The next morning, Leon’s eyes cracked open to see sunlight filtering into the room. He didn’t know when, but at some point, he had turned around and lay on his back, with the mother-daughter pair on each side of him.

’How familiar...’

He glanced at Nora who was still sleeping soundly, and smiled. The girl had a smile on her face, which probably meant she was having a good dream.

Then, Leon turned to Marie. His smile slowly faded, and a hesitant look appeared in his eyes. His relationship with this woman was currently a bit strained.

He noticed her growing attraction towards him, and wanted to reduce it to avoid any complications. Still, it wasn’t like he could just start acting coldly with her.

Besides, Nora was another factor. Before, she had merely been a leash he could use to have full control over Marie. Now, however, he had inexplicably become attached to her. There was also Gwen who was undeniably in love with him. Although she hadn’t said any words of confession, even someone as dense as Miguel would notice.

Coupled with everything else weighing on him, Leon felt a little tired.

’In the end, I’m just a normal human... right?’

He raised a hand and gently stroked Marie’s hair.

’Well, I’ll simply focus on what’s important for now. When there’s peace, we can find a way to solve everyone’s problem.’

He closed his eyes and went back to sleep. After all, he still felt the need for more rest.

The meeting could wait.

......

Meanwhile, Gwen had already gathered all the camp officials and Evolvers holding leadership positions in the designated meeting hall.

It was a huge hall with a long conference table and floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed plenty of natural light inside.

Most of the officials had already arrived even an hour before the meeting, and were waiting patiently.

One by one, the members of the main group began to arrive. Richard arrived first, followed by Cassie and Fel. Miguel and Reymond came next. Thereafter, Selene and Gwen entered the meeting hall.

Everyone immediately fell silent, gazing at the two women with respect. Almost all of them recognized the two women.

Selene was well known because she had been the one handling the camp’s management with Nicolas before Gwen arrived. Also, they were well aware that she was the second strongest in the camp, only below the leader.

Gwen was different. Her strength wasn’t known, but everyone respected her because of her charisma. She knew how to socialize with people, and the way she spoke to people regardless of their status made them like her.

After the two women took their seats, everyone waited quietly. A few minutes before the meeting started, Marie walked in and took her seat beside her female colleagues.

Gwen immediately looked at her and asked, "Where’s Leon?"

Marie’s lips twitched, and she looked embarrassed. "He... is still sleeping."

"Huh?" Gwen blinked in surprise, then reflexively checked her wrist watch. This was almost eleven o’clock.

’He’s probably very exhausted from all the work he had been doing.’

She nodded to herself, then said. "Let’s allow him to rest properly. He should be here in half an hour."

No one said anything. The members of the main group weren’t really bothered, and none of the other officials could complain. They didn’t want to cause trouble for themselves.

Just like that, the meeting didn’t start. An hour passed, then another. By now, expressions of displeasure had appeared on the faces of most officials, and even the members of the main group were frowning.

This was... too much.

’Shouldn’t he be punctual? He’s the leader...’ Gwen sighed in her heart, suppressing the urge to facepalm.

"I’ll go wake him."

Suddenly, Selene spoke and stood up. Reymond’s head whipped towards her, and he opened his mouth... then closed it. Anything he said would probably sound foolish.

Gwen was also a little surprised, but nodded.

Without waiting, Selene walked out of the hall and headed back to the villa.

Not even ten minutes later, the doors opened again, and they walked in. Selene had her usual indifferent expression, but Leon looked mildly displeased and sleepy.

Despite his lateness, no one complained about it. Not that they didn’t want to complain, but because something else drew their attention.

Everyone present was wearing formal clothing, not a single exception.

Well, Leon was an exception. Instead of formal attire, he was clad in his dark blue pajamas, and he was walking barefooted.

"You..." Gwen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The situation suddenly felt like those old romance stories she read.

In situations where a family meeting would be called and the bastard son of the noble family would appear totally unserious.

It felt oddly similar.

Leon’s eyes swept over everyone, then he blinked. The sleepy expression on his face vanished, and he looked around calmly.

"Oh, it seems I’ve caused some inconvenience."

He said casually, covering his mouth as he yawned.

Then, he walked over and took his seat at the head of the table. Selene also returned to her seat, settling into the chair.

He tapped his finger against the table, ringing a clear sound in the silence. A sound that signified the start of an important meeting.

"For the sake of those who don’t know me well, I am Leonel Wayne, the leader of this survivor camp."

He paused, then continued after a few seconds of silence.

"I know we all had lives before we found ourselves where we are today. Some of you were politicians, doctors, teachers, engineers, farmers, or even jobless. Those are merely your social statuses. In the end, we’re all humans, and that’s what brings us together."

He tapped the table twice, his voice clear as he spoke.

"I believe we’ve all realized it by now, but the old world order is gone. Even if it can be restored, it can never be what it once was. Here, we only have ourselves to rely on. Our lives aren’t in the hands of politicians, but in our own hands. You decide what you do. Which is why..."

He leaned back, resting against the chair.

"... I have decided to make this camp into an independent city."

The room froze, and the officials stared at him in disbelief.

Leon ignored them all, completing the final part of his statement.

"The Eternal Night City."
