Chapter 150: The First Story

The voice didn’t echo. It didn’t need to. It existed everywhere at once, rolling through the city, the forest, and every alternate world beyond the cracks in reality. It passed through Eden’s body like a vibration traveling through bone, and for the first time since awakening, he felt something that wasn’t connected to any memory he possessed. It wasn’t fear exactly. Fear belonged to people. This felt older than fear, the sensation of standing at the edge of something so enormous that the mind couldn’t decide whether to understand it or run from it. The words ONE REMAINS existed everywhere at once. The other Eden’s hand slipped from his, and he stumbled backward. "No." Eden caught his arm. "What does that mean?" The other Eden stared at the sky. "It means I was wrong." Eden frowned. "About what?" The answer came quietly. "About everything."

Above them, the black circle expanded. The stars vanished first, then the moon, then the clouds, and finally the sky itself. For several seconds there was nothing above them except an endless white expanse. Mira looked up at it with an expression Eden had never seen before: pure terror. "Eden," she whispered, "we need to leave." He looked at her in confusion. "Where?" She shook her head. "I don’t know." Eden frowned. "Then why are you telling me to leave?" Mira swallowed hard. "Because it doesn’t matter where we go. It knows where we are." A deep crack appeared across the white sky, followed by another and another. The fractures spread outward until they formed the shape of an enormous eye. Eden stared upward as the eye slowly opened. Reality screamed.

Every version of Eden dropped to the ground at once. Hundreds of minds collided with his own. He saw worlds he had never visited. One version of himself lived peacefully beside Luna. Another ruled an empire. One had become a monster. Another had died as a child. One had never met any of them. One had never been born. Another had become the Reader. Another had become the Author. One had erased both. Every possibility appeared for a single instant before being dragged toward the enormous eye. Eden grabbed Luna’s hand tightly. "Stay with me!" She squeezed back immediately. "I am!" Several feet away, Adrian was on his knees clutching his head. "I can’t hear myself!" Finn grabbed him by the shoulders. "Then listen to me!" Adrian shook violently. "I can’t!" Finn refused to let go. "Listen anyway!"

Through the chaos, Mira stood perfectly still. Eden looked toward her. "Mira!" She didn’t respond. He ran toward her and stopped beside her. Tears streamed down her face as she stared upward. "What are you seeing?" he asked. Her voice barely emerged. "The beginning." Eden looked at the sky and saw nothing. Then suddenly a vision appeared before him. A small room. White walls. A desk. A chair. A single blank page. Sitting before it was a little boy. Eden. Not the Eden he knew, but a younger child, perhaps six years old. His knees were drawn against his chest. He was completely alone. Eden watched the child stare at the blank page before picking up a pencil and writing a single sentence.

I don’t want to be alone.

The moment the words appeared, another child appeared beside him. Cael. Then another. Adrian. Then another. Finn. Eden’s chest tightened. Then a little girl appeared beside them. Mira. She smiled at the boy, and the child who would become Eden smiled back. The vision vanished, and darkness swallowed everything. Eden whispered, "That’s the beginning." Mira shook her head. "No." She looked at him. "That’s what came before the beginning."

The enormous eye closed, and the pressure vanished instantly. Silence followed. The world returned, but something had changed. The house was gone. The tree was gone. The city was gone. They were standing inside the white room from the vision. There were no doors, no windows, and no shadows. Only the desk, the chair, and the blank page. Sitting in the chair was the six-year-old Eden. He looked up, meeting the older Eden’s eyes. For several seconds neither of them spoke. Then the child smiled. "You came back." Eden felt his throat tighten. "You’re me." The child shook his head. "I’m what you were before you learned how to be you." Eden stepped closer. "What does that mean?" The child pointed toward the blank page. "Everything."

Luna stepped beside Eden. The child looked at her and frowned. "You shouldn’t be here." Luna blinked. "Why?" The child’s answer came without hesitation. "Because you weren’t in the first story." Luna’s face fell immediately. Mira stepped forward. "Don’t listen to him." The child smiled when he saw her. "Mira." She froze. "You remember." He nodded. "Of course." Mira’s expression darkened. "Then you know what happens next." The child remained silent. Eden looked between them. "What happens?" The child picked up the pencil and looked directly at him. "I choose." Eden’s expression hardened. "No." The child’s smile faded. "You don’t get to say no." Eden stepped forward. "Why?" The child answered calmly. "Because you’re the result."

The words hit harder than Eden expected. "I’m still me." The child shook his head. "No. You’re what happened when I failed." Silence filled the room. Eden stared at him. "What did you fail to do?" The child lowered his eyes to the page. "Stay alone." Eden frowned. "You created us because you were lonely." The child nodded. "Yes." Eden shook his head. "Then what’s wrong with that?" The child answered softly. "Nothing." Then he looked up. "Until you started believing we were real." Eden stared. The child continued. "Cael was supposed to be a character. Adrian was supposed to be a character. Finn was supposed to be a character. Mira was supposed to be a character." His gaze settled on Luna. "And Luna was supposed to be a feeling." Luna stiffened. The child pointed at Eden. "But you made them real." Eden stepped forward. "No. You made them real." The child shook his head. "You did."

