The road stretched endlessly beneath a pale sky that seemed neither day nor night. Kai had long since stopped trying to determine where it led. At first, he had expected the journey to follow the same pattern as everything else. There would be another impossible station, another cryptic guide, another enemy waiting at the end of the path. Instead, there was only silence and the steady rhythm of footsteps. The road simply continued forward, winding through a landscape that felt less like a place and more like a memory trying to remember itself.
Strange lights lined both sides of the path. At first glance they resembled lanterns suspended in the air, but the longer Kai stared at them, the more he understood what they really were. Each light held a moment. Some glowed with warmth and clarity while others flickered weakly, as though they were on the verge of disappearing forever.
As they walked, Kai found himself drawn to them.
Inside one light, he saw Luna sitting beneath a tree, laughing so hard she nearly fell over. In another, Adrian was grinning with the kind of carefree happiness that only existed before tragedy arrived. A third showed Finn standing alone at the end of a hallway, watching something beyond the frame. Then came darker memories. Luna crying. Kai writing furiously in a notebook. Adrian dying. Another light revealed a different death. Another beginning followed. Then another ending.
The pattern continued.
Life.
Loss.
Repetition.
Hope.
Regret.
Kai eventually stopped walking.
Adrian noticed several steps later and turned around. "What happened?"
Kai didn’t answer immediately. His attention was fixed on a single light hovering at the edge of the road.
"I don’t remember this one."
Adrian walked back while Luna joined them. Together they stared at the pale glow suspended in the air.
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
Kai reached out carefully. The instant his fingertips brushed the surface of the light, the world around them dissolved.
A bedroom formed around them.
The transition wasn’t violent. It felt more like stepping into a photograph.
Kai found himself standing beside a small bed where a seven-year-old version of himself lay beneath a blanket. The room was painfully familiar. The faded wallpaper. The stack of books beside the bed. The small crack in the window frame.
He knew this room.
It was his.
Luna stood beside him, staring in disbelief.
Then Kai noticed who else was there.
Finn.
The younger Finn stood near the window, watching the rain slide down the glass.
Kai froze.
"That’s impossible."
Adrian’s expression mirrored his own shock.
"No," Adrian whispered. "That’s us."
Young Kai shifted beneath the blankets. His face was red from crying.
Beside him sat Luna.
Not the Luna standing beside Kai now.
A younger version.
The same bright eyes.
The same stubborn expression.
The same presence that somehow made every room feel warmer.
The bedroom door opened.
Kai’s mother entered carrying a glass of water. She placed it carefully on the nightstand before glancing toward Finn.
"He’s awake?"
Young Luna nodded.
Kai’s mother looked at Finn.
"Did you tell him?"
Finn shook his head.
"No."
"Good."
The conversation instantly made Kai uneasy.
Young Kai sat up in bed.
"What are you talking about?"
No one answered.
He looked between them.
"I heard you."
His mother sighed and sat beside him.
"There is something you need to understand."
"What?"
She hesitated.
Then she looked toward Luna and Finn.
"You aren’t the only one who can remember."
Young Kai frowned.
"What do they remember?"
His mother glanced toward the door as though checking whether someone might be listening.
When she answered, her voice was quiet.
"Everything."
The memory shattered.
The bedroom vanished.
Kai stumbled backward as the road returned around them.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
Then Kai finally said, "They remembered."
Luna frowned.
"Who?"
"You and Finn."
He looked at her.
"You remembered everything before the story."
Adrian folded his arms.
"If that’s true, then why don’t they remember now?"
Kai stared down the road.
The answer came immediately.
Because he already knew it.
"Because I asked them to forget."
Luna stared at him.
"You did what?"
Kai couldn’t meet her eyes.
The memory was coming back now.
Not clearly.
Not completely.
But enough.
"You forgot because of me."
Luna looked genuinely confused.
"Why would you do that?"
Kai laughed softly, though there was no humor in it.
"Because I was scared."
"Scared of what?"
His voice became quieter.
"Of losing you."
The words hung between them.
Luna’s expression softened.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Kai looked away first.
"I thought if you forgot everything, you’d be free."
"Free from what?"
"The story."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"And how did that work out?"
Kai gave him a flat look.
"It didn’t."
"No kidding."
Luna couldn’t help smiling.
Neither could Kai.
The smile faded quickly.
Still, it helped.
A little.
After a moment Luna stepped closer.
"You keep acting like all of this was yours to carry."
Kai didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
She always seemed to be right about the things he least wanted to hear.
"You don’t have to carry it alone."
Kai looked at her.
"I already made everyone else carry it."
"Then let us decide whether we want to."
The words struck harder than he expected.
Before Kai could answer, Adrian spoke.
"That’s what you’ve been telling us this entire time."
Kai frowned.
"What is?"
"That people deserve to choose."
Adrian smiled.
"So stop deciding for us."
For a long moment Kai simply stared at him.
Then he nodded.
"Okay."
They continued walking.
The farther they traveled, the fewer lights remained beside the road.
The memories became older.
More fragmented.
Some weren’t memories at all.
They were pages.
Thousands upon thousands of pages suspended in the darkness.
Entire stories floated around them like leaves caught in an invisible wind.
Kai saw countless versions of events.
Different choices.
