World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 197: An Elite LegionLeon and Gwen returned to the villa and found no one except Marie in the living room. The auburn-haired woman was scrolling through her phone, checking out old pictures she had on the device.
"Hello, Marie," Gwen greeted with a sweet smile, walking over to give her a light hug.
"You look tired," Marie smiled back, her gaze soft.
Hearing this, Gwen smiled bitterly, then turned to Leon. "Let’s have dinner together?"
Leon paused and considered it. It was already late in the night and he was already prepared to sleep without eating. However, Gwen’s words stopped him.
Besides...
"I also haven’t eaten yet. Let’s go," Marie added, already walking towards the dining hall.
Leon shrugged and followed behind the two women. Aside from eating, he also wanted to hear reports about Marie’s expedition today.
The three of them sat at the table and signalled for a maid to bring the dishes.
"So, how was it?" He asked, looking at Marie.
The young woman folded her arms and replied seriously, "We managed to go deep into the forest, but not too deep. Hunted six Tier One mutated beasts, and I managed to bring the weakest evolvers to Level 16."
"Level 16..." Leon mentally processed it, his eyes narrowed.
That was quite productive considering this was only done within a single day. If repeated four more times, then it was possible to bring all the evolvers to Level 25 by the end of the week.
"Good," He smiled, giving her a thumbs-up.
Marie smiled back, then turned as the maids began to serve them dinner. Once the table was set, they retreated to the sidelines.
The conversation continued. Gwen looked at Marie, then asked curiously.
"Did you notice anyone noteworthy among those evolvers?"
Marie blinked, pausing her spoon on the plate. After a few seconds of thought, she nodded.
"Yeah. There are exceptional fighters among them, and some even have top-tier abilities."
Gwen smiled, her fingers crossed as a plan formed in her mind.
"Why do you ask?" Leon inquired, sensing that it wasn’t just a random question.
Turning to him with a beautiful smile, Gwen explained, "You see, I was thinking that if we’re going to do this, we should do it right."
"Do what right?" Leon frowned, further confused.
"Kingdom-building!" Gwen clapped, her brown eyes sparkling.
"Huh?" Leon and Marie echoed.
"Let me ask a question," Gwen said, her lips curving in a smirk. "Do you think if the government reforms and asks you to hand over the control of this camp, you would agree?"
A small frown appeared on Leon’s face as he thought about it.
"No, I wouldn’t. This was something I built with my own hands—hijacked actually—but that doesn’t matter."
He rolled his eyes.
"Anyway, this place is now my responsibility, and I don’t think the world can be like the peaceful times again. Besides, I’d rather control my own fate than have someone control me."
After learning about the Constellations and the other parts of the universe from Thyra, Leon was fully convinced to have his own camp or survivor base.
The apocalypse hadn’t ended, and it had only just begun. Some things couldn’t be dealt with alone, and a person would need an army to face it.
"I agree with Leon. Where is the government right now? Probably hiding and trying to protect themselves. If they come out and say some bullshit, I’ll be ready to knock a few heads," Marie said bluntly, a displeased scowl on her lips.
Seeing their reactions, Gwen’s smirk widened. "Exactly what I’m saying. Since we’re going to defy the government, let’s fully commit to it and build our own kingdom!"
Leon almost choked. Was she serious right now? A kingdom? Even though he indeed wanted to have an independent force, he didn’t let his imagination widen to the point of having a kingdom.
Still, he didn’t rebuke her idea. Although a little childish, Gwen was far wiser than most of the people around him, and her ideas always made sense.
"Well, we’ll see how it goes from here," He said, his voice calm. "We might have to annex some other camps in the process, but that’s for the future."
Gwen nodded, feeling relieved that he didn’t reject her thoughts.
"That said... how does this relate with the question you asked Marie?"
Instantly, her eyes sharpened, and she became serious.
"We already have a general evolver army with the recruited armed personnel. However, you need something private—a separate army. Cream of the crop, if you get what I’m saying."
Leon leaned forward, listening attentively. Even Marie was interested.
Having caught their attention, Gwen continued. "They’ll be the elite legion that answer only to you. Now you might want to ask me what would make them any different. This is it."
She shifted her plates aside, placing an elbow on the table as she raised a finger.
"After stabilizing this camp, we’re heading to Jersey City, right? We obviously can’t bring the whole camp with us, and we can’t take all of our evolvers with us either. Manhattan already taught us a lesson that we need an army wherever we’re going. So, my idea is to create a separate army, then bring them with us on the journey. The rest can stay behind and defend the camp while we go rescue our family members."
The dining hall fell silent, and Leon slowly looked away from Gwen’s face. Her words were true, and he realized he had indeed been quite naive.
’If I simply bring my small group to reach Jersey City, we might face another zombie horde that’ll force us to flee.’
However, with an army, there was always a chance.
"That’s a brilliant idea, Gwen," Marie exclaimed softly, her eyes blazing with admiration as she looked at Gwen with a grin. "Without you, I don’t really know how Leon would pull all this off."
Leon conveniently ignored her words while Gwen blushed but said nothing.
"You’re right. That’s not a bad idea," He said after a short moment of silence. "We’ll be working on that, then. Marie, please note down every exceptional evolver during your expeditions. I’ll be going through their details personally, and we can plan it properly next week."
Marie nodded. She lightly smacked her forehead, then said to him.
"I forgot to tell you. All the rewards from today’s hunt remain untouched, and I’ve ensured everything is stored in the warehouse properly. Tomorrow, you can come with me to check them."
Unexpectedly, Leon shook his head. "You can do that yourself. The most important ones should be the Tier One abilities and traits, Tier One treasure cubes, and the Ability/Trait Upgrade Cards. As for the rest, you can share them as you deem fit. I trust you with that."
Marie’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, and she quietly wondered.
’Does he really trust me with that, or he’s just being lazy and wants to avoid responsibility?’
Not wanting to get caught, Leon kept his expression straight, then began eating. After a few seconds, Marie’s suspicion disappeared, and she began eating too.
As Leon ate in silence, only one thought occupied his mind. If he wanted to reach Jersey City alive, he wouldn’t be doing it with a handful of companions anymore. He would march with an army.
