Don’t worry, I won’t turn. It should heal soon."
Fel stepped forward, reaching for his punctured stomach. Leon immediately stopped her, pointing at other wounds. "Not that one. Heal the others."
Although confused, the young lady nodded and began healing his other wounds. The injuries caused by the Tier One zombies had mostly been healed, and only a few stubbornly remained.
Their stubbornness was subdued when Fel’s healing ability washed over them, cleansing the wounds. In just a few seconds, Leon was as good as new, except for the small hole on the left side of his stomach.
"Why are you keeping the wound?" Selene asked, curious.
The others were just as curious, as they had gathered around him, silent.
Leon sighed and told the reason. "That’s from a Tier Two zombie. If I can heal from it by myself, then I wouldn’t have to worry about getting turned by anything below Tier Three."
Selene, Gwen, and the others couldn’t hide their astonishment at his words, and realized why he didn’t allow Fel to try healing the wound. If she did, she would be clearing the infection away. But if Leon’s body healed naturally, then he wouldn’t have to worry about it again.
"Hey, isn’t it painful keeping it that way?" Reymond asked, concern audible in his voice.
Leon glanced at him, then chuckled dryly. "Of course, it is. Damn, it feels itchy as hell."
Sighing, Gwen clapped twice. "Alright, we should get moving. We’re not even halfway through our journey."
No one argued with her, and they all returned to the buses. By default, Leon ended up sitting with Gwen and Fel who insisted on being by his side in case he needed her healing.
Reclining in the comfortable seat, Leon quietly enjoyed the smooth ride for a few minutes before he opened his eyes suspiciously.
"Is there something on my face?" He asked, glancing at Fel.
The brown-haired lady shook her head and looked away. "No, I just thought you look pale."
"Oh..." Leon blinked, then fell silent. His face was indeed pale, because of the pain he was going through. As much as he would have liked to scoff and say the pain barely affected him, he couldn’t.
The corrupted mana from a Tier Two zombie was on a different level, and the way it kept eating at him was insane. He was barely keeping his condition from deteriorating.
Suppressing the trembling in his lips, he turned to Gwen and asked, "Does anyone have a Basic Trait Upgrade Card?"
Her brows furrowed, and suddenly, her eyes brightened.
"Yes! Richard said he got one a few days ago. Apparently, he was keeping it for you to check."
Leon sighed in relief, then sent Fel to bring Richard over. The young man appeared quickly, a serious expression on his face.
"Boss?"
"You have a Basic Trait Upgrade Card with you?" Leon asked.
The guy nodded, then rummaged through his backpack. Soon, he took out the card and handed it to Leon, letting him check.
Leon confirmed that it was indeed the one, and shot him a glance. "Remind me that I owe you a Tier One ability scroll."
"Yosh!" Richard’s eyes brightened, and he soon returned to his seat where he could observe his two tamed beasts.
Gwen and Fel watched Leon quietly as he used the card. They could tell that he was evolving a particular trait, but they didn’t know what trait it was. And although they were curious, it felt rude to ask.
Ignoring their stares, Leon opened his eyes and read the description of the trait again.
[Trait: Tier One Adaptation - The user’s body instinctively records and analyzes external stimuli, injuries, and harmful influences. Repeated exposure allows the body to gradually adapt, reducing the effectiveness of the same threat over time.]
His eyes narrowed when he saw no change in the description. However, he wasn’t discouraged. The practical effect was immediate, as he could feel the corrupted mana ravaging through his system get restricted.
His Adaptation trait had grown stronger, and could now contend against the corrupted mana. Hopefully, in a few hours, he would fully conquer it.
Fel sensed his condition turn better, and guessed he had evolved a healing trait. She smiled slightly, relieved in her heart.
Finally feeling better as the pain dulled, Leon closed his eyes and relaxed. Sensing the change in his breathing, Gwen and Fel glanced at each other.
A hint of mischief flashed in their eyes, and Fel nudged him slightly. Leon’s body shifted, and he ended up leaning against Gwen’s shoulder, sound asleep—or so they thought.
Leon struggled to stop his lips from twitching, astounded by Fel’s mischievousness. That shy girl was setting him up now?
Still, he didn’t complain. Pretending to be asleep, he let himself enjoy the warmth of Gwen’s body while the ride continued.
Several hours later, he was stirred awake when he felt the buses stop.
’Oh, I actually fell asleep... wait, what?’
Leon’s eyes slowly opened.
"...?"
Instead of seeing the seat in front of him, his vision was filled by something massive that completely blocked his line of sight.
He blinked once before his drowsy mind finally caught up. His head was resting on Gwen’s lap, and her chest hovered directly above him, obscuring most of his view.
’...Ah, damnation.’