Different endings.
Different lives.
Some stories ended happily.
Others ended in tragedy.
Many simply stopped midway through, abandoned before reaching a conclusion.
Then he noticed something strange.
Finn wasn’t in any of them.
Not one page.
Not one ending.
Not one beginning.
Kai stopped again.
"Where is he?"
Adrian looked around.
"Who?"
"Finn."
Luna frowned.
"Wasn’t he ahead of us?"
"No."
Kai shook his head.
"He should be here."
The absence felt wrong.
Intentional.
Like someone had carefully erased him.
The road ahead split into two paths.
One continued straight into the distance.
The other curved toward a dense forest shrouded in shadow.
Kai looked between them.
"What do you think?"
Adrian immediately looked at Luna.
Luna looked at Kai.
Kai groaned.
"Why is everyone looking at me?"
"Because you’re holding the notebook."
Kai glanced down.
He still carried it.
The cover was blank now.
No title.
No name.
Nothing.
He opened it.
Most of the pages were empty.
Only one sentence appeared.
Choose the road you regret taking.
Kai stared.
"That’s incredibly unhelpful."
Luna leaned over his shoulder.
"Maybe it’s not supposed to help."
Adrian looked toward the forest.
"I think we should go that way."
Kai blinked.
"Why?"
"I don’t know."
"You don’t know?"
"Exactly."
Adrian shrugged.
"If I knew, it wouldn’t be regret."
Kai laughed despite himself.
A moment later they turned toward the forest.
The trees swallowed them almost immediately.
Branches twisted overhead, blocking whatever light existed beyond the canopy. The deeper they walked, the quieter the world became.
Eventually Kai heard a voice.
"Kai."
He froze.
The others stopped behind him.
The voice came again.
"Kai..."
Luna’s eyes widened.
"That’s Finn."
Without another word they followed the sound.
The forest thickened.
The ground sloped downward.
Finally they emerged into a clearing.
A house stood at its center.
Kai felt his stomach drop.
It was his childhood home.
The white siding.
The red mailbox.
The broken porch light.
Everything was exactly as he remembered.
Except this version had been abandoned.
The windows were boarded shut.
The paint was peeling.
Grass had overtaken the walkway.
The front door hung open.
Waiting.
Kai stepped inside.
Dust coated every surface.
The furniture was gone.
The silence felt heavy.
Then he saw the walls.
Names covered them.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Carved into the wood.
Kai.
Adrian.
Luna.
Finn.
Again and again.
Layer upon layer.
Not written.
Carved.
Deep enough to scar the walls forever.
"What happened here?" Adrian asked.
Kai couldn’t answer.
Then Luna pointed toward the hallway.
A dark trail stained the floorboards.
Blood.
The three of them followed it.
The trail ended at a closed door.
Kai reached for the handle.
Before he could turn it, a weak voice came from inside.
"Don’t."
Kai froze.
Finn.
Without hesitation, he opened the door.
Finn sat against the far wall.
He looked terrible.
His clothes were torn.
His skin was pale.
One hand pressed against a wound in his side.
Blood stained his fingers.
Kai crossed the room instantly and dropped to one knee.
"Finn."
Finn looked up and managed a tired smile.
"Took you long enough."
"What happened?"
Finn let out a weak laugh.
"I lost."
"To the Reader?"
Finn shook his head.
"Something worse."
Kai’s expression hardened.
"What could possibly be worse?"
Finn looked at Adrian.
Then Luna.
Finally he looked at Kai.
"I met the Author."
The room fell silent.
Kai stared.
"I thought the Author was gone."
"So did I."
"Then where is he?"
Finn slowly raised a hand and pointed toward the wall.
Written across the wood were six words.
THE AUTHOR IS NOT A PERSON.
A second sentence appeared beneath it.
THE AUTHOR IS A CHOICE.
A chill crawled down Kai’s spine.
"What does that mean?"
Finn met his gaze.
"It means anyone can become the Author."
Nobody spoke.
Finn continued.
"If you decide who another person must become, you’re writing them."
His eyes shifted toward Adrian.
"If you decide how their story ends, you’re writing them."
Then he looked toward Luna.
"And if you believe your pain gives you the right to take away someone else’s freedom..."
His gaze returned to Kai.
"...you’re becoming the Author."
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Before Kai could respond, the door behind them slowly closed.
Finn’s face went pale.
"Too late."
The room darkened.
The shadows deepened until they seemed alive.
Then a voice echoed through the house.
Not the Reader.
Not Kai’s mother.
Not anyone he recognized.
A human voice.
Quiet.
Certain.
"He’s right."
Kai slowly turned.
A figure stepped from the darkness.
His breath caught.
It was Luna.
And yet it wasn’t.
She looked older.
Worn by years Kai couldn’t imagine.
Her eyes were red from crying.
A fountain pen rested in her hand.
She looked directly at him.
Not with hatred.
Not with anger.
With sorrow.
A sorrow so deep it hurt to look at.
"I’ve been waiting for you."
Kai stared.
"Who are you?"
The older Luna smiled sadly.
"The version of me who finally made a choice."
The room grew colder.
Finn’s expression filled with dread.
"Run."
But before anyone could move, the older Luna lifted the pen.
And the house disappeared.
