Chapter 243: Bayonne’s Issue [100 PS Bonus Chapter (2)]

The family spent several minutes hugging each other and shedding tears of joy. In the end, Cassie couldn’t hold back the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

Her family had been her ultimate motivation to strive and survive. Meeting them was literally a dream come true.

After a while, they separated, with Ava still cradling Cassie’s face in her hands like she couldn’t believe it.

"My daughter is finally back home," She said with a heartwarming smile.

Cassie smiled back, nodding.

Then, she turned back to Leon and bowed a full ninety degrees.

"Thank you, Boss."

"Eh?" He blinked, stunned. Surely, that wasn’t part of the script, right? Wasn’t it meant to be a family reunion? Why was she turning to him now?

Cassie knew he was confused, so she explained while remaining in that same position.

"If you had never spoken to us at the field house that day, I might have been left behind at that police camp with the others, further lowering my chance of ever seeing my family again."

She paused, forcing her voice to remain steady.

"There are times when you’ve personally risked your safety to come save me, and I remember each one. I promise to pay you back, just like I promised that day I agreed to become your subordinate."

Her family looked at her with varying emotions, with surprise being the common one.

Mark shifted his gaze from her to Leon, quietly realizing that his daughter was deeply devoted to this young man.

’Hmm...’

Ava was curious about Leon, wondering what was so impressive about him. She hadn’t thought her reclusive daughter could ever say words of gratitude like that to anyone outside the family.

Sean was a little puzzled, though. He barely understood what his sister was saying, but he was faintly displeased when he realized she was someone else’s subordinate.

’Anyway, we’re back together now and we’re never separating again!’

Leon stared silently for about ten seconds, then spoke in a calm voice.

"Rise."

Cassie stood straight, her blue eyes fixed on him. The two locked gazes, and a silent understanding passed between them.

Leon smiled and said, "I’m happy you’ve finally found your family again."

Mark came down the stairs and bowed to Leon. "Young man, thank you for protecting my daughter."

Leon was stunned, but quickly shot up and helped the man rise.

"No, you shouldn’t do that. You’re old enough to be my own father. I definitely can’t accept that."

He smiled and patted Mark’s shoulder. "You don’t need to thank me. I was only doing what I could for everyone at the university."

Behind him, Gwen and Reymond looked at each other in shock. Was he seriously playing the righteous guy now?

They could vividly remember how cold Leon was in the past, and how he barely cared about the others outside his little group.

’He has grown...’ Reymond thought with a smile.

Ava also turned to Leon and smiled. "We appreciate you taking care of our daughter. Thank you very much."

Leon gave her a polite nod and a smile, then turned to Mark.

"I’m sorry to take part of your reunion time, but I’d like to know a few things about the camp and Bayonne in general."

Mark nodded and glanced at his wife. Catching the hint, Ava turned to Cassie and pulled her hand.

"Come check the room I prepared for you. I’m sure you’ll like it."

Sean also followed them, but not after casting one look of admiration at Gwen. If anyone were paying attention to him, they would have instantly noticed that he had fallen in love—at first sight.

Mark sat down beside his squad members, facing Leon’s group with a serious expression.

"So, what do you wish to know?"

Leon went straight to the point. "Is the leadership here good, and are you satisfied with it?"

Mark blinked, surprised. He hadn’t expected Leon to be that direct.

He nodded and answered, "The leader is a good woman. She has a political background, so she’s very skilled at managing the camp. Honestly, this place is only as safe as it is due to her effort."

He wanted to add that she was strong too, but remembering the lineup of Leon’s team, he remained silent about that. He didn’t think Leon would be the kind to cause trouble anyway.

The young man nodded, relaxing. "That’s good then. I was wondering if it’s someone corrupt or something. With that out of the way, do you know the fastest route to Jersey City?"

The others from his group immediately became interested in the conversation, leaning forward to hear Mark’s answer.

The middle-aged man frowned. "Jersey City? That place is currently a death zone. Hundreds of thousands of zombies are over there, and they even have a Zombie King and some other dangerous beasts. There are probably no humans left in that place."

Leon was already expecting this, as he had received the report from Gwen earlier.

"I’m aware of that, but we have to pass through. Or at least, we need to find a way to reach Newark."

Eric opened his mouth in surprise. "Newark is your target? You’re heading to the government camp there?"

Leon nodded. "Hm, we have business there."

Mark sighed. "If you really want to reach Newark, your only choice is Jersey City. The Newark Bay Bridge has been destroyed by some aquatic mutated beast, so it can’t be crossed."

Leon was a little surprised. "Did this camp try moving to Newark too?"

"Yes," Mark admitted. "This city isn’t as safe as it looks like, and we have our own issues too. It’s enough to frustrate our leader and make her think of moving us to the Newark camp, but that’s impossible."

Leon nodded slowly, then glanced at Gwen as she spoke.

"What problems exactly are you facing?"

Smiling bitterly, Mark replied. "My mother and her horde of zombies."

The atmosphere in the room froze, and Leon’s group looked at Mark in disbelief. Earlier, they had thought Cassie’s grandmother was just a normal zombie already restrained by Mark.

Never did they expect that she would actually be a boss in the game.

’Damn, this is a different kind of problem...’ Miguel thought with a grim expression.

Zombie or not, no one wanted to kill Cassie’s grandmother.
