"How did a crude piece of trash absorb dragon fire?!" the dragon man bellowed, his voice laced with pure disbelief.

I didn’t waste another second trying to figure it out either. I snatched the rusty dagger off the floor, shoved it back into my belt, and scrambled to my feet!

"VERA! NOW!" I screamed toward the middle of the room.

Viora, who was still locked in combat with the dragon man, used the monster’s momentary distraction. She twisted her trapped wrist out of his grip, kicked her boot hard against his chest, and used the recoil to leap thirty feet backward through the air, landing lightly right beside me!

"Grog! Hana! Seok! RUN UP THE STAIRS!" I ordered, grabbing Viora’s hand. "MOVE!"

08:30...

08:29...

The roof above us began to crumble in earnest now. Giant boulders the size of cars tore away from the ceiling, crashing down onto the vault floor and smashing the stone pillars to dust.

"Retreat! Everyone to the upper core tunnel!" Seok bellowed, taking the lead as he sprinted into the archway.

Grog carried Carmilla and her mother’s body, charging up the stone stairs like a bull, with Hana and the kids right behind him.

"You insolent rats!" the dragon man roared from behind us, his red coat bursting into wild flames as he tried to give chase. "I will tear you all to pieces!"

"Vera! Block the passage!" I called out as we crossed the threshold of the double iron doors.

Viora turned around instantly. She raised her foot and slammed her boot down onto the stone floor at the entrance of the vault with tremendous power!

CRACK-BOOM!

The entire stone archway collapsed instantly. Ton after ton of heavy bedrock rained down, completely sealing the passage behind us with a massive pile of fallen stone, blocking the dragon man’s path entirely.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Muffled roars and violent impacts echoed from the other side of the collapsed rock wall, but the thick stone held firm.

"Hah... hah... hah..." I panted, leaning heavily against the damp tunnel wall as the group sprinted up the spiraling staircase toward the core chamber.

06:12...

06:11...

The air in the tunnel was thick with smoke and dust. The stairs were shaking wildly under our boots, but up ahead the hole was where the exit portal would be.

After jumping down at my words, everyone gathered around the glowing portal, catching their breath in the dim light.

Before anyone could step inside, Black stopped at the edge of the blue light. He turned his head slightly, his sharp, detached dark eyes staring straight at me from behind his collar.

"I failed my objective today," Black spoke, his voice cold and emotionless. "The royal line fell, and this gate turned into a mess. But we will meet again soon, Brian... And Vera."

Without waiting for a reply, Black stepped backward into the blue light and vanished into thin air.

Grog spat on the floor, shaking his heavy head in disgust as he held Carmilla and her mother’s body. "Good riddance. That guy didn’t do a single useful thing the entire raid."

"Whatever, let’s just get out of here," Grog muttered, stepping into the portal with Carmilla, her already dead mother, and the two young kids. "We need to get these people to a safe place."

I let out a long, exhausted breath, turning my head to look at Vera, who was still holding my hand firmly in hers. Her white mask was dusted with gray rock powder, but her purple eyes were completely calm.

"Ready to go back?" I asked softly.

"Yes," Viora replied in her usual, deadpan tone. "I am hungry."

I couldn’t help but let out a quiet laugh despite the chaotic, collapsing cavern around us.

00:45...

00:44...

Holding Viora’s hand tightly, I took a step forward, and together, we stepped straight into the glowing blue light of the exit portal.

WOOOOSH!

The suffocating smell of burning sulfur, thick rock dust, and dragon fire vanished in an instant. Instead, cool night air hit my face, carrying the familiar scent of wet asphalt and modern city exhaust.

My boots hit hard concrete. I stumbled slightly as my injured left leg buckled under my weight, but a firm hand instantly caught my elbow to keep me upright.

We were back in the real world.

We were standing in the quiet, empty alleyway behind the abandoned warehouse where the gate entrance had originally appeared.

The raid was officially over.

Around us, the tired members of the party were collapsed on the ground, catching their breaths in the dark alley.

Hana was sitting on a cold metal crate, gently patting the backs of Carmilla’s two young cousins, who had finally cried themselves to sleep from exhaustion.

