"Understood," Viora whispered back.

She didn’t ask questions. She didn’t hesitate. The moment my instruction left my lips, her body simply vanished from beside me.

BOOM!

The stone floor where Viora had been standing shattered. The speed of her movement created a violent burst of wind that blew my hair back and knocked a pile of small pebbles across the room.

The dragon man was still raising his right hand, dark crimson fire gathering around his pale fingers as he prepared to incinerate Seok.

Suddenly, his golden eyes widened by a tiny fraction.

SWISH!

Viora appeared directly in front of his face. Her motion was so fast that the air around her cracked like thunder. She didn’t throw a massive magic blast. She kept her mana tightly compressed, wrapping only a whisper-thin layer of faint purple energy around her right fist.

"What—" the dragon man gasped, caught completely off guard.

THAM!

Viora’s fist slammed straight into the side of the dragon man’s jaw with terrifying force!

The impact generated a massive shockwave that rippled through the air! The dragon man’s dark red coat blew backward violently, and his body shot sideways across the ruined vault like a cannonball!

CRASH! BUM!

He smashed through two thick stone pillars, sending heavy boulders tumbling down into the dust, before slamming hard into the far cavern wall forty feet away.

Seok froze mid-stride, his glowing blue spear still raised high in the air. He blinked blankly through his mask, staring at the empty space where the terrifying dragon man had been standing just a second ago.

"W-What just happened?!" Seok stammered, his jaw practically hitting the floor. "Where did he go?!"

"Don’t stand there staring!" I yelled, limping forward as fast as my injured leg could carry me. "He’s not dead! Grab Carmilla and move toward the exit staircase!"

11:45...

11:44...

The blue timer floating at the edge of my sight kept ticking down without mercy.

ROAAAAAR!

A furious, deafening roar exploded from the pile of rubble across the room. The thick fallen pillars burst outward as a violent shockwave of dark red aura cleared away the dust in an instant.

The dragon man stepped out from the ruined wall. His pale face was covered in rock dust, and a small trickle of red blood ran down the corner of his mouth where Viora’s fist had struck him. His golden eyes were burning with pure, murderous rage, the black fur collar of his coat singed by his own surging mana.

"You... dirty human rat!" he snarled, his voice vibrating with enough pressure to make the stone under our feet tremble. "How dare a weak insect put her filthy hands on me?!"

"Vera, keep him occupied!" I shouted, pulling my dagger from my hip sheath. "Don’t let him cast wide-area fire magic!"

Viora didn’t say a word. She simply lowered her stance, her faint purple aura flickering around her boots as she charged straight back at the dragon man!

CLANG! BANG! THUD!

In the center of the vault, a desperate, chaotic brawl erupted.

The dragon man fought with terrifying, explosive strength. Every time he swung his clawed hands, sharp arcs of red blood-mana sliced through the air, tearing deep gashes into the stone floor and pillars. But Viora moved like a purple shadow, dodging his lethal claws.

Her movements were sharp, precise, and brutally heavy. Every time her faint-purple-wrapped knuckles hit the dragon man’s scaled arms, a sound like a metal hammer striking an anvil echoed through the cavern.

CLANG!

"Die!" the dragon man roared, thrusting his open palm forward to release a concentrated blast of dragon fire directly at Viora’s chest!

Viora didn’t dodge. She threw a heavy straight punch straight into the center of the gathering fire!

BOOM!

The sheer physical pressure of her fist blew the flames apart before they could even ignite.

Meanwhile, I was sprinting across the battleground, wincing with every step as sharp pain shot up my left leg.

"Jisu! Grog! Get up!" I barked as I reached the pile of rubble where they had tumbled.

Grog groaned heavily, shaking his big head as Hana helped pull him to his feet. Jisu was clutching her chest, her mouth blood-stained, but she was still holding the broken half of her broadsword.

"Brian..." Jisu panted, her voice raspy. "That girl... Vera... what kind of monster is she?!"

"Save the questions for later!" I snapped, grabbing Jisu by her elbow to pull her upright. "Hana, take the two kids! Grog, grab Carmilla’s mother’s body if you can, or grab Carmilla! We are moving to the staircase right now!"

"I’ve got the kids!" Hana said quickly, wrapping her arms around the two crying vampire cousins and pulling them toward the dark exit archway at the back of the room.

