The other Eden stepped through the crack, and nothing happened at first. That was what made it frightening. There was no explosion, no surge of power, and no dramatic shift in the weather. He simply walked through the opening and placed one foot onto the grass beneath the tree as if he had done it a hundred times before. He looked exactly like Eden. The same face, the same height, the same dark eyes, even the same slight tilt of his head whenever he was studying something he didn’t understand. Yet there was one difference. He wasn’t carrying any of the exhaustion Eden had accumulated through countless lives. He looked untouched, clean, and complete, as though someone had taken every painful part of Eden and erased it. The other Eden glanced around the yard before smiling softly.
"So this is what you chose."
Eden stepped forward immediately. "What do you want?"
"Everything."
Adrian sighed. "At least he’s honest."
Finn shot him a look. "Don’t encourage him."
The other Eden laughed. It sounded exactly like Eden’s laugh, and somehow that bothered Eden more than anything else. Mira stepped forward, her expression hardening.
"You shouldn’t be here."
The other Eden’s gaze shifted to her, and for the first time his expression changed.
"You."
Mira’s eyes narrowed. "You remember me?"
"I remember what you did."
Eden looked between them. "What did she do?"
The other Eden smiled. "She ruined everything."
Mira didn’t respond.
"In my world there was no Luna," he continued.
Luna stiffened.
"There was no Finn."
Finn frowned.
"No Adrian."
Adrian’s expression darkened.
"And there was no Reader."
Eden stared at him. "Then what was there?"
The other Eden spread his arms.
"Me. A perfect world."
Eden shook his head. "That doesn’t sound perfect."
"It was."
"No."
Eden pointed toward the crack behind him.
"You’re standing here."
The other Eden’s smile vanished.
"Because you stole it."
"I didn’t steal anything."
"You stole my future."
Eden narrowed his eyes.
"I don’t even know you."
"You don’t need to."
The other Eden looked toward Luna.
"You took her."
Then Adrian.
"You took him."
Then Finn.
"You took him too."
Finally his gaze settled on Mira.
"And she took the rest."
Mira remained silent.
The other Eden laughed again.
"You all destroyed the life I was supposed to have."
Eden folded his arms.
"Then why didn’t you stop us?"
The other Eden’s smile returned.
"Because I couldn’t."
He raised his hand, and the crack behind him widened. A second world appeared beyond it. Then a third. Then dozens more. Each contained another version of Eden. Some stood alone while others were surrounded by people. Some were children. Some were old. Some were dead. Some were monsters. Some looked genuinely happy.
Eden stared at the impossible sight.
"How many?"
The other Eden answered quietly.
"Enough."
The sky darkened overhead. Luna moved closer to Eden.
"He’s pulling them together."
Eden nodded. "I know."
Mira shook her head.
"No."
Eden looked at her.
"What?"
"He’s not pulling them together."
She pointed toward the worlds.
"They’re choosing him."
Eden’s expression shifted.
The alternate Edens were walking toward the cracks one by one. Each version stepped into the space between worlds and turned to look at him. Every single one smiled. Not with hatred. Not with anger.
With recognition.
The first alternate Eden stepped forward.
"You remember me."
The second followed.
"So do I."
The third smiled.
"And me."
Soon dozens of voices overlapped with one another.
"We remember."
"We remember."
"We remember."
Eden felt memories slamming into his mind from every direction. Lives he had never lived. Decisions he had never made. Friends he had never met. Losses he had never suffered. It was overwhelming. He dropped to one knee, clutching his head.
Luna grabbed his shoulder.
"Eden!"
He gritted his teeth.
"I can hear them."
"Who?"
"Everyone."
Adrian crouched beside him.
"Can you shut it out?"
"No."
Finn looked toward the alternate Edens.
"Then maybe we shouldn’t."
Eden looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Finn gestured toward the crowd.
"They aren’t trying to destroy us."
The nearest alternate Eden smiled.
"We aren’t."
Finn crossed his arms.
"Then what do you want?"
The answer came from all of them at once.
"To be remembered."
Silence followed.
Eden slowly pushed himself back to his feet.
"You don’t want my life."
The other Eden shook his head.
"No."
"You want yours."
"Yes."
Eden looked toward the countless worlds stretching beyond the cracks.
"Then why attack us?"
The other Eden answered quietly.
"Because you were the only one who escaped."
Eden frowned.
"Escaped what?"
"The ending."
Mira stepped forward.
"He’s right."
Eden looked at her.
"When you created the first story, every possible version of you was supposed to experience its own ending. But you broke the system."
Eden remembered. The Archive. The Reader. The Author. The endless rewrites. He had believed he was escaping the story itself. Now he realized the truth.
He had been escaping his ending.
Mira continued.
"You created a world where you could live without becoming any of them."
Eden looked at the alternate versions surrounding them.
"But they couldn’t."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because every time you changed something, their worlds became impossible."
Eden felt his stomach sink.
