High Elder Thalor looked down at Elian, then shifted his glowing amber eyes toward Viora and me.

He stared directly at our brown paper lunch bags. His face was completely still, but his thin white eyebrows twitched upward just a little bit.

"Elian," the High Elder said, his voice deep and smooth like falling water. "You bring strangers into the sacred courtyard of Arbor-Vael... wearing brown parchment sacks over their faces."

"High Elder," Elian explained quickly, keeping his head bowed. "These two are not aligned with the iron invaders. They call themselves Brian and Vera. They came into our realm to hunt down the man in the grey suit."

High Elder Thalor slowly walked down the marble steps. The bottom of his silver robe brushed lightly against the clean stone. He stopped five feet away from us and raised his wooden staff. The large green crystal on top flared with a soft, warm light.

He scanned Viora first.

"Fascinating," Thalor whispered, his amber eyes widening slightly. "You carry no sight in your eyes, yet your spirit perceives every leaf fluttering in the wind. Your hands carry no weapons, but your knuckles hold the quiet power of a true martial master."

Viora bowed her head respectfully beneath her paper mask. "Greetings, High Elder."

Thalor then turned his staff toward me.

"And you," the old elf murmured, examining mw and my iron dagger. "You do not possess a single drop of mana. Yet your breath is steady, your footing is perfect, and your mind is as sharp as cold steel."

"We just want to stop Black before he ruins both our worlds," I said directly, looking back at him through my two paper eye holes.

High Elder Thalor turned his head toward the massive roots behind his wooden palace. A faint trail of dark grey smoke was rising from a large set of heavy iron doors built right into the base of the giant Heart Tree.

"The man in the grey suit breached the root chambers an hour ago," Thalor said heavily. "He brought ten heavily armed men with him. They sealed the ancient iron gate using a strange, glowing lock mechanism from your world. My guards cannot break through the magical shield."

"It feels like an encrypted mana-lock," Viora said, her tone calm. "Standard guild technology used for vault doors. It runs on a physical core key or a heavy code sequence."

"If they drill into the Heart Tree’s central root," Thalor continued, looking back at us, "the spatial anchor of Sylvoria will shatter. This entire world will collapse, and the explosion will swallow the outer city whole."

"We can break that lock," I said, resting my right hand on my dagger handle. "And we can take care of Black."

Thalor looked at us for a long, quiet moment. Then, a small, gentle smile appeared on his old face.

"Very well, Brian of the Paper Mask," High Elder Thalor said, lowering his staff. "If you can protect the Heart Tree and save our kingdom, the Sun-Elves will forever honor your names. Elian, show them the way."

"Follow me!" Elian said, rising to his feet and pulling his curved white bow from his shoulder.

Elian led us around the side of the grand wooden palace, descending a winding flight of stone steps carved directly into the Heart Tree’s massive bark.

The air grew damp and heavy as we went deeper under the tree’s canopy. The golden glow of the leaves above slowly faded, replaced by the deep, pulsing blue light of the tree’s giant roots. Thick, woody cables as wide as bus lanes stretched across the cavernous root chamber, glowing with thick veins of liquid magic.

At the far end of the root chamber stood the ancient iron gate.

It was twenty feet tall, forged from dark, ancient metal covered in elf runes. But right in the middle of the heavy doors, someone had attached a modern, yellow metal device with thick cables running down to a portable generator on the floor.

A bright red energy shield covered the entire seam of the iron gate, humming with loud, annoying static.

"There it is," Elian said, pointing his bow toward the door. "Our warriors tried to chop through it with silver axes, but the red shield bounced every blow back."

Viora stepped up to the red energy barrier. She didn’t touch it. She tilted her head, listening to the high-pitched hum of the generator.

"The barrier is strong, but the generator is weak," Viora noted. "It relies on a single mana-converter box on the ground."

"Can you break the box without setting off an alarm?" I asked.

"I don’t need to be quiet," Viora replied smoothly.

She stepped forward, lowered her center of gravity, and pulled her right fist back to her hip.

