Chapter 200: Escalating Danger [75 PS Bonus Chapter (1)]

After storing the bodies of the wolves and the rewards in his storage ring, the little group continued their journey. Fel had already tended to Nora’s tiny wound, causing the girl to beam occasionally.

"Where exactly are the two creatures?" Leon asked, glancing at Agnus.

The young man had a serious expression on his face, his pink eyes narrowed.

"At the heart of the Vine Forest," He said. "It’s a little bit early to call it a forest, but it’s definitely not your ordinary group of trees."

Leon hummed quietly, looking into the distance. There, they could all see a cluster of trees that had vines crawling all over them.

’Looks ominous enough,’ Leon thought, keeping his spear with him as they walked towards the little forest.

As the group moved closer, they tensed involuntarily, feeling the pressure of danger nearby.

"Be watchful," Leon said to them, moving a step ahead of the others.

Soon, they entered into the little forest, surrounded by towering trees, overgrown plants, and waist-high grasses.

Nora looked at a large flower with starry eyes, then frowned. "Aunt Cassie, those... flowers look a bit wrong."

Her quiet words caught everyone’s attention, and they all turned to the flowers decorating the surroundings.

Leon’s eyes narrowed, and he moved.

Sensing that their covers had been blown, the flowers surged to life. The petals suddenly opened, revealing a gigantic mouth lined with rows of thorn-like teeth.

The stems leaned forward at shocking speed, aiming straight for the little girl.

Bang!

Leon’s spear stabbed into the flower and knocked it to the ground before it could reach her, his eyes flashing with anger.

Twisting the shaft of the weapon, he pressed it deeper into the flower, then used it to rip the plant apart.

[You have slain a Level 12 Mutated Man-Eater Flower!]

[You cannot...]

Leon’s eyes narrowed. ’Only Level 12... yet this fast?’

His expression hardened, and he turned to see the other flowers surging towards him with their stems stretched.

Leon responded with a sweep of his spear, beheading (deflowering?) them all at once. Thankfully, they weren’t that strong—only fast.

However, Leon had a feeling that things could turn ugly if they successfully caught a person with those thorn-like teeth.

The little forest once again grew quiet after the dangerous flowers were killed. Leon rested the spear by his side, a small frown on his lips.

"Agnus, do you sense something?" He asked, casting a glance at the young man who had a grim expression on his face.

"Yes," Agnus nodded, his jaw tight. "Most of the plants in this forest have awakened slight consciousness. We’re going to be attacked from all sides."

Leon’s lips twitched, and he looked around them—green. So many plants. He wasn’t used to fighting mutated plants, as the only one that had ever fought back was the Vicious Vine on the Williamsburg Bridge.

’In that case...’

Just as he was about to call for a retreat, the forest shook from a loud, bestial bellow.

The deafening bellow thundered across Marine Park. Marsh water exploded into ripples, trees shed their leaves, and every mutated beast within several kilometers froze in fear.

Leon’s eyes flashed with surprise, and he didn’t pause for a second. "We’re getting out of here."

Although he had been confident in knocking down two weakened Tier Two creatures, the danger of the forest, along with the burden of ensuring the others would be safe, wouldn’t help him.

He was confident, but not overconfident. The instant he sensed things going wrong, he called for a retreat.

Agnus stood frozen, staring into the core of the forest with wide eyes.

"I see it... the tree. It’s... snapping its life force. A tree like that. A..."

Leon whacked him across the neck, snapping him out of the frozen state. Then, he asked.

"What are you mumbling?"

Agnus’s eyes turned white for a moment. "The tree. It has eaten the vine. Now, it will eat the crocodile. Marine Park would become one vast forest controlled by one sentient being."

After saying this, the young man’s expression grew slack, and he fainted. Leon immediately caught him, then passed him to Fel.

"You guys should leave now. I’ll go check if the problem can be solved."

Cassie frowned and wanted to argue, but held herself back. ’I’m still not strong enough.’

Leon noticed the struggle in her eyes and gave her a gentle head pat. "Go on, wait for me at the parking hideout."

She nodded, then carried Nora. Fel also carried Agnus, and they rushed back.

Now alone, Leon’s smile disappeared, and he bolted deeper into the forest. Reaching the core proved to be a hassle.

He had barely moved thirty meters when he was suddenly attacked. Vines shot out from the ground and stabbed at him, their pointed tips glinting like needles.

Leon expertly twisted his body, evading a few while deflecting the others with his spear.

Some vines were shredded, while others leaned back slightly, preparing to attack again.

Leon’s eyes narrowed, and he tried to check for the source of the vines, only to find nothing.

’I’ll have to cut them down by myself, then.’

He moved before they did, spinning swiftly as the tip of his blade sliced through the thick vines. They were much harder than what normal farm tools could cut, but vulnerable to a Tier Two weapon.

In less than a minute, he had finished shredding all the vines around him. Without delay, he continued his journey, only to be stopped once again. This time, he wasn’t attacked by vines, but by a different kind of flowering plants.

These ones didn’t have thorn-like teeth. Instead, they had two mouths at the center—one for devouring, the other for shooting.

’Shooting what?’

Leon received the answer almost as soon as he saw them.

Pew! Pew! Pew!

Three black seeds the size of coconuts flew towards him, and Leon instinctively jumped back, creating distance.

The black seeds landed with dull, heavy thuds. Fine cracks spread across their shells as an eerie crimson glow leaked through them. Then—

BOOOM!
