World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 290: Memories Of A BeastLeon raised his brows. "That fast? I thought you’d need to kill a dozen beasts or something."
"Yes. It would have been that." She nodded. "Or by killing a Tier Three creature."
Leon’s lips twitched. "That’s pretty lax. At least the requirements allowed you to get help."
Selene said nothing, merely looking towards the entrance. After a while, she asked, "I really can’t leave yet?"
Leon shook his head. "That crack will probably only open once I’ve completed my own requirement."
A defeated sigh escaped her, and she stood up, walking deeper into the cave. "Guard me for a full day. I’m going to evolve now."
Leon looked at her, then turned away. "Alright."
He felt a bit relieved. Once she evolved into Tier Two, she would become a stronger ally.
And on an uncharted planet like this, any power boost was welcome.
’Who knows? Maybe I’ll find a tree filled with mana fruits.’
Shaking his head at the thought, he noticed that the sky outside was already darkening.
Hesitant to put out the bonfire, he settled for something else. A wall of darkness covered the entrance of the cave, blocking the light inside from reaching outside.
The wall wasn’t for defense by any means, and any creature could easily pass through. However, its purpose was already fulfilled.
Resting his back against the wall, he turned his head and looked at Selene’s unconscious figure. She simply lay there on the ground, completely defenseless.
’She trusts me that much?’
He turned away from her and stared at the bonfire. It was still burning and would probably take a few hours before it went out. Then the whole cave would be filled with darkness.
’Peaceful, comforting darkness.’
Shifting his focus from that, he brought up his evolution requirements interface.
[Evolution Requirements to Tier Two]
[1. Survive an encounter with a Tier Three creature and make it acknowledge you as a predator (1/1)]
[2. Gain the loyalty of a thousand willing Evolvers under your banner (541/1000)]
[3. Retrieve the Heart of a Dying World. Time Limit: 6 months]
[4. Remember a Fragment of Darkness. Progress: 12%]
Looking at the changes, he felt a flicker of surprise. The first requirement had been completed, which didn’t surprise him. The second one was also steadily increasing as a result of the existence of the Eternal Night City.
He was here in this dying world for the third one. However, the last requirement still puzzled him. What surprised him even more was that the progress had actually increased.
’When did I remember something related to darkness?’
He had a hunch, though. Perhaps it was related to the dreams he had been having lately. Still, he couldn’t confirm his hypothesis yet.
’One out of four. Yay. Tier Two, here I come,’ He thought flatly.
Pulling out the memory orb from his storage ring, he hesitated.
He had only ever consumed human memories. He didn’t know what the memories of a non-human creature would be like.
Still, he consumed it. It was necessary, after all. Without knowledge of the situation of the planet, he was bound to suffer—with Selene.
The orb left a weird taste in his mouth, but before he could dwell on it, the memories came flooding in.
They were messy, fragmented, but utterly clear.
He remembered hatching from an ugly egg, breaking through the shell and stepping outside along with his siblings who bore the same insect-like features as him.
He remembered seeing the towering figure of his mother who had laid all their eggs. He was filled with awe... and terror.
Their mother was terrifying. A Tier Three creature with unfathomable strength. She easily decimated any creature that came too close to their cave.
No matter where she went, bringing her children with her, no creature survived meeting her. She would kill them and feed them to her young ones.
He remembered tearing into flesh, snapping bone with his sharp mandibles and eating voraciously. It was an interesting childhood. Soon, however, it all came to an end.
He and his siblings matured, and they set out on their own. They no longer moved in groups, following after their mother for protection.
Now, they were powerful Tier One creatures who could survive on their own—as long as they didn’t encounter anything terrifying, at least.
He remembered them returning home to their mother every day. Then, their numbers began to reduce. Perhaps some had wandered too far and lost their way.
Perhaps they had been unfortunate and met a stronger creature that killed them.
He wasn’t sure.
At some point, he realized he was the only one left alive. He still went to meet his mother in her cave every day. Sadly, the great Tier Three creature had lost most of her strength.
Several battles over the years had worn her out, and she could no longer retain her former glory.
He was still alive and healthy, though. Unlike his siblings who were dead. Unlike his mother who was injured.
It wasn’t that he was lucky. Quite the opposite, actually. He had encountered several strong beasts and the highly intelligent lifeforms of the planet—Vaelari.
They had almost killed him, but they couldn’t. He had managed to kill them all. He had survived through grit, determination, and the correct use of the ability he had gained.
He grew stronger the more he killed, eventually becoming Tier Three himself.
He remembered coming back home and finding his mother’s shredded corpse in the cave. He hadn’t felt anything in particular. After all, he wasn’t highly intelligent. He only felt a flicker of grief before he devoured her remains, letting her rest within him.
Ever since then, his life became a bitter struggle—especially with the appearance of parasites. He watched the beasts populating the forest get taken over.
He killed many of them, crushing their skulls beneath his powerful legs. He had felt disdain and disgust... until he was infected too.
The parasite was a revolting thing. He had gotten careless while killing the host, and it had slipped into his body.
There was nothing he could do about it. Thankfully, he was strong enough to resist its attempt to control him.
He resisted for years, but his mind was starting to wear out. He began to kill senselessly, knowing it would do nothing to stop the thing trying to kill him from the inside.
His life became a torment, as there was no creature strong enough to kill him.
That was... until he met two weak aliens.
