Chapter 140: The Woman Who Wrote the Ending

The house vanished without warning.

One moment, Kai was standing in the hallway beside Adrian while Finn bled against the wall and Luna clutched his sleeve. The next, reality itself seemed to fold inward. There was no sensation of falling, no rushing wind, no feeling of being pulled through space. Everything simply ceased to exist.

The floor disappeared first.

Then the walls.

Then the ceiling.

Even the air felt absent.

An endless darkness stretched in every direction, so complete that Kai could no longer tell whether his eyes were open or closed.

Then something emerged from the void.

A chair.

Old, wooden, ordinary.

A second chair appeared a few feet away.

Then a third.

A wooden table slowly formed between them, as though an invisible hand were assembling the room piece by piece.

And seated calmly on the opposite side of the table was Luna.

Not the Luna standing beside him.

An older Luna.

At first glance they looked almost identical, but the differences became obvious the longer Kai stared. This Luna carried years in her eyes. Not physical age, but experience. Regret. Exhaustion. She looked like someone who had spent an eternity carrying a burden she had never been allowed to set down.

The pen rested lightly between her fingers.

Kai immediately focused on it.

Every instinct in his body told him that pen was important.

Dangerous.

"Where’s Finn?" he demanded.

"Safe."

"Adrian?"

"Safe."

"My Luna?"

The older Luna glanced toward the side.

Kai followed her gaze.

Several feet away stood Luna.

Frozen.

Completely motionless.

Her eyes remained open, but she couldn’t move a muscle.

Kai stepped toward her immediately.

The older Luna calmly raised the pen.

"Don’t."

The single word stopped him.

Not because she shouted.

Because she didn’t.

Her voice remained perfectly calm.

"If you take another step," she said quietly, "I’ll erase her."

Kai froze.

A cold sensation crawled up his spine.

He stared at the pen.

"You wouldn’t."

The older Luna offered him a sad smile.

"You’ve done worse."

His jaw tightened.

"I was trying to save people."

"So was I."

The answer came without hesitation.

Kai folded his arms and stared at her across the table.

"Then tell me what you did."

For the first time, the older Luna lowered her gaze.

Her fingers tightened around the pen.

"I finished your story."

Kai felt his stomach twist.

"When?"

"Before you were born."

The words hit him like a slap.

He stared at her.

"That’s impossible."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Of course it is."

Then she looked directly into his eyes.

"That’s the point."

The older Luna carefully set the pen onto the table.

"I need you to understand something before you decide to hate me."

Kai snorted.

"You’re going to have to work pretty hard."

"I know."

For a moment she simply watched him.

Then she began speaking.

"You think Adrian was the beginning."

Kai remained silent.

"You think the Reader created all of this."

Another pause.

"You think the Author is some distant force sitting outside the story."

"Isn’t it?" Kai asked.

"No."

She shook her head slowly.

"The Author is simply the person who refuses to let the story change."

Kai frowned.

"Then what are you?"

For the first time, genuine sadness crossed her face.

"The person who refused to let you die."

The words shattered the atmosphere.

Kai blinked.

"What?"

"You died."

His stomach dropped.

"When?"

"Before the first Chapter."

A chill swept through him.

"No."

"You were sick."

The answer came immediately.

Kai stared.

"That’s not what happened."

"It is."

"I don’t remember being sick."

"Because you weren’t supposed to."

She leaned forward slightly.

Her expression softened.

"You were a child, Kai."

The older Luna’s voice became quiet.

"You were scared. Your mother was scared."

Then she touched her chest.

"And I was scared."

Kai looked at her.

"You?"

A faint smile appeared.

"You met me when you were ten."

His brow furrowed.

"I don’t remember."

"I know."

She picked up the pen again.

"Because I erased that memory."

Kai felt his blood run cold.

"You erased yourself."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The older Luna looked away.

For the first time since he’d arrived, she seemed genuinely vulnerable.

"Because I couldn’t watch you die."

Silence filled the darkness.

Then she whispered:

"You were supposed to die at seventeen."

A memory suddenly flashed through Kai’s mind.

Rain.

Headlights.

A road.

Shattered glass.

Someone screaming his name.

Then darkness.

He staggered backward.

"The accident."

The older Luna nodded.

"The accident."

"I survived."

"Yes."

Kai slowly looked up.

"Because you changed it."

"I did."

"That’s what started everything."

"Yes."

The honesty in her voice terrified him more than any lie could have.

"You created Adrian."

"No."

"You created the Reader."

"No."

"Then what did you create?"

The older Luna smiled.

Not proudly.

Not happily.

Sadly.

"A second chance."

Reality shattered.

Darkness vanished.

Rain crashed against Kai’s skin.

He found himself standing in the middle of a road.

Headlights cut through the storm.

Ahead stood a younger version of himself.

Sixteen years old.

Terrified.

Frozen in place.

The car was moving too fast.

Kai could already see the impact coming.

On the sidewalk stood Luna.

Crying.

Screaming.

Begging him to move.

But the younger Kai couldn’t.

Fear had rooted him to the road.

Then someone else ran forward.

Finn.

Kai’s eyes widened.

Finn threw himself into the street.

He grabbed the younger Kai.

Shoved him aside.

And took the impact himself.

The collision happened instantly.

Metal.

Glass.

A flash of light.

Then Finn disappeared beneath the headlights.

