World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 225: Insects Are The WorstThe Mutated Forest was thick with mutated trees and overgrown weeds that crawled over them. If anyone from two months ago had entered this forest, they would have been terrified.
However, to Evolvers, this was nothing strange.
’Still, I’m glad that they haven’t gained consciousness like that Mutated Sapping Tree.’
Leon pushed aside a wild branch as he led the team around, then paused. Something was wrong.
"You’re sensing it too?" He asked, turning to Cassie who had a frown on her face too.
The young lady nodded, her sharp blue eyes scanning their surroundings with caution.
Leon was momentarily distracted by her eyes, but he quickly refocused on their surroundings.
"I don’t sense anything, though," Richard spoke, folding his arms as he leisurely glanced around.
Still, Leon didn’t give the order to move. He glanced at the crocodile, noticing that it was tense too.
’Something is watching us... but what?’
He looked around warily, then shrugged. "Maybe I’m being too parano—"
He suddenly turned around and threw his spear straight at Fel.
The young lady’s eyes widened in fear, her instincts screaming at her to dodge. However, she didn’t.
Puchi!
Before the spear reached her, it pierced something else, and the space before her distorted.
Her eyes widened even more, staring at the abomination standing tall above her. It was a mutated praying mantis, its sharp scythes reaching for her head.
However, Leon’s spear had struck its shoulder, and it immediately pulled away from her.
With a furious screech, it shook off his spear and dashed away, slipping into hiding once again.
Leon heaved a sigh of relief and rushed over to Fel.
"Are you alright?"
He asked, holding her face in his hands. He felt a flicker of fear, as he had almost lost his precious subordinate just like that.
If it hadn’t been for his Divine Premonition trait, he wouldn’t even know what had attacked.
Fel nodded shakily, fear still in her eyes.
Leon’s heart turned cold, and he turned away to pick up his spear.
"Invisibility..."
He growled, realizing he couldn’t sense the loathsome creature again.
"It’s still around," Cassie said to him. "I still feel uneasy."
Leon nodded, trying his best to locate the creature. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do so with his mortal senses.
Closing his eyes, he switched to Shadow Sense and observed their surroundings through it.
It was chaotic, with the thousands of shadows to observe. There were shadows of leaves, of tall grass blades, and even shadows of mutated birds flying over the trees.
He was tempted to stop, as it felt like his mind was being overwhelmed by too many details. However, the cold fury in his heart refused to let him do so.
He persisted, checking every shadow until he realized it was futile.
’If it’s currently invisible, it wouldn’t even have a shadow, damn it!’
His jaw clenched hard, and he opened his eyes again.
He turned and noticed Cassie looking up at the branches of a tree next to them, her brows furrowed.
It seemed she had sensed something, but was unsure.
Leon didn’t hesitate, though. Without even asking her what she had seen, he abruptly shot up, striking his spear at ’empty air’.
Clang!
Hearing that metallic screech, his eyes sharpened.
’There you are!’
The mantis’s Invisibility was distorted, revealing its body perched between two large branches where it had been watching their group.
The instant its cover was blown, it pulled back, slipping away from sight again.
However, Leon wasn’t letting it off that easily. He followed the distortions in the air, attacking the mantis again.
The large insect was once again forced to reveal itself as it blocked his attack with its scythes, stopping on a tree with its sharp, sturdy legs.
Leon growled and pushed himself off the opposite tree, shooting straight at it.
This time, the mantis didn’t try to run, but attacked him. It sprang forward to meet him, its long scythes elongated with the goal of cleaving him in a single snap.
It failed.
Knowing his spear wouldn’t reach it first because of the insect’s longer reach, Leon changed his target.
He stabbed at the scythes instead, blocking them and using them as leverage to flip over the mutated insect.
He landed on its back, using his weight to force it to the ground.
Boom!
The two landed, raising a small cloud of dust, and separated.
The mutated mantis stared at Leon with its large black eyes, then stepped back. Before it could go invisible again, Leon teleported over to its shadow and punched its head.
Bang!
His fist connected with the target cleanly, jerking it to the side. Dazed, its ability got cancelled, and it failed to escape in time. Still, Leon didn’t stop.
He stabbed forward with his spear, targeting its injured arm. At the same time, the insect turned, striking at him with its other scythe.
Leon’s eyes narrowed, and he couldn’t help but sneer. If he dodged, that would mean abandoning his attack and giving it a chance to escape.
’Hell no!’
With eyes burning with fervor, he committed to his attack. When the scythe was almost upon him, he turned slightly, letting it merely graze his shoulder.
Still, the scythe was sharper than he thought. It easily tore through his flesh, even cutting deeply into his shoulder blade.
Leon endured the pain and pushed forward. Augmented by its shadow, force, and momentum, the Titanbreaker Spear pierced into the injured joint and destroyed the arm.
The mutated mantis screeched as it reeled in pain, staring at its amputated scythe lying on the ground.
Leon grinned, his gaze full of dark glee as he looked at it. Although his own left shoulder was injured, it was far better than the mantis’s current situation.
He felt blood flowing from his shoulder, but didn’t care.
"You’ll die today."
After losing an arm, the mutated mantis was furious. However, instead of suddenly going ballistic on him, it actually turned and ran.
Leon immediately shot after it, but someone was faster.
Cassie suddenly materialized out of thin air, appearing in its path. Holding Miguel’s oversized hammer, she swung it at the insect with strength unexpected from someone of her petite build.
BOOM!
