Selene had been roughly dragged out of the cave—by her hair. Seven Vaelari surrounded her unconscious figure, studying her curiously. One of them kicked her shoulder slightly, turning her over.

They stared at her nose and ears which were obviously different from theirs, curious.

"What kind of alien is this?" A woman asked, sounding irritated.

Another woman beside her shrugged and opened her mouth to speak. Before she could, the tip of a spear shot out from her neck, cutting off the words in her throat.

She died without noticing what had killed her.

Boom!

Leon landed on her corpse, flattening it into mangled flesh. The other Vaelari around her scattered, looking at him warily.

Leon picked Selene from the ground and looked at them. They had already surrounded him, and were ready to strike.

"He killed Salina! He has to die!" The other woman shrieked.

Leon ignored her and looked at the woman he had spared earlier. She held his gaze defiantly.

He slowly nodded, then stepped back. He vanished into his own shadow, taking Selene with him.

"He’s escaping!"

The woman shouted, but it was too late. Leon was already gone.

The leader, a man with a muscular build and a pretty face, stared at where Leon had been standing and shook his head.

"They’re more dangerous than we thought. Salina died without even being able to react."

He turned to the woman who had shrieked earlier and asked, "Did you mark him?"

She huffed and said, "Yes."

Instantly, the man smiled. "Then he dies today."

Meanwhile, Leon stepped out of the shadows again, then immediately doubled over and spat out blood.

His body trembled, and his eyes reddened. After teleporting several times using the shadows and the other teleportation ability, he had finally run out of mana.

In fact, this last travel had been forced, as he didn’t have enough mana to actually take the two of them. Yet, he still did it, knowing there would be a backlash.

It wasn’t that he was willing to torture himself. He simply had no other choice. Every one of those Vaelari was Tier Two, and he had only managed to kill the weakest one.

If he got into a fight with them while having to protect Selene, he wasn’t sure he could survive for long.

Wiping the blood from his lips, he laid Selene on the ground and sat under the tree.

’Curses... this mana backlash is so weird. It feels like I’m injured everywhere.’

He forced back the blood that was threatening to rise into his throat, then looked around.

He needed to leave the mountain range fast, as there seemed to be more Vaelari around here. Perhaps they had a small tribe in the area. He wasn’t sure, though. But that didn’t matter.

He still had to leave.

It was past noon already, and the sun here was particularly scorching. Wondering if the sun could evolve too, he carried Selene again and tied her to his back like a child.

Now with his arms free, he held his spear and took a deep breath.

’I will have my revenge later. Now, I should find the safest route out of here.’

Snap!

Hearing the sound of a branch snapping, he turned and saw a quadrupedal beast slowly moving towards him. It had been hiding well, until it made a mistake and stepped on a dry branch.

Leon didn’t hesitate and dashed towards it. With a swift flick of his spear, it was beheaded, and blood spurted from the stump.

[You have...]

Leon ignored the corpse and immediately began moving again. He couldn’t afford to remain relaxed in this situation.

He couldn’t use any of his abilities for now, only traits. With that, he could only rely on his own physical stats.

Breezing through the forest at full speed, he passed by many parasitized beasts, zombies, and plants. However, he was too fast for them to even catch, let alone stopping him.

However, a few were still able to chase after him. Leon showed no mercy. He immediately turned around and attacked the pursuing creature viciously, shredding it to pieces in mere moments.

Most of them were stronger than him, but they still fell nonetheless.

None of them were able to stop him. However, they did slow him down and let the actual pursuers catch up.

Hearing the voices echoing behind him, Leon’s expression darkened with rage. There were even more of them now, spread out through the forest and actively hunting after him.

He felt tired... and madly furious.

Sadly, he couldn’t unleash his fury upon them. Even though he wanted to be careless, he couldn’t afford to be.

Not only was Selene unconscious, but she was also evolving. He didn’t want to risk her getting an injury and dying because of it, or failing to evolve and receiving a severe backlash.

He increased his speed and finally stopped at a dead end. He had arrived at the edge of the mountain, and there was nothing on the other side to jump to. A dark blue river passed by the edge of the mountain down below, flowing downstream.

On its other side stretched an endless expanse of yellow grassland for as far as he could see.

’Jump down?’ He thought, immediately dismissing it.

Their chances of surviving the fall were critically low. He couldn’t risk it. Sensing several figures appear behind him, he turned to face them.

About fifty Vaelari Evolvers stood facing him, all holding different weapons in their hands. The leader stepped forward, his expression confident.

"I already told you. You’re dying today. Intelligent or not, we will kill you."

Another one looked at Leon curiously and asked, "What race is he? I haven’t seen his kind even in the records."

The leader sized Leon up, then grunted. "We’ll know that when we kill him."

He raised a hand, and thick blue lightning crackled over his arm.

Leon cautiously took a step back.

The leader stared at him, then asked, "Alien, do you know why you are going to die?"

Leon said nothing.

The man continued. "Because mercy is a gift, and our race shows no mercy."

Irritated that he still hadn’t killed Leon, Salina’s friend growled. "If you won’t do it quickly, then I will! Soul Spike!"

A black ball of energy shot towards Leon, and he quickly slashed towards it will his spear.

Sadly, that didn’t block the attack in the slightest. It simply passed through his weapon and struck him squarely in the chest.

More precisely, in his soul.

Leon stiffened as he lost control of his body. He tilted from the imbalance, then fell backward... straight down.