"So every happy ending I created..."
"Destroyed someone else’s."
Every victory. Every rescue. Every death he had refused to accept. Every life he had rewritten.
Someone else had paid the price.
The realization hit harder than any enemy ever had.
He looked at the other Eden.
"How many worlds did I destroy?"
The answer came quietly.
"All of them."
Eden closed his eyes.
Luna stepped beside him.
"Eden."
He shook his head.
"No."
She reached toward him.
He stepped away.
"I did this."
"You didn’t know."
"That doesn’t change it."
Luna met his gaze.
"It changes everything."
Eden looked at her.
"How?"
"Because now you know."
She moved closer.
"And you still have a choice."
The alternate Edens watched in silence.
The other Eden turned toward Luna.
"You always do that."
She frowned.
"Do what?"
"Save him."
Luna’s expression hardened.
"Someone has to."
The other Eden smiled bitterly.
"That’s why I hate you."
Luna didn’t flinch.
"You don’t know me."
"I know enough."
He raised his hand, and immediately the alternate worlds began collapsing.
Eden’s eyes widened.
"Stop!"
The other Eden looked at him.
"Then come with me."
Eden froze.
"Where?"
"Back."
"Back where?"
"Before the first story."
Eden’s breathing slowed.
"You can do that?"
The other Eden nodded.
"I can take all of us back."
Mira stepped forward at once.
"No."
The other Eden looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because you know what happens."
A smile appeared on his face.
"I do."
Mira’s expression became grim.
"You’ll erase everything."
"Yes."
"The worlds."
"Yes."
"The people."
"Yes."
"Luna."
The other Eden paused before answering.
"Especially her."
Eden stepped forward immediately.
"No."
The other Eden looked at him calmly.
"Then fight me."
Eden clenched his fists.
"Gladly."
The first punch landed hard enough to tear the ground apart. Eden flew backward, smashing into the tree and crashing through several branches before slamming into the grass. Luna shouted his name as he rolled onto his side. His vision blurred. The other Eden still stood where he had been moments ago.
He hadn’t moved.
Adrian stared.
"Okay."
Finn glanced at him.
"What?"
"That’s going to be a problem."
The other Eden vanished.
A fraction of a second later he reappeared directly in front of Adrian. Finn intercepted him, and the impact launched both of them through the side of the house. Luna raised her hands, unleashing a wave of light powerful enough to illuminate the entire yard.
The other Eden walked through it.
Mira immediately grabbed Luna’s arm.
"Don’t use that."
"Why?"
"He’s absorbing it."
Luna stopped.
The other Eden looked toward them.
"You’re all still trying to win."
Eden slowly rose to his feet. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.
"No."
The other Eden looked at him.
Eden smiled.
"We’re trying to survive."
He looked toward Adrian, then Finn, then Luna, and finally Mira.
"There’s a difference."
The four of them moved together.
Not as fragments.
Not as characters.
Not as alternate versions.
As people.
Adrian attacked from the left. Finn came from the right. Luna slipped behind him while Mira walked straight toward the other Eden.
For the first time, he hesitated.
Mira smiled.
"You forgot something."
His expression changed.
"What?"
She touched his chest.
"You aren’t the original either."
The other Eden froze.
Eden’s eyes widened.
Mira leaned closer.
"None of us are."
The alternate Edens began disappearing one by one. The other Eden looked around in panic.
"What did you do?"
Mira smiled sadly.
"I reminded them."
"Of what?"
"That they’re allowed to stop."
The collapsing worlds stabilized. The alternate Edens lowered their weapons. Some began crying. Others simply smiled. One after another, they turned and walked back into their own worlds.
Soon only the other Eden remained.
Alone.
He looked at Eden.
"You think you’ve won."
Eden shook his head.
"No."
He stepped forward.
"I think you’re tired."
The anger vanished from the other Eden’s face. For the first time, he looked like a frightened child.
"I don’t want to disappear."
Eden stopped in front of him.
"You won’t."
"You’re lying."
"No."
Eden extended his hand.
"Come with us."
The other Eden stared at it.
"You’d let me?"
"You’re me."
A faint smile appeared on Eden’s face.
"I don’t think I can leave myself behind again."
Tears filled the other Eden’s eyes. Slowly he reached forward.
Their fingers touched.
The moment they connected, the entire world fell silent.
Every alternate world froze.
Every memory stopped.
Every version of Eden looked upward.
Then a voice echoed across every reality.
Not the Reader.
Not the Author.
Not Eden.
Something older.
Something that had existed before the first page.
"ONE REMAINS."
Eden looked up.
The other Eden’s face went pale.
Mira whispered a single word.
"No..."
Luna grabbed Eden’s arm.
"What is it?"
Mira stared at the sky.
"The first story."
Eden frowned.
"What about it?"
Her voice trembled.
"It’s waking up."
And somewhere beyond every world, beyond every ending, beyond every version of reality that had ever existed, something opened its eyes.
