Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 428: I Like Ivy SherwoodMiles Mercer was stunned for two seconds, then looked at Xavier Mercer and Connor Mercer. "Brothers, it’s not April Fools’ Day, is it?"
’Otherwise, I must have misheard.’
A flicker of pain crossed Ivy Sherwood’s face. "I’m pregnant. Three months along. The baby is Quentin Blackwood’s, but we’ve already broken up. I considered getting an abortion, but when I think about this little baby already inside me, I just can’t bring myself to be so heartless."
"Brothers, Grandpa, I want to have this baby. My mother might have had me under similar circumstances. I understand her now. I want to be a little selfish, too, and have this baby. Is that okay?"
At the thought of her mother, Ivy Sherwood’s eyes reddened.
"Ivy, don’t cry. We were just caught off guard, that’s all. Is it really true? I’m going to be an uncle?" Miles Mercer couldn’t believe it.
’My little sister is actually having a baby!’
Xavier Mercer’s face turned livid. He said nothing, simply stating, "I’m going out."
Of course, Ivy Sherwood knew exactly what Xavier was going to do. He was definitely going to find Quentin Blackwood and settle the score.
How dare he bully his sister? It didn’t matter if he was Quentin Blackwood.
"Xavier," Ivy Sherwood said, grabbing his arm. "He doesn’t know I’m pregnant. I wasn’t pregnant when we broke up. I only found out later. I just couldn’t bear to give up this baby."
Miles Mercer chimed in, "Ivy, you’re still protecting that man."
Ivy Sherwood shook her head. "I’m not protecting him. I get pissed off just thinking about him now. If you’re going to go after him, just beat him up a bit. But whatever you do, do not tell him I’m pregnant."
"Don’t worry." Xavier Mercer said those two words through clenched teeth.
Meanwhile, Old Master Mercer wiped at his tears and pulled Ivy Sherwood into a hug. "My dear granddaughter, how could you... how did you..."
"Grandpa, are you about to ask how I ended up on the same path as Mom? I think she and I must have felt the same way. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have overcome every obstacle just to give birth to me."
"Besides, Grandpa, Mom and I are different. She never told you who my father was, but I’m admitting it openly: the baby is Quentin Blackwood’s. I don’t want any more entanglement with him, which is why I don’t want him to know."
"Grandpa, brothers, if you want to scold me, then go ahead." Now that Ivy Sherwood had confessed, it was clear she had made up her mind.
But who in the Mercer family could bring themselves to scold her? Their hearts ached for her too much for that.
If only they had found her sooner, they never would have let her suffer such an injustice.
That Blackwood brat must have seen that Ivy had no powerful family behind her back then and thought she was an easy target.
"Ivy, my sweet granddaughter." The old master held Ivy Sherwood tightly, unwilling to let go.
Ivy Sherwood hadn’t even started crying, but the old master’s eyes were already brimming with tears.
The Mercer family had so few daughters, yet... why did everyone seem to prey on the daughters of their family!
"Grandpa, I’m okay. I’m doing just fine, aren’t I? Besides, I don’t have any regrets, and I know I won’t regret this in the future, either," Ivy Sherwood said, hugging the old master back to comfort him.
...
Leveraging the Mercer family’s influence, they quickly located Quentin Blackwood.
Quentin Blackwood was at the DG office in Lustre. Despite a sleepless night, he was remarkably alert. He had been buried in work for the last two days, but having finished early today, he was back to investigating the shooting case.
The shareholder he’d found previously, the one Joy Sheridan had transferred her shares to, seemed like an unassuming, honest man at the company. He had no significant assets to his name, and his wife and other relatives were exceptionally clean; the investigation turned up nothing.
But the cleaner the picture, the more suspicious it became.
Few people in the business world were truly that clean. In the past two days, Zane Linton had dug in a different direction and had, sure enough, found a few leads. The shareholder had two close friends. The friends themselves weren’t unusual, but their wives had considerable assets registered under their names.
Their lifestyles didn’t match the vast wealth they’d supposedly earned at all.
This confirmed Quentin’s suspicions, though he still lacked hard proof.
The evidence so far proved one thing: this man was not as simple as he appeared. He might be more cunning than any of the Sheridan Group’s other publicly known shareholders.
And whether he had acquired Joy Sheridan’s shares by design or by chance was still unclear.
Then again, what if Joy Sheridan had been working with him...?
Quentin hadn’t considered this possibility before because Old Master Sheridan was Joy’s grandfather, her only relative. It seemed impossible that Joy Sheridan would do anything to her own grandfather.
But Quentin now believed that a woman who’d lost her mind was capable of anything.
Quentin called Zane Linton and told him to investigate along these lines—to see if Joy Sheridan had any contact with this man, and if this man had any contact with the shareholder who had ordered the attack.
It was still uncertain if this man had anything to do with Old Master Sheridan’s death, but for now, he was without a doubt the biggest beneficiary.
Quentin Blackwood had never been one to believe in coincidences. If a person did something, they always left a trail.
Just then, there was a knock on the office door. "President Blackwood, there’s a Mr. Mercer here to see you."
’Mercer?’
"Send him up." Quentin Blackwood guessed it was Ivy Sherwood’s brother, but he wasn’t sure what he wanted.
Xavier Mercer was led to the reception room, and Quentin Blackwood went over shortly after.
The moment Quentin reached the doorway, Xavier threw a punch. The corner of Quentin’s mouth split instantly, and the secretary, who hadn’t left yet, was completely stunned.
"Why’d you just hit him? I’m calling security!" the secretary cried, terrified.
"That’s not necessary. This has nothing to do with you. You can go," Quentin commanded, wiping the blood from his lip.
"Yes, sir." The secretary had no idea what was going on. This tall, handsome man had assaulted President Blackwood on sight, but stranger still, Quentin Blackwood wasn’t even angry.
Soon, only the two of them were left in the reception room. Xavier Mercer grabbed Quentin by the front of his shirt and threw another punch.
Xavier didn’t hold back. The force of the blow was immense, sending Quentin reeling onto the nearby sofa.
A bruise was already forming around Quentin’s eye, and his nose was bleeding, but still, he didn’t retaliate.
Xavier landed two more brutal punches on Quentin. But as he looked at the man just taking the hits, he felt his rage was nowhere near satisfied.
He couldn’t understand how a man like this had managed to coax his little sister away. She was carrying his child, completely unbeknownst to him, and still, she was protecting him—telling Xavier to just land a few punches and let it go.
"Quentin Blackwood, you son of a bitch!" Xavier’s voice was laced with venom.
’Beating this man to death wouldn’t even be going too far.’
Quentin didn’t respond to Xavier’s curse. Instead, he said, "I love Ivy Sherwood."
