"There hasn’t been a Unit 7C..."
Daniel’s voice cracked before he managed to finish the sentence.
"...for fifteen years."
The words settled over the apartment like a suffocating blanket.
Kai didn’t realize he’d stopped breathing until the ache in his chest forced him to inhale. His eyes remained locked on the lease agreement scattered across the bedroom floor. The paper looked worn from age, but nowhere near fifteen years old. His signature rested at the bottom of every page in familiar black ink. Every initial was exactly where he remembered placing it. The move-in date matched the week he’d hauled his boxes upstairs.
It was his lease.
There wasn’t a single detail that felt forged.
Yet every page insisted he’d rented Unit 7C.
A unit that supposedly no longer existed.
His first reaction wasn’t fear.
It was rejection.
"This is a prank."
Nobody answered.
Kai looked from the papers to his phone, waiting for someone—anyone—to laugh.
"It has to be."
The silence stretched.
Finally, he let out a hollow chuckle that sounded completely unlike himself.
"I stream video games," he muttered. "I don’t solve haunted real estate."
Daniel finally found his voice again.
"Mr. Mercer... I need you to listen carefully."
Kai rubbed both hands over his face before nodding, even though Daniel couldn’t see him.
"I’m listening."
"There used to be a Unit 7C."
Kai’s eyes narrowed.
"You just said it didn’t exist."
"It doesn’t anymore."
"That isn’t the same thing."
Daniel exhaled slowly.
"It disappeared during renovations."
Kai frowned.
"Buildings don’t just erase apartments."
"No."
"They don’t."
"The official report says Unit 7B was expanded after structural repairs. According to the paperwork... 7C was absorbed."
"Absorbed?"
"The walls were moved."
"The hallway changed."
"The floor plan was rewritten."
Kai stared toward the bedroom doorway.
The impossible hallway.
The one Daniel insisted shouldn’t exist.
His stomach tightened.
"What happened to whoever lived there?"
Silence.
Not hesitant silence.
Empty silence.
The kind that came from someone searching desperately for an answer that wasn’t there.
"Daniel."
"I don’t know."
"You’re avoiding the question."
"No."
His voice sounded frustrated now.
"I’m telling you the truth."
Kai waited.
Daniel continued.
"The tenant disappears."
"What does that even mean?"
"It means exactly what I said."
"The paperwork ends."
"No forwarding address."
"No eviction."
"No transfer."
"No death certificate."
"No record of them leaving."
Kai’s pulse hammered in his ears.
"You’re telling me someone rented an apartment..."
"...and then every government record just forgot they existed?"
"I wish I wasn’t."
Daniel sounded exhausted.
"The renovation documents continue."
"The contractor invoices continue."
"The permits continue."
"But the tenant..."
His voice became almost inaudible.
"...is simply gone."
Kai lowered his gaze to the lease again.
If 7C had vanished fifteen years ago...
Why had he signed papers for it only two years earlier?
His phone vibrated against his palm.
A message from Derek.
Send me a picture of the lease.
Kai didn’t hesitate.
He snapped a photo and sent it.
Three dots appeared almost immediately.
They vanished.
Appeared again.
Stopped.
Then another message arrived.
...Kai.
The apartment number is blurred.
Kai blinked.
"What?"
He opened the picture himself.
Everything looked crystal clear.
His name.
The building address.
The signatures.
The dates.
Only one part refused to stay visible.
Where Unit 7C should have been...
A gray smear stretched across the page, as though someone had dragged wet paint over those two characters.
Kai frowned.
"No..."
He took another picture.
Blurred.
Another.
Blurred again.
He switched cameras.
Same result.
He held the physical lease beside the phone.
The paper in his hand unmistakably read 7C.
The photograph refused to acknowledge it existed.
His pulse climbed higher.
"Luna."
"I’m here."
"I can’t photograph it."
"I know."
Kai looked toward his headset.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"How?"
She paused before answering.
"Because I’ve been noticing something."
"What?"
"The things that matter..."
Her voice stayed calm, almost analytical.
"...don’t survive being recorded."
Kai frowned.
His mind immediately raced backward.
The figure in the hallway.
Visible in the VOD.
Gone from every screenshot.
