Nobody had to ask what the sound was.
The older Kai’s face answered the question before anyone could speak.
He had gone completely still.
Not frozen by fear.
Prepared.
There was a difference.
The floorboards inside Apartment 7C groaned again.
A slow, deliberate creak rippled through the hidden hallway, traveling from somewhere impossibly far away toward the open doorway.
It sounded less like footsteps...
And more like an entire building shifting beneath unimaginable weight.
The older Kai inhaled once.
Sharp.
Controlled.
"...Close the door."
Kai blinked.
"What?"
"Now."
There wasn’t a hint of panic in his voice.
Only urgency.
Kai had learned the difference tonight.
Panic made people loud.
Urgency made them efficient.
He didn’t argue.
He reached toward the hidden door.
The moment his fingers brushed the handle...
The warm hallway beyond changed.
It happened so naturally that, for a heartbeat, his mind accepted it as normal.
The wallpaper blistered and peeled away.
The polished wooden floor darkened with age.
Golden sunlight drained from the corridor as though someone had pulled a curtain across the sky.
The hallway stretched.
Not visually.
Physically.
The far wall drifted farther away.
Then farther still.
A hallway that should have ended fifteen feet from the doorway became fifty.
Then a hundred.
Doors appeared one after another along both walls.
Apartment numbers.
7D.
7E.
7F.
7G.
7H.
7I.
Each one looked older than the last.
Each one carried scratches around the doorknob, as though countless desperate hands had clawed at the wood over the years.
They hadn’t existed a second ago.
Kai jerked his hand away.
The impossible corridor collapsed back into itself.
Warm sunlight returned.
The hallway shortened.
The extra doors vanished.
Only Apartment 7C remained.
His pulse hammered against his ribs.
"...It moved."
The older Kai nodded.
"It always does."
"It wants you to keep looking."
Daniel had backed all the way into the kitchen without realizing it.
"I’ve worked in this building for twelve years..."
His voice sounded hollow.
"...There aren’t any apartments past 7C."
"There are now."
The older Kai didn’t even glance at him.
"They’ll disappear again."
"They always do."
The groaning stopped.
Silence settled over the apartment.
Nobody breathed.
Then...
Knocking.
Not at the hidden door.
Farther away.
Deep inside Apartment 7C.
Three slow knocks echoed through the impossible hallway.
Another door.
Somewhere impossibly distant.
Kai frowned.
"There’s someone else in there."
"No."
The older Kai answered immediately.
"There isn’t."
Three more knocks.
Closer this time.
Kai stared into the hallway.
"If there’s nobody—"
"It doesn’t knock because someone is behind the door."
The older Kai never looked away.
"It knocks..."
"...because it wants someone to answer."
The words settled heavily over the apartment.
Kai remembered the very first night.
The knocking at his front door.
The strange messages.
The peephole.
Everything had started with an invitation.
Not an attack.
An invitation.
The older Kai finally looked back at him.
"Do you know why Rule One exists?"
Kai nodded slowly.
"Don’t give it what it asks for."
"Close."
A faint smile crossed the older man’s face.
"But not quite."
He glanced toward Apartment 7C.
"Rule One is actually much simpler."
His voice dropped.
"It can’t take anything..."
"...that isn’t willingly offered."
Something clicked inside Kai’s head.
The messages.
Open the door.
Read the text.
Answer the phone.
Look through the peephole.
Every encounter required consent.
Even the smallest kind.
Even a moment of curiosity.
The older Kai continued.
"Fear isn’t dangerous."
"Curiosity is."
"Love isn’t dangerous."
"Regret is."
"It doesn’t force choices."
"It waits..."
"...until you make them."
Luna finally spoke.
"So..."
Her voice was quiet, thoughtful.
"...Every time we think we’re making our own decision..."
The older Kai nodded.
"...it’s already asked the question."
Nobody liked that answer.
Not because it was confusing.
Because it explained too much.
The knocking came again.
Louder.
Much closer.
This time...
It came from just beyond the hidden doorway.
Three slow knocks.
Kai instinctively leaned forward.
The older Kai caught his wrist before he realized he’d moved.
Their eyes met.
"I didn’t even notice."
"I know."
The older Kai released him gently.
"It gets easier to resist."
"...Does it?"
"No."
A tired laugh escaped him.
"You just get better at noticing yourself before it’s too late."
Kai smiled despite everything.
That...
Actually sounded like something he’d say.
The apartment lights dimmed.
Not completely.
Just enough for the morning sunlight to lose its warmth.
Daniel glanced toward the windows.
"...Did a cloud pass?"
"No."
The older Kai’s expression hardened.
"It found us."
The hidden hallway changed again.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
The sunlight vanished.
Darkness swallowed everything beyond the doorway.
Only one thing remained visible.
A silhouette.
Standing impossibly far down the endless corridor.
Watching them.
Too distant to distinguish.
Too tall to be human.
Its proportions were wrong.
The ceiling should have forced it to bend.
Instead...
The hallway itself seemed to stretch around it.
It didn’t move.
It didn’t need to.
Just looking at it made Kai’s chest tighten.
Every instinct screamed at him to look away.
To pretend it wasn’t there.
The older Kai did neither.
He stared directly at it.
"...You took long enough."
Kai looked at him.
"You’re talking to it?"
"No."
His eyes never left the darkness.
"It’s talking to me."
Kai frowned.
"I don’t hear anything."
"You won’t."
"It doesn’t speak with words."
Silence filled the apartment.
The older Kai listened to something only he could hear.
Then he sighed.
"...No."
A pause.
"...I’m not giving him to you."
Another pause.
His jaw tightened.
"...He hasn’t chosen."
Kai’s blood ran cold.
Whatever conversation was happening...
Only one side was audible.
The silhouette slowly tilted its head.
Not curious.
Interested.
Like a predator finally spotting movement in tall grass.
The older Kai closed his eyes.
When he opened them again...
The warmth was gone.
Only exhaustion remained.
"It changed its mind."
Kai swallowed.
"What does that mean?"
The older Kai looked at him for a long moment.
Then, with visible reluctance, he answered.
"It was hunting you."
A long silence followed.
"It isn’t anymore."
Kai waited.
The older Kai’s voice dropped almost to a whisper.
"...Now..."
He turned toward the monitor where Luna’s Discord icon still glowed green.
His expression became something worse than fear.
Recognition.
"...Now..."
"...it’s hunting her."