I turned around and limped over to where Carmilla was sitting against the shattered pillar.

She was completely limp. Her face was smeared with dust and dried blood, and her crimson eyes were staring hollowly at the floor. She wasn’t moving. She wasn’t trying to defend herself. She looked like a shell of a person whose soul had been completely ripped out.

"Carmilla! Get up!" I shouted, reaching down to grab her shoulder. "We have to run! The gate is collapsing!"

She didn’t respond. She didn’t even look up at my mask.

"Leave me..." she whispered, her voice lifeless. "Father is gone... Mother is dead... again... There is nowhere for me to go..."

"Shut up!" I gritted my teeth, gripping her collar tightly and yanking her upright. "Your mother gave her life to protect you! Do you think she wanted you to die in this dirty pit?! Move your legs!"

Carmilla’s head leaned back limply, tears spilling silently over her pale cheeks, but she was too weak to stand on her own.

"Grog! Take her!" I ordered.

Grog rushed over. He scooped up Carmilla under one arm and slung the lifeless body of her mother over his other shoulder.

"I’ve got them!" Grog grunted, his feet sinking into the dust as he turned toward the staircase. "Seok! Let’s go!"

10:15...

10:14...

"I’m covering the rear!" Seok yelled, stepping back toward us while keeping his spear leveled at the center of the room.

Suddenly, the air inside the vault turned boiling hot.

WOOOOOSH!

"ENOUGH!"

The dragon man’s furious roar echoed like thunder.

He managed to catch Viora’s wrist with his left hand, taking a heavy physical blow to his shoulder just to lock her in place for a single second. With his right hand free, he pointed three fingers directly at the archway where Hana and the young kids were trying to escape!

"None of you are leaving this place alive!" the dragon man snarled, his golden eyes flashing with insane cruelty.

A massive, five-foot-wide spear of dark red dragon fire materialized in mid-air right above his head, aiming straight at Hana’s back!

"Hana, look out!" Seok shrieked in absolute panic.

Hana turned around, her eyes widening in pure terror as the blinding red heat reflected in her pupils. She had both kids wrapped in her arms—she couldn’t raise her staff in time to cast a protective barrier!

’Shit!’ my brain screamed.

I was far away from Hana. My left leg was injured, and I had no long-range defensive skills.

If that dragon spear hit Hana, she, the kids, and the exit passage would be vaporized into ash in a fraction of a second.

There was no time to think. There was no time to calculate stats.

I threw my body forward, sliding across the dusty stone floor with every bit of physical strength left in my exhausted lungs.

As I slid past the base of a broken pillar, my eyes caught a glimpse of something hanging from my side belt loop.

The ancient, rusty dagger I had picked up behind the throne downstairs.

My hand moved purely on instinct. I didn’t draw my standard steel dagger. My fingers wrapped tightly around the rough, dust-covered hilt of the ancient knife.

SWISH!

The giant spear of dragon fire burst forward, flying through the air at blinding speed toward Hana!

"GET DOWN!" I roared at the top of my lungs.

I thrust my hand upward from the floor, throwing the rusty old dagger straight into the path of the incoming dragon fire.

It was a completely desperate and absurd move. Throwing a tiny, rust-covered piece of metal against a high-tier dragon spell made zero sense.

But the moment the rusty dagger left my hand, something impossible happened.

CLINK!

The moment the dark red flames touched the tip of the rusty blade in mid-air, the old knife didn’t melt.

Instead, a strange, ancient pulse of black light flared up from the pitted surface of the blade! The rust covering the guard cracked slightly, and the tiny knife absorbed the concentrated dragon fire like a dry sponge soaking up water.

BOOM!

The massive spear of dragon fire violently collapsed in on itself, exploding into a harmless puff of grey smoke and flying sparks.

The rusty dagger bounced off a pillar, and fell back down to the floor, landing with a quiet clatter right next to my hand.

Silence instantly washed over the vault for a second.

Hana blinked, staring down at the harmless sparks floating down onto her hair.

Seok stopped breathing and Jisu stared in complete shock.

Even the dragon man froze, his golden eyes wide with total disbelief as he stared at the tiny, rusty knife lying on the floor.

"What... what was that weapon?!" the dragon man gasped, his voice losing its arrogant tone for the first time. "How did a crude piece of trash absorb dragon fire?!"