The apartment number.
Visible to his eyes.
Blurred in every picture.
The words beneath the paint.
Different depending on the angle he stood.
Reality wasn’t changing.
Evidence was.
His stream chat exploded with theories.
NoSleepNathan:
CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT’S HAPPENING
CatWithTaxes:
THIS BUILDING HAS ANTI CHEAT
OvenGoblin:
LANDLORD DLC
Kai couldn’t help himself.
A laugh escaped.
Short.
Tired.
Completely genuine.
"The building has anti-cheat."
"I don’t understand."
Luna sounded honestly confused.
He smiled despite everything.
"Don’t worry."
"You’re probably better off."
For just a second...
The apartment felt almost normal.
Almost.
Then his eyes drifted toward the photograph still sitting on his desk.
The streamer.
The blue bedroom.
The pinned message.
His smile disappeared.
"The first stream."
Luna didn’t interrupt.
"The person in the picture."
"They were streaming too."
"...Yes."
"They had a chat."
"...Yes."
"They had you."
Silence.
Kai closed the lease folder and rested both hands on it.
"I believe you."
The words surprised him.
Not because he wanted to say them.
Because he realized he meant them.
"I don’t think you talked to them."
Luna inhaled softly.
When she finally spoke, something fragile hid beneath her composure.
"...Thank you."
"I don’t know why."
Kai stared toward the peeling wall.
"You’ve never told me to investigate."
"You’ve never told me to split up."
"You’ve never told me to chase noises."
"You’ve spent this entire night telling me to stay alive."
His voice softened.
"If you wanted me dead..."
"...you’ve had plenty of opportunities."
Luna didn’t answer immediately.
When she finally did...
"I don’t want anyone else to make my mistake."
Kai frowned.
"What mistake?"
Before she could answer—
Knock.
Three sharp knocks echoed through the apartment.
Not the bedroom wall.
The front door.
Solid.
Heavy.
Real.
Kai shot to his feet.
Daniel’s voice came through the phone at the exact same moment.
"Mr. Mercer?"
"I’m here!"
"We’ve reached your apartment."
Relief flooded through Kai so violently his knees nearly buckled.
Finally.
Police.
Actual people.
He hurried into the living room and leaned toward the peephole.
"I can see you."
Outside stood three police officers beside Daniel.
Flashlights.
Body cameras.
Radios clipped to their shoulders.
Everything looked perfectly normal.
Daniel frowned over the phone.
"...Mr. Mercer."
"What?"
"We’re standing outside an empty apartment."
Kai froze.
"No."
"I can see all of you."
"So can I."
Daniel sounded just as confused.
"But there’s nothing inside."
"No furniture."
"No lights."
"No computer."
"No movement."
Kai pressed closer against the peephole.
The officers remained exactly where they’d been.
None of them moved.
Not even slightly.
His stomach tightened.
He stared harder.
One officer hadn’t blinked once.
Neither had the second.
Daniel’s expression remained frozen.
Perfectly frozen.
Like someone had printed photographs and propped them upright in the hallway.
A chill spread through his body.
Slowly...
Painfully...
The illusion unraveled.
The nearest officer wasn’t breathing.
His skin wasn’t skin.
It was plastic.
A mannequin.
Kai’s heartbeat exploded.
He looked at the second.
Another mannequin.
Daniel.
Motionless.
Expression locked in place.
Not breathing.
Not blinking.
Not alive.
His blood turned to ice.
Only one figure at the end of the hallway moved.
A man in a dark hoodie stood several feet behind the others.
Hands tucked into his pockets.
Face hidden beneath the hood.
He slowly lifted his head.
Then smiled directly into the peephole.
Kai couldn’t see his eyes.
Only that smile.
Too wide.
Too calm.
Like he’d been waiting.
The stranger raised one finger.
Not toward Kai.
Toward his own lips.
Shh.
Kai stumbled backward.
"What..."
His whisper barely escaped.
The hooded man tilted his head.
Then...
Very slowly...
He reached toward one of the motionless police mannequins.
His fingers wrapped around its shoulder.
With almost no effort...
He peeled the officer’s face away.
Not skin.
A mask.
Beneath it—
Kai was looking at himself.