Grog sat heavily against a brick wall, while Jisu leaned against a lamppost, carefully wrapping a clean bandage over her wounded chest.

A few feet away, Carmilla was sitting motionless on the concrete floor. She had her knees pulled tightly to her chest, staring blankly at her mother’s body, which Grog had carefully laid out under a clean white sheet. Her eyes were hollow, completely drained of any emotion.

Standing alone in the darkest corner of the alley was Black.

He didn’t look tired. He didn’t have a single scratch on himself. He stood with his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes cold as he stared directly at Viora and me.

He took a few slow steps forward, his boots making a quiet tapping sound against the pavement.

"I failed my objective today," Black said, his voice smooth, cold, and entirely devoid of remorse. "A disappointing outcome."

Jisu raised her head, glaring daggers at him through her messy hair. "Is that all you have to say, you bastard? People died in there! A whole kingdom was slaughtered!"

Black didn’t even bother glancing at Jisu. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Viora and me.

"You two... Brian and Vera," Black continued quietly, a subtle, dangerous edge creeping into his tone. "You are far too strong for simple D-rank. Your presence changed the entire flow of this gate. But no matter. We will meet again soon."

Without waiting for a response, Black turned on his heel. He melted into the shadows of the alleyway like a ghost, vanishing into the night before anyone could say another word.

"Good riddance, creep," Grog muttered, spitting onto the concrete.

Grog slowly stood up, letting out a loud, heavy sigh as he wiped dust off his beard.

"Well," Grog grunted. "That was the absolute worst gate run of my entire life. A mutated gate, a shadow swarm, and a damn dragon in human form."

Jisu pushed off the lamppost, her face still pale from her injuries. "Yeah. I’m taking a whole month off after this. And one thing is for sure—we are never, ever working with you again... And we also never got to meet Viora as you had promised."

Jisu gave a small, respectful nod toward Viora and me before turning around. "Thanks for saving my skin in there, Vera. Brian."

"Take care," I replied quietly through my mask.

Grog, Jisu, and Hana, slowly walked out of the dark alleyway, heading toward the bright streetlights of the main road.

Soon, only Seok was left standing in front of us.

"Well then," Seok said. "I suppose I should leave too, Brian."

"Thank you for coming today, Seok," I said. "And thank you for standing your ground in there. If you hadn’t bought time for us, things would have been much worse."

"No worries," Seok laughed softly, shaking his head. "To be honest, I didn’t do much. It was you and Vera who kept everyone alive. You’re a scary guy... playing weak when you have a partner like her."

"I’m not playing," I chuckled weakly. "I really am weak right now."

"Right, right," Seok grinned, obviously not believing a word of it. He patted his spear against his shoulder. "Anyway, I’m heading out. The Hunter Association is going to want a massive report about a Gate opening right in the middle of the city. I’ll make sure to leave your names completely out of the official file so you guys don’t get bothered."

"I appreciate that, Seok," I nodded.

"Get home safe, you two," Seok waved his hand and turned toward the street, his heavy boots fading into the quiet night.

Finally, the silence completely settled around us.

I leaned back against the cool wall, letting my body slide down until I was sitting on the concrete. Every single muscle in my arms and legs felt like lead. The exertion of running, dodging, and using every bit of my physical limits inside that gate had caught up to me all at once.

’Shit...’ I thought, staring down at my bandaged leg and my trembling hands. ’I failed to accomplish my main goal today. I couldn’t find out what Black really was.’

I was too weak today to force answers out of him. But tomorrow... tomorrow I will find a way to track him down and uncover his true identity.

Viora was still standing beside me like a silent guardian.

I reached out my hand, gently patting her arm.

"You can remove your mask now, Viora," I said softly, giving her a gentle smile. "No one is watching us anymore."

I slowly pointed toward Carmilla, "Well except for her and her cousins."

Viora reached up with her slender fingers and pulled off her mask.

She looked down at me sitting on the ground, her face completely calm and deadpan as usual.

"The air here smells better," Viora noted quietly, holding her mask in one hand.
