World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability

Leon’s eyes widened in horror as he felt the wind rushing past him.

They were falling toward the ground below. He fought through the pain of the soul attack and regained mobility.

His thoughts became a speeding blur. He had no abilities that supported flight, and there were no shadows around him. Even if there was, he hadn’t recovered enough mana to use any ability.

’If we land on the ground, we’ll both get flattened into paste.’

He grabbed one of Selene’s hands, then snapped the ropes binding her to him. She almost fell off, but he pulled her back, positioning her above him.

He managed to turn his head and looked below them.

’So we’re falling towards the river...’

He felt a little relieved, and hoped that the river was deep enough to cushion their fall.

Splash!

With a violent upthrust of water accompanying their landing, Leon sank into the water with Selene. Their speed only slowed slightly, and their momentum made them go deeper.

His eyes were wide open, and he scanned their surroundings for any sign of danger. Even in water, he wasn’t relaxed at all.

After all, a parasitized fish could suddenly show up and swallow them.

After a while, their speed slowed, and they no longer sank. Holding the unconscious woman close by her waist, he paddled with his other hand and tried to swim upward.

It barely worked. The pressure was suffocating, and he doubted that an ordinary person could survive in this water for long.

Persevering, he struggled upward some more, only to start feeling something else.

’The currents...’ He thought.

They were being pushed downstream, and they were powerless to resist.

’Curses... if only I had a water-related ability, I might have been able to do something.’

Sadly, only Selene had such a class, and she was currently unconscious.

With nothing to do to resist the currents, he simply held her tightly so they wouldn’t be separated by the raging waters. They kept flowing with the water, slowly rising to the surface.

It felt a little strange that they hadn’t encountered any aquatic creature. However, Leon was more than satisfied with that.

He was at his wit’s end already. Any more pressure and he might collapse.

At some point, their heads broke the surface, and he took a deep breath to refill his lungs. Glancing around, he saw that they were still beside the ridiculously tall mountain which they had fallen from.

His expression sharpened, and he began swimming again. He didn’t resist the currents, but swam towards the right. He barely made progress, but the small movements accumulated, and he finally managed to grab a stone by the shore.

Holding onto it tightly, he forced himself out of the water. Shivering from the cold, he looked around.

There was only one cave before them, and it seemed he needed to climb before reaching it. Groaning, he dragged himself towards it and jumped.

He managed to land at the edge and stumbled inside. To his surprise, there was a makeshift bed made from leaves that looked like banana leaves and some soft vines underneath.

He laid Selene on the bed, then looked at her.

She was soaking wet, and so was he.

A change of clothes wasn’t a problem, but whether he could change her clothes. The idea of stripping someone while they were unconscious didn’t sound pleasant in the slightest.

So, he simply swapped his wet clothes and armor for a different one, then took out an extra bundle of clothes.

He tried drying her to the best of his ability before covering her with a dry duvet, hoping it would help.

’It’s almost evening again. So she should wake up soon.’

Exhausted beyond measure, he collapsed on the dry ground beside her and quickly fell asleep. Even as an Evolver, his rough journey today was enough to knock him out.

Hours later, when he woke up, the first thing he noticed was that the woman beside him was gone.

Alarmed, he sprang up in search for her. Had those Vaelari come to take her or something?

He turned towards the entrance, then froze. Selene sat there, having changed her clothes. Her legs dangled in the air, and she looked down at the raging river with a serene expression.

Leon sighed and approached her.

"You know... I would have appreciated it if you woke up earlier," He joked as he sat beside her.

The moon was high in the sky, illuminating the world in its pale silver glow. Leon could see its distorting reflection in the water, and he couldn’t help but think it looked beautiful.

Selene turned to him, her expression unchanged. "I’m sorry."

Leon froze, then immediately sprang up. "Hey... you haven’t been taken over by a parasite, have you?"

She shook her head and turned away. "I scouted the area when I woke up. We were on the mountain, right? Now, we’re at the bottom of it.

A soft sigh escaped her lips, and she asked, "What forced you down here?"

Leon slowly relaxed and sat down again. "Well, this planet’s dominant race is not as friendly as I thought. They were hell-bent on killing us."

His eyes flickered with a hint of rage, but with nothing to unleash it on, it was quickly dispelled.

Selene noticed, and she asked, "So they were the ones who chased you? How strong are they, and how many were they?"

"Mn?" Leon glanced at her and answered, "They had about a dozen Tier Two Evolvers. The rest were Tier One. About fifty of them, I guess. There could be more."

Selene slowly nodded, her expression still the same.

None of them said anything for a while until Leon yawned and asked, "Well, how did it go? I hope the rough ride didn’t cause any complications."

Selene shook her head. "No, it was fine. I’m Tier Two now—Level 69."

Leon’s eyes widened in surprise, and he smiled. "Great. I guess my efforts paid off. Now, you have to carry me untill I complete this requirement."

To his surprise, Selene didn’t retort with a sarcastic comment. She simply nodded.

He yawned and turned to her. "Hey, are you really alright? You seem gloomy."

She looked at him and smiled faintly. "You should go and rest, Leon. You’re feeling sleepy."

He was about to argue when he yawned again. Clicking his tongue, he stood up and went back inside the cave.

"Alright. Wake me up once it’s morning. Goddamn... I really need this sleep."

Selene watched him go, then turned back to the flowing river.

Her blue eyes swirled with something dark and vengeful. Even before it began, she could already smell blood in the air.