THWACK-BOOM!

Viora drove her right fist straight into the center of the yellow converter box on the floor.

The heavy steel box instantly crumpled like a empty tin can under the raw pressure of her strike. Sparks of yellow electricity exploded outward, and the thick red energy shield over the iron gate flickered twice before dying completely.

Elian blinked in absolute shock, his mouth hanging open behind his bow. "She... she destroyed a magic barrier with her bare hand?"

"Vera is very good at breaking things," I chuckled, stepping up to the heavy iron gate.

I grabbed the dark iron handles and pushed with all my physical strength. The giant doors groaned loudly, sliding open just enough for us to squeeze through one by one.

Inside, a long, dark tunnel made of hollow wood and root walls stretched straight down into the earth. The air smelled like burnt oil, metallic copper, and hot lead.

"They went down this way," I said, pointing at fresh boot prints stamped into the damp dirt floor. "They are moving toward the main core chamber."

"I will come with you," Elian said, stepping through the gate with his green arrow ready.

"Keep your distance behind us, Captain," Viora advised softly. "When human guns start firing in small tunnels, lead bullets bounce off the walls."

We moved quickly down the wooden root tunnel.

After three minutes of descending, the narrow tunnel opened up into a massive underground cavern.

This was the Heart Chamber.

In the center of the vast cave hung a giant, floating sphere of pure, liquid gold light. It was the size of a three-story house, pulsing slowly like a calm heartbeat. Thick silver roots wrapped around the floating sphere, holding it in place above a deep, dark pit.

Standing on a wooden platform right beside the golden sphere were Black’s men.

There were eight heavy mercenaries dressed in black tactical armor, carrying automatic rifles and high-voltage stun batons. Two technicians in white suits were kneeling near the edge of the platform, drilling a long diamond-tipped laser pipe directly into the side of the glowing golden core.

Senior Enforcer Black stood right at the front of the platform, holding his heavy metal briefcase in his left hand and a short radio in his right.

"Hurry up with that drill!" Black yelled, his raspy voice echoing off the cavern walls. "The extraction field is only at forty percent! We need to pull the core before the regional council revokes our clearance!"

"Sir!" one technician shouted back over the loud whine of the laser drill. "The outer shell is extremely dense! It will take five more minutes to breach the inner mana wall!"

"You have three!" Black barked, turning around to check his watch.

STEP.

I walked out from the shadow of the root tunnel, my iron dagger held loosely in my right hand. Viora stepped out right beside me, her brown paper lunch bag mask pulled neat and straight over her face.

Black froze. He stared at our paper masks in complete, utter disbelief.

"You..." Black gasped, his face turning pale before flushing with deep red anger. "How... how did you bypass the root gate shield?!"

"Your yellow generator was cheap," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the cavern. "Turn off the drill, Black. It’s over."

Black gritted his teeth, his eyes burning with pure rage. "You two again! Wearing those ridiculous paper bags! Do you have any idea how much money this core is worth on the high-tier market?!"

"It doesn’t matter what it’s worth," Viora said calmly, flexing her fingers. "If you take that core, this realm collapses, and your Eighth Avenue office sinks into a crater."

"I don’t care about Eighth Avenue!" Black screamed. "I have a buyer! Once I have the core, I’m leaving the lower city forever!"

"Kill them!" Black roared to his mercenaries. "Mow them down!"

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Four mercenaries immediately raised their automatic rifles and opened fire! A wall of hot lead ripped through the air, sparkling wildly in the dim golden light of the chamber!

"Get behind cover!" Elian yelled from the tunnel entrance, raising his white bow to return fire.

"Stay back, Elian!" I shouted.

Viora launched herself toward the three mercenaries on the right side of the platform.

She moved like a purple streak. She didn’t use weapons, but her speed was terrifying.

The second mercenary swung his heavy stun baton at her head. Viora didn’t even duck. She leaned her upper body back just enough for the electric baton to pass over her paper mask, then drove a lightning-fast palm strike directly into his chest plate.
