’Shit! A dragon?!’ I thought, my heart slamming violently against my ribs.

The sheer pressure radiating from the sky was suffocating. It wasn’t like the mana of normal monsters or even the mutated boss I had just killed in another Gate. This was raw, oppressive aura from an apex predator.

High above the torn roof, the massive crimson dragon looked down at the ruined cavern. Its glowing golden eyes swept over the dust, the rubble, and the weeping royal family.

Then, the beast shifted.

A blinding, dark red light erupted from the dragon’s massive body, forcing all of us to raise our arms to shield our eyes. The huge wings folded inward, and the giant scaly frame shrank at an unbelievable speed.

When the light faded, the massive monster was gone.

Standing in the mid-air right above the shattered ceiling was a tall, pale man. He wore a heavy, dark-red coat trimmed with black fur, and his eyes burned with the exact same molten gold light as the dragon’s. Long crimson hair floated gently around his shoulders, defying gravity as he hovered in the open sky.

He slowly floated downward, his black boots landing soundlessly on a pile of broken stone just thirty feet away from us.

"Look at this pathetic sight," the dragon man spoke, his voice deep, echoing, and dripping with pure disgust. "The proud Vampire Royal Family... reduced to cowering in a dirty hole like rats."

Neither Carmilla nor her mother answered him.

Carmilla’s mother was still on her knees, clutching her husband’s blood-soaked, crushed body against her chest. Her sobbing shrieks filled the ruined room, her hands shaking violently as she pressed them over the gaping chest wound.

Carmilla stood right beside her, completely frozen. Her face was deadly pale, her eyes wide and fixed on her father’s lifeless face.

"Again?" Carmilla whispered, her voice trembling so hard it could barely be heard. "Again? AGAIN?! Why?!"

Her mind was completely breaking. She had watched her kingdom fall, her people get slaughtered, and now, her father had been murdered right in front of her eyes.

The dragon man narrowed his golden eyes. He raised a brow, clearly displeased that the small, shattered vampires were ignoring his presence.

"How rude," the dragon man sneered, raising his hand casually. "A puppet king is dead, and you act as if the world has ended. Let me end your suffering then."

He didn’t swing a blade. He didn’t cast a chant. He simply flicked his finger forward.

SWISH!

Two pitch-black, needle-sharp spikes made of solid blood-mana materialized out of thin air!

"GUH!"

Before anyone could even react, the two spikes shot forward like bullets and embedded themselves straight into Carmilla’s mother’s chest and stomach!

The impact slammed her mother backward onto the dusty floor. Dark blood spurted from her mouth, staining her pale lips.

"MOTHER!" Carmilla shrieked, her voice snapping from a quiet whisper into a horrifying, desperate scream. She threw herself onto the stone floor beside her mother, catching her trembling shoulders. "Mother! No! No, no, no!"

Her mother’s eyes flickered weakly. She raised one bloody hand, lightly touching Carmilla’s tear-stained cheek for a single second, before her arm dropped completely limp onto the dirt.

Ding!

Right at that exact moment, a screen flashed directly in front of my face.

I stared at the system notification, my cold sweat running down the back of my neck behind my white mask.

’So THAT was the hidden condition?!’ my mind screamed in total realization. ’The portal wasn’t locked because of a boss... it was locked because the gate’s narrative required the royal line to be wiped out! The system was waiting for them to die!’

The timer in the corner of the blue screen was already ticking down rapidly.

"Shit!" I swore under my breath.

If the entire building collapsed, or if the portal closed, we would all be buried alive under hundreds of tons of bedrock or lost in the void forever!

"Everyone!" I yelled, turning my head toward the rest of the raid party. "The portal is open down below! We have less than fifteen minutes before the whole gate collapses! We have to leave NOW!"

"AAARRRRRRGH!"

A wild, animalistic scream tore through the room.

Carmilla had completely lost her sanity. Pure, dark crimson mana exploded outward from her small body like an erupting volcano! Her eyes turned completely blood-red, her fangs extending sharp and long as she kicked off the ground with explosive speed.

She didn’t care if she lived or died.

She drew two thin, silver daggers from out of th8n air and lunged straight at the dragon man’s throat!

"DIE! DIE! DIE!" she screamed wildly, slashing her blades in a blinding flurry of desperate strikes!

"Carmilla, STOP!" I shouted, reaching out my hand. "Don’t fight him! We need to run!"