"No!"

Kai lunged forward.

The scene froze.

Rain stopped in midair.

The car hung motionless.

Finn lay unmoving on the road.

The younger Kai knelt beside him.

The older Luna appeared beside present-day Kai.

"This was the original ending."

Kai could barely breathe.

"Finn died for me."

"Yes."

"Then why am I alive?"

The answer hurt.

"Because you couldn’t accept it."

The older Luna looked toward the frozen scene.

"I found the notebook afterward."

Kai swallowed.

"The first notebook."

She nodded.

"I realized something."

"What?"

"If stories could be written..."

Her eyes settled on Finn.

"...then endings could be rewritten."

Kai looked at her slowly.

"You became the Author."

"Yes."

"But you said anyone could."

"They can."

A sad smile crossed her face.

"But I was first."

The world dissolved again.

Darkness returned.

Kai found himself standing across from her once more.

The silence between them felt heavier now.

"Then where did Adrian come from?"

The older Luna looked directly into his eyes.

"You."

Kai frowned.

"I wasn’t writing anything."

"You were."

She pointed toward his chest.

"You wrote with your memories."

The words made no sense.

Seeing his confusion, she continued.

"When I saved you, I couldn’t save everything."

Kai felt dread creeping into his stomach.

"So I took pieces of you."

His heartbeat quickened.

"And I put them somewhere safe."

"Where?"

She smiled softly.

"Inside Adrian."

Kai froze.

Everything suddenly clicked into place.

The memories Adrian remembered.

The emotions he carried.

The strange connection Kai had always felt toward him.

The desperate need to keep him alive.

Adrian wasn’t merely another person.

He carried pieces of Kai himself.

His fear.

His loneliness.

His anger.

His hope.

His desire to be remembered.

The fragments lost when his story had been rewritten.

"That’s why I couldn’t let him die."

The older Luna nodded.

"You weren’t trying to save Adrian."

Her eyes softened.

"You were trying to save yourself."

Kai closed his eyes.

The truth hurt.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was true.

Nine hundred and thirteen lives.

Nine hundred and thirteen attempts.

Not to rescue Adrian.

To recover what he’d lost.

When he finally opened his eyes again, there was only one question left.

"What about you?"

The older Luna smiled.

"I was part of you too."

Kai stared.

"What does that mean?"

She touched the pen.

"I was the part of you that remembered love."

Everything went quiet.

Kai looked toward the frozen Luna.

Every timeline.

Every story.

Every version.

No matter how much changed.

She always returned.

"Why?" he asked.

The older Luna’s eyes filled with tears.

"Because you wrote me that way."

She stepped closer.

"You made one promise before any of this began."

"What promise?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"If I forget you..."

She smiled sadly.

"...find me."

Something broke inside Kai.

Not a memory.

Something deeper.

A truth he’d always known.

And suddenly Luna moved.

The younger Luna blinked and looked around.

"Kai?"

He turned toward her.

She seemed lost.

Confused.

Afraid.

"Where are we?"

Before he could answer, the older Luna stepped forward.

The two versions of Luna looked at one another.

Recognition appeared instantly.

The younger Luna’s face went pale.

"I know you."

The older Luna nodded.

"I know."

"Who are you?"

A sad smile appeared.

"I’m you."

Everything shook.

A crack split open above them.

Darkness tore apart.

And something enormous looked through.

The Reader.

But it wasn’t alone.

Behind it stood countless figures.

Versions of Kai.

Versions of Luna.

Versions of Adrian.

Versions of Finn.

Every timeline.

Every discarded future.

Every rejected ending.

Watching.

Waiting.

The older Luna looked upward.

"It’s here."

Kai clenched his fists.

"What does it want?"

"The same thing it’s always wanted."

"What?"

Her gaze settled on him.

"For the story to choose an ending."

The pen began glowing.

She held it out.

"Then choose."

Kai stared at it.

"What happens if I take it?"

"You become the Author."

"And if I don’t?"

"Someone else will."

Kai looked at Luna.

At Adrian.

At Finn.

At the countless lives watching from the darkness.

Finally, he understood.

There was never going to be a perfect ending.

There never had been.

Every ending closed one door and opened another.

Someone always had to choose.

Slowly, Kai reached forward.

His fingers wrapped around the pen.

The older Luna smiled.

"Good."

Something in her expression made him pause.

"Why are you smiling?"

Her body began dissolving into light.

Relief appeared on her face.

Real relief.

The kind carried by someone finally reaching the end of a journey.

"Because now I can stop."

Kai’s eyes widened.

"Luna—"

"Not me."

She looked toward the younger Luna.

"Her."

And then she was gone.

The pen remained.

The Reader descended.

The forgotten timelines stirred.

Reality began collapsing around them.

Luna looked at him.

"What are you going to write?"

Kai stared into the empty space ahead.

For the first time in a very long time...

He didn’t know.

And somehow that uncertainty felt right.

He raised the pen.

Then he wrote:

Nobody gets to decide who we become.

The words spread across existence itself.

Everything stopped.

The Reader stopped.

The forgotten versions stopped.

Even time seemed to hesitate.

Silence ruled for a single impossible moment.

Then laughter echoed somewhere in the distance.

Warm.

Familiar.

Finn.

"About damn time."

Kai laughed.

And at last, the darkness broke.
