Kai couldn’t breathe.
His knees hit the floor before he even realized they had given out.
His vision blurred, and every instinct screamed at him to look back toward the black doorway.
Not because he wanted to.
Because something inside it demanded his attention.
The older Kai tightened his grip on his shoulder.
"Look at me."
Kai didn’t respond.
His eyes kept drifting toward the impossible opening.
"Kai!"
The sharpness in his own voice snapped him out of it.
He blinked several times until the room slowly came back into focus.
Blood dripped from his nose onto the hardwood floor.
One crimson drop.
Then another.
Daniel rushed forward, grabbing a dish towel from the kitchen.
"Here."
Kai accepted it without taking his eyes off the older version of himself.
"...What was that?"
The older Kai didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he waited until Kai’s breathing slowed and the panic in his eyes faded slightly.
Only then did he speak.
"Do you know why you’ve never seen it before?"
Kai wiped the blood from beneath his nose.
"...Because I wasn’t supposed to?"
"Because I never let you."
The answer hit harder than Kai expected.
"You’ve..."
He frowned.
"You’ve been here before."
The older Kai nodded.
"More than once."
"How many?"
"I stopped counting."
Daniel looked completely lost.
"What are you talking about?"
The older Kai glanced toward him.
"You’ve lived this morning before."
Daniel frowned.
"No, I haven’t."
"You don’t remember."
Daniel opened his mouth to argue.
Then stopped.
His eyes slowly moved around the apartment.
The coffee cup.
The hidden door.
The old laptop.
His breathing became uneven.
"...No."
The word came out as a whisper.
"...No..."
His hand slowly rose to his forehead.
"I..."
Nobody interrupted.
For several seconds, he simply stood there, struggling against something buried deep inside his mind.
Then—
"I know this conversation."
Kai froze.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
"I’ve..."
He looked toward the hidden doorway.
"...I’ve stood right here."
His voice trembled.
"You were bleeding."
He pointed at Kai.
"You asked me for a towel."
His eyes dropped to the cloth in Kai’s hand.
"...The same towel."
The color drained from his face.
"I remember..."
His gaze became distant.
"...telling you not to open the door."
Silence filled the apartment.
Then—
"I remember dying."
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared forward.
Not at the apartment.
Not at anyone standing around him.
At something only he could see.
"I..."
His breathing became ragged.
"I opened the door."
The older Kai closed his eyes.
"...Daniel."
"I heard somebody crying."
Daniel’s voice cracked.
"I thought they needed help."
His entire body shook.
"I reached inside..."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"...and something grabbed me."
The memory vanished.
Just as quickly as it appeared.
Daniel stumbled backward, gasping as if he had woken from a nightmare.
"What..."
He grabbed the kitchen counter for support.
"...What was I saying?"
Kai looked toward the older Kai.
"You knew."
"I hoped he wouldn’t remember."
The older Kai’s voice sounded exhausted.
"It hurts every time."
Daniel rubbed his temples.
"My head..."
"I’m sorry."
"I..."
He looked genuinely confused.
"Why am I crying?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew how.
The apartment remained silent.
Then the older Kai turned back toward the black doorway.
His expression hardened.
"It’s waking up faster."
Kai looked at him.
"What is?"
"It."
"You keep calling it ’it.’"
Kai stepped closer.
"What is it?"
The older Kai released a slow breath.
"I’ve spent two years trying to answer that."
"And?"
"I still don’t know."
He walked toward the threshold of Apartment 7C.
He never crossed it.
He simply stood there, staring into the endless darkness beyond the black doorway.
"I’ve called it a monster."
A pause.
"It wasn’t."
"I’ve called it a ghost."
Another pause.
"It wasn’t."
"A god."
He shook his head.
"No."
"A curse."
A quiet, humorless laugh escaped him.
"No."
His expression turned distant.
"Eventually, I realized..."
He looked back at Kai.
"...I was asking the wrong question."
Kai waited.
The older Kai looked into the darkness again.
"It isn’t a thing."
His voice lowered.
"It’s..."
He struggled to find the words.
"...an absence."
Kai frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The older Kai looked back at him.
"Imagine a place where nobody remembers your name."
A chill passed through the room.
"Now imagine that place remembers you."
Nobody spoke.
The words sat heavily between them.
"It feeds on memory?"
The older Kai slowly shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"It feeds on being remembered."
Kai blinked.
"What?"
"It doesn’t steal memories because it enjoys it."
He stared into the darkness.
"It steals them..."
His voice dropped.
"...because that’s how it survives."
The realization settled slowly.
Every forgotten person.
Every erased conversation.
Every missing photograph.
Every deleted recording.
None of it was random.
It was feeding.
Kai looked toward the old laptop.
"So every time someone remembers..."
The older Kai nodded.
"...it gets hungry."
A deep rumble echoed from beyond the black doorway.
Closer now.
The walls vibrated.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
The black doorway widened another inch.
Only an inch.
Yet the entire apartment instantly felt colder.
Luna finally spoke.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Kai."
He immediately looked toward his monitor.
"I’m here."
"I know."
She took a slow breath.
"I remember something else."
Kai’s heart sank.
"What?"
The older Kai looked toward the monitor.
Waiting.
Luna’s voice became quieter.
"It wasn’t hunting me."
Silence.
"I went to it."
The older Kai’s eyes widened.
"...No."
Luna ignored him.
"I remember walking through that door."
Her voice trembled.
"I remember..."
She hesitated.
"...you begging me not to."
Kai felt every muscle in his body lock.
"I didn’t listen."
The older Kai whispered,
"...Don’t."
"I wanted to save you."
Tears entered her voice.
"So..."
A long pause.
"...I made a deal."
The apartment seemed to stop breathing.
Kai stared at the monitor.
"What deal?"
Luna answered with heartbreaking clarity.
"I told it..."
Her voice broke.
"...to take me instead."
The older Kai slowly lowered his head.
His silence confirmed everything.
Kai’s blood ran cold.
"...No."
Luna laughed weakly through her tears.
"I finally remember..."
A shaky breath.
"...why you could never forgive yourself."