The dragon man didn’t even bother drawing a weapon. He stood completely still on the rock pile, a lazy, arrogant smirk playing on his lips.

As Carmilla’s silver daggers came flying toward his neck, he simply raised his right hand.

CLANG! CLANG!

He effortlessly blocked both of her high-speed weapon strikes using just two of his fingers! The dense, red dragon scales on his fingertips easily stopped the silver blades as if they were made of plastic.

"Weak," the dragon man scoffed, shifting his wrist slightly.

BANG!

He flicked his index finger against the side of Carmilla’s blade. The sudden shockwave shattered her silver dagger into pieces and sent Carmilla flying backward through the air like a ragdoll! She slammed heavily against a thick stone pillar, coughing up blood as she slid down onto the dusty floor.

"Shit! She shouldn’t be fighting him!" I gritted my teeth, taking a step forward. "We have to get out of here!"

"Damn it all!" Jisu cursed loudly beside me. "I know we need to run, but I can’t just watch a kid get slaughtered like that!"

"Jisu, wait!" I warned.

Jisu didn’t listen. Her legs kicked off the stone, her hand glowing with bright yellow mana, turning into a sword as she charged straight at the dragon man’s flank! "Get away from her, you scaled bastard!"

The dragon man didn’t even turn his body. He casually raised his left hand, catching the blade directly in his bare palm!

CRACK!

The yellow mana surrounding Jisu’s sword instantly shattered upon impact.

"What?!" Jisu gasped, her eyes widening in complete horror.

Before Jisu could pull back, the dragon man drove his elbow straight into Jisu’s chest!

THAM!

The force of the blow shattered Jisu’s chest plate. Jisu let out a sharp gasp of pain and flew backward across the vault, crashing violently into Grog and sending both of them tumbling onto the floor in a heap of broken armor and dust.

"Jisu! Grog!" Hana shrieked, running over to cast a quick healing light over them.

I gritted my teeth behind my mask, my eyes darting frantically between the ticking timer on my screen and the dragon man.

Time was slipping away way too fast. If we stayed here arguing or fighting this monster head-on, every single person in this place was going to die.

Seok stepped up right next to me, his spear raised high, his knuckles white from holding his spear so tightly. His face was covered in cold sweat, and I could see his legs shaking slightly from the sheer pressure of the enemy, but his eyes were completely firm.

He turned his head slightly toward me, his voice rough and low.

"I’m sorry, Brian," Seok said quietly. "I know you’re right. I know the smart choice is to cut our losses and sprint for that portal right now. But... I can’t just turn my back and watch people get executed in front of me. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself."

"You can’t beat him!" I said sternly, my voice tight. "He’s a high-rank dragon in human form! Your physical attacks won’t even scratch his scales!"

"I don’t need to beat him," Seok gritted his teeth, stepping forward to put his body between the dragon man and Carmilla. "I just need to buy enough time for you, Vera, and Hana to get those young kids to the exit!"

"Seok!"

"GO!" Seok roared at the top of his lungs, channeling every last drop of his mana into his spear! A bright, golden barrier of light flared up around his body as he charged straight toward the dragon man! "TAKE THE KIDS AND RUN!"

The dragon man looked at Seok’s glowing spear with mild amusement, as if an ant had just raised its tiny legs to block his boot.

"How annoying," the dragon man muttered, his golden eyes flashing dangerously as dark fire began gathering around his fingertips. "More insects throwing their lives away."

Carmilla was lying near the broken pillar, bleeding from her mouth, her crimson eyes staring blankly at her mother’s body. The two young cousins were crying hysterically in the corner, holding onto Hana’s coat.

The timer was mercilessly ticking down.

My brain was running at absolute maximum speed. Fighting a dragon lord at my level was suicide. But letting Seok, Carmilla, and the rest of the party get wiped out meant we wouldn’t even make it to the portal as a complete team.

I glanced over at Vera, who was standing right beside me, completely unbothered by the dragon’s terrifying aura. Her purple eyes behind her white mask were locked directly on my face, calmly waiting for my words, maybe.

I took a deep, heavy breath, resting my hand on the hilt of my dagger.

"Viora," I whispered softly. "Change of plans. We’re not running just yet."

Viora didn’t hesitate for a single second. A thin, dangerous streak of dark purple energy flickered around her fingertips.

"Understood," she replied quietly. "Should I kill him?"

"No," I said, my eyes narrowing as I calculated the trajectory. "Just knock him back and buy us three minutes. We’re getting everyone out of here alive!"
