Chapter 55: The Hallway Ends

Kai stared at his phone.

"...Disappears?"

Derek didn’t answer right away.

The silence on the line was somehow worse than if he’d said yes immediately.

Kai could hear people talking in the background, the occasional crackle of a police radio, footsteps echoing through what sounded like the building lobby.

Finally, Derek spoke.

"I’m looking at the footage myself."

"And?"

"I’ve watched it six times."

Kai leaned against the hallway wall, his legs suddenly feeling unreliable.

"The camera never loses sight of him," Derek continued. "There’s nowhere for him to turn. No blind spot. No open apartment doors. He reaches the end of the hallway..."

He paused.

"...and then there’s nobody there."

Kai rubbed a hand over his face.

"I officially hate this building."

That earned a wave of laughter from chat.

SoggyPancake:

I THINK YOU’RE UNDERREACTING

ChairCollector:

BRO SAID IT LIKE HIS WIFI WENT OUT

MilkWithoutCereal:

MOVE. IMMEDIATELY.

Kai couldn’t even argue anymore.

His flashlight drifted across the apartment as he slowly walked back into the living room.

Everything looked painfully normal.

The couch where he’d accidentally fallen asleep after countless twelve-hour streams.

The coffee table buried beneath unopened mail.

Three empty soda cans.

A controller sitting upside down on the rug.

A hoodie hanging off the dining chair because apparently putting it in the closet required a level of motivation he’d never achieved.

It all belonged to him.

It felt lived in.

Comfortable.

Real.

That was the part his brain refused to let go of.

If Daniel was right...

If this wasn’t really Apartment 7A...

Then where had he been living for the last two years?

"Kai."

Luna’s voice interrupted the spiral before it could drag him under.

"I need you to answer something."

"Go ahead."

"When you moved in..."

He frowned.

"...Yeah?"

"Did you unpack everything?"

Kai blinked.

"What kind of question is that?"

"The kind I need answered."

He scratched the back of his neck.

"I mean... mostly."

"Mostly?"

"There are still a few boxes."

"Where?"

His eyes instinctively drifted toward the bedroom.

"In the closet."

"The ones I never bothered opening."

A strange feeling settled into his stomach.

He had lived here for almost two years.

There really were unopened boxes.

Not because they were important.

Because they weren’t.

Old textbooks.

Random cables.

Winter clothes.

Kitchen junk.

A blender he’d convinced himself he’d use exactly once.

Life had simply happened.

Every week he’d told himself he’d unpack them later.

Later had somehow become two years.

Luna broke the silence.

"I think you should look."

Kai gave a tired laugh.

"You think tonight’s mystery is hiding inside a box labeled ’Miscellaneous Crap’?"

"I think..."

She hesitated.

"...if someone wanted you to forget something, the easiest place to hide it would be somewhere you’d never bother checking."

Kai hated how reasonable that sounded.

"I hate that you’re convincing."

"I know."

"And I hate that you know that."

"I know."

Despite everything...

He smiled.

Only for a second.

Then he picked up the flashlight and walked back toward the bedroom.

The wall waited for him.

Gray paint peeled away in ugly patches, exposing desperate messages beneath.

Please don’t stream again.

Don’t read the chat.

It watches through the camera.

He deliberately looked away.

The closet door groaned softly as he pulled it open.

Three cardboard boxes sat stacked beneath a row of hanging jackets.

Dust coated the tops.

Actual dust.

Kai crouched beside them.

"See?"

He brushed a finger across the nearest lid.

"I really never opened these."

The tape on the first box had already dried out.

It split apart with almost no effort.

Inside...

Books.

College notebooks.

A broken desk lamp.

An old gaming headset.

Nothing unusual.

The second box was just as disappointing.

Winter clothes.

Framed photographs.

Tangled charging cables.

Half a dozen things he’d forgotten he even owned.

Kai sighed.

"My entire personality apparently fits inside cardboard."

CoffeeRespawned:

AND 47 HOODIES

AverageInsomniac:

CHECK THE THIRD BOX

GarlicBreadMage:

ITS ALWAYS THE THIRD BOX

Kai looked at the last box.

Smaller.

Cleaner.

Almost...

Separate.

He frowned.

"I don’t remember packing this."

There was an old shipping label attached to the side.

Most of the ink had faded away.

Only a single word remained legible.

Office.

Kai stared at it.

"...Office?"

He frowned deeper.

"I’ve never worked in an office."

Nobody answered.

Not Luna.

Not Derek.

Even chat slowed down.

He carefully sliced through the brittle tape.

Inside...

Nothing but a single manila folder.

No clothes.

No electronics.

No junk.

Just the folder.

His heartbeat quickened.

He opened it.

Paperwork.

Official.

Property management forms.

Inspection records.

A lease agreement.

His name.

Kai Mercer.

The correct building.

The correct street.

Everything looked normal.

Until he reached the apartment number.

His breathing stopped.

"...No."

He flipped to the next page.

Same number.

Another page.

Same.

Every initial.

Every signature.

Every document.

Unit 7C.

Not 7A.

Not 7B.

7C.

His hands started shaking.

"No..."

He turned page after page faster and faster.

Maybe he’d grabbed someone else’s file.

Maybe it was a typo.

Maybe—

Every signature belonged to him.

Every page had his handwriting.

Every date matched.

The lease he’d signed.

The move-in checklist.

The parking permit.

The utility forms.

Every single document said the same thing.

Unit 7C.

His voice barely worked.

"Daniel..."

"...Yes?"

"Is..."

Kai swallowed.

"...Is there a Unit 7C?"

Silence.

Long enough that Kai almost thought the call had disconnected.

When Daniel finally answered...

He sounded genuinely afraid.

"There hasn’t been a Unit 7C..."

He stopped.

Kai could hear papers rustling.

Someone speaking quietly beside him.

Then Daniel whispered the rest.

"...for fifteen years."

The apartment became impossibly quiet.

Kai looked around again.

The living room.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

The bedroom.

Everything suddenly felt borrowed.

Not fake.

Borrowed.

Like he had walked into someone else’s life without realizing it.

His phone vibrated again.

Another unknown number.

A single image.

Kai opened it.

It was an old floor plan.

The building blueprint.

Three apartments occupied the seventh floor.

7A.

7B.

7C.

Someone had circled 7C in red ink.

A second message appeared beneath it.

Look closer.

Kai enlarged the image.

His pulse quickened.

The blueprint didn’t show three separate apartments.

It showed something else.

7A and 7B had once shared a wall.

Between them...

Hidden behind a narrow maintenance corridor...

Was a third apartment.

Smaller.

Windowless on one side.

Its entrance connected directly to the hallway.

Except...

Someone had crossed it out.

Thick black lines covered every room.

Every doorway.

Every measurement.

As though someone had tried to erase the apartment from history.

His phone buzzed again.

One final message appeared.

We sealed 7C.

It didn’t stay empty.
