Nobody spoke.
Not because they didn’t know what to say.
Because there were some truths that stole language itself.
Kai stood perfectly still, his mind replaying Luna’s words over and over.
I made a deal.
Take me instead.
The older Kai hadn’t denied it.
He hadn’t corrected her.
He hadn’t even looked surprised.
He had simply lowered his head.
That silence hurt more than any explanation ever could.
Kai finally forced himself to breathe.
"...No."
His voice cracked.
"You wouldn’t."
Luna laughed softly through her tears.
"You know I would."
"No."
"I do."
"No."
He took a step toward his monitor, as if he could somehow reach through the screen.
"You barely knew me."
"I knew enough."
"You would’ve died."
"I thought you already had."
Something twisted painfully inside Kai’s chest.
"What..."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"...What did it ask for?"
Luna closed her eyes.
When she spoke again, she sounded strangely calm.
Like someone remembering the worst day of their life after all the tears had already been shed.
"It didn’t ask for my life."
The older Kai looked away.
"It asked..."
She swallowed.
"...whether I would be willing to disappear."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
The older Kai answered quietly.
"It means exactly what it sounds like."
He looked toward Kai.
"You’ve already seen it happen."
Kai stared at him.
"No."
"I haven’t."
"You have."
The older Kai walked over to the old laptop and rested one hand on its lid.
"How many viewers did your stream have before Luna donated?"
Kai blinked.
"...Eleven."
"And after?"
"Over eleven thousand."
The older Kai nodded.
"Do you remember every username?"
Kai frowned.
"Of course not."
"No."
A sad smile crossed his face.
"You don’t."
"You remember a few."
"The loud ones."
"The funny ones."
"But most..."
He tapped the laptop gently.
"...disappeared."
Kai frowned harder.
"So?"
"So where did they go?"
Nobody answered.
The older Kai did.
"They didn’t die."
"They simply stopped existing..."
He searched for the right words.
"...inside your story."
Kai felt his heartbeat slow.
"You mean..."
"Exactly."
"People can vanish..."
"...without leaving the world."
Silence settled over the apartment once again.
The older Kai looked toward the monitor.
"Luna chose that."
Kai followed his gaze.
She nodded.
"I told it..."
"...if someone had to be forgotten..."
Her voice trembled.
"...let it be me."
His breathing stopped.
"You..."
She smiled sadly.
"I thought you’d live."
The older Kai closed his eyes.
"It accepted."
Daniel whispered,
"My God..."
Luna continued.
"I thought it was over."
"I thought..."
"...you’d be safe."
A weak laugh escaped her.
"I didn’t realize..."
"...you’d spend the next two years trying to remember someone the entire world insisted had never existed."
Kai slowly looked toward the rooftop photograph.
The face scratched away.
Not erased by the creature.
Erased because...
No one was allowed to remember it.
His hands began shaking.
"You scratched it out."
The older Kai nodded.
"I had to."
"It kept finding her."
Kai’s chest tightened.
"So I destroyed every photograph."
"Every video."
"Every message."
"I erased her from my own apartment."
For the first time, his voice broke.
"And every time I did..."
"...I hated myself."
Nobody spoke.
There was nothing anyone could say.
Then something clicked inside Kai’s mind.
"The letter."
The older Kai looked up.
"You wrote..."
Kai’s voice trembled.
"Every morning I choose her again."
"You remembered..."
"...without remembering."
A faint smile appeared on the older Kai’s face.
"It became a habit."
"A good one."
He looked toward the monitor.
"I’d wake up..."
"...know someone was missing..."
"...and fall in love with her all over again."
Luna finally broke.
She buried her face in her hands.
Kai could hear her crying openly now.
She wasn’t trying to hide it anymore.
The sound hurt.
More than the monster.
More than the black door.
More than anything he had experienced that night.
He took one slow step toward the monitor.
Then another.
"Luna."
She didn’t answer.
He spoke anyway.
"I’m sorry."
Her head lifted immediately.
"What?"
"I’m sorry."
He laughed weakly.
"I don’t even know what I’m apologizing for anymore."
He struggled to find the words.
"I just..."
"...hate that you had to carry this by yourself."
Silence.
Then—
"I wasn’t by myself."
She smiled through her tears.
"I had you."
Kai frowned.
"I forgot you."
"You kept finding me."
Those four words shattered whatever composure he had left.
He looked down.
His vision blurred.
A tear struck the wooden floor.
Then another.
He hadn’t cried in years.
Not when his career had nearly ended.
Not when his father died.
Not during all those nights he spent wondering why it always felt like something was missing.
But now...
Because of a girl whose face he couldn’t fully remember...
He couldn’t stop.
The older Kai watched quietly.
His expression softened.
"...Good."
Kai wiped at his eyes.
"What?"
"You cried."
Kai frowned.
"So?"
"You didn’t last time."
The room fell silent.
The older Kai looked relieved.
"So..."
He whispered more to himself than anyone else.
"...maybe this time really is different."
Before Kai could ask what he meant—
A deafening crack exploded from Apartment 7C.
The black door slammed fully open.
Not slowly.
Violently.
The entire building shook.
Every window shattered at once.
Glass exploded across the apartment.
Daniel threw himself behind the kitchen counter.
Kai instinctively turned toward the hidden doorway.
The older Kai’s face went white.
"No..."
For the first time since he’d arrived...
His voice carried real fear.
"It’s not supposed to—"
He never finished.
A long, pale hand emerged from the darkness beyond the black doorway.
It wasn’t reaching.
It wasn’t grabbing.
It simply rested against the frame.
Its fingers were impossibly long.
Its skin didn’t look like flesh.
It looked like paper stretched over empty space.
Then—
A second hand appeared.
Followed by another.
Then another.
Dozens of pale hands slowly gripped the edges of the impossible doorway from the inside.
As though something far too large to fit through...
Was beginning to pull itself into the world.
The older Kai whispered only two words.
His voice was filled with absolute horror.
"...It remembers."