The blank page suddenly filled with words. Thousands of them. Every memory Eden had ever experienced appeared at once. The first time Kai met Luna. Adrian’s laughter. Finn’s death. Mira’s illness. Cael’s creation. The Reader. The Author. The Archive. Every Chapter, every world, every version, every mistake, every moment Eden had believed was his own choice. As he watched them unfold, he noticed a pattern. Every major event began with the same sentence.

Eden chose.

He chose Luna. He chose Adrian. He chose Finn. He chose to save Mira. He chose to rewrite reality. He chose to become Kai. He chose to become Cael. He chose to create the Reader. He chose to destroy it. He chose to write himself. Eden had spent so long believing he was trapped inside a story, but he finally realized he had never been trapped. Every step had been his decision. Every path had been chosen.

The child looked at him. "Now you understand." Eden nodded slowly. "You’re not the First Story." The child smiled. "No." Eden continued. "You’re me." The child nodded. "Yes." Eden stepped closer. "The original version." Another nod. "Yes." Eden looked at the blank page. "But you’re not controlling this." The child’s smile faded. Eden finally understood. "You’re just the first choice." The child stared at him. The realization settled into place. The First Story wasn’t a creature. It wasn’t a god. It wasn’t an ancient author hidden beyond reality. It was the very first decision Eden had ever made.

I don’t want to be alone.

Everything else had grown from that single sentence. The worlds. The characters. The stories. The deaths. The love. The pain. All of it had been an attempt to answer that first choice.

Eden looked around the room. Luna was crying. Adrian stood silently. Finn watched without speaking. Mira remained across the room, waiting. The child sat patiently. "So," he asked, "what will you choose?" Eden looked at the blank page. He imagined writing a perfect world. A reality without death, pain, separation, or loss. Nobody would ever leave. Nobody would ever forget. Nobody would ever disappear. He could create perfection. He could finally have everything. Slowly, he picked up the pencil. Luna’s eyes widened. "Eden?" He looked at her, then at Adrian, Finn, and Mira. After a long moment, he placed the pencil back on the desk. "No." The child frowned. "No?" Eden smiled softly. "I don’t need to write it." The child stared. "Then what will you do?" Eden’s answer came easily. "Live it."

The child became completely still. Eden continued. "I spent my entire existence trying to create a world where nobody could leave." He looked at Luna. "But people leave." He looked at Finn. "People die." He looked at Adrian. "People change." He looked at Mira. "People forget." Finally, he looked back at the child. "And that’s okay." Tears filled the child’s eyes. "Then what do you want?" Eden smiled. "A life." For the first time, the child looked relieved. He stood from the chair and walked toward Eden. When the two versions touched, the white room disappeared.

Eden opened his eyes beneath the tree. The sun was rising. Birds sang in the distance. The house stood behind him. Luna was asleep against his shoulder. Adrian was sprawled across the grass. Finn was snoring loudly enough to wake the dead. Mira sat beneath the tree reading a book. Eden looked around. Everything was normal. No cracks. No Archive. No Reader. No alternate worlds. No voices. Just morning. Luna stirred and blinked up at him. "Are we alive?" Eden smiled. "Yeah." She studied him. "Did we win?" Eden thought about it for a moment before shaking his head. "I don’t think there was anything to win." Luna smiled and rested her head against his shoulder again. "Good."

Eden looked toward the horizon. For the first time, he didn’t wonder what came next. He didn’t need to. Then Finn suddenly sat upright. "Why is there a mailbox?" Everyone turned. A small black mailbox stood beside the tree. It hadn’t been there before. Adrian walked toward it. "Is that ours?" Finn opened it and found a single envelope inside. There was no stamp and no address. Only one name written across the front.

EDEN MERCER

Eden stood immediately. "Don’t open it." Finn looked at him. "Why?" Eden sighed. "I’ve learned enough about mysterious letters." Adrian laughed. "That’s probably the smartest thing you’ve said all year." Finn ignored him and handed the envelope over. Eden stared at it for a moment before opening it. Inside was a photograph. Five children stood beneath the tree. Eden. Mira. Luna. Adrian. Finn. Written across the bottom was a message.

Six were here.

Eden’s smile vanished. He turned the photograph over. Another sentence waited on the back.

You forgot the one who was watching.

A shadow moved behind the tree. Eden looked up sharply, but nobody was there. Then he heard a child’s laughter. It wasn’t Cael. It wasn’t Eden. It wasn’t any voice he recognized. Luna stood and looked toward the forest. "Eden?" The laughter came again, closer this time. Eden slowly smiled. Not because he wasn’t afraid, but because he finally understood something important. A story didn’t need to end just because you stopped writing. Sometimes it continued because someone else still had something left to say.
