Nobody moved.
Kai stared down at his phone, the incoming call screen glowing softly against his trembling hand.
Luna.
There was no profile picture. No number. Nothing else.
Just her name.
Beneath it, a single word pulsed with every ring.
Answer.
At the exact same time, another phone continued ringing.
Not from Kai’s apartment.
From somewhere deep inside Apartment 7C.
The sound traveled through the impossible hallway beyond the hidden doorway, echoing through the darkness.
It wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
The ringing was quiet and patient, almost gentle.
Like whoever was holding the phone already knew someone would eventually answer.
The older Kai’s face lost all color.
"...Don’t."
Kai didn’t look away from the screen.
"What if it’s really her?"
"It isn’t."
"You don’t know that."
"I do."
The answer came instantly.
"It already has her voice."
Kai’s thumb hovered above the green button.
His breathing grew shallow.
He hated this.
Every rule they had learned told him to ignore it.
Every instinct inside him screamed that Luna might actually need him.
The ringtone stopped.
Silence filled the apartment.
Kai slowly exhaled.
Then his phone vibrated.
A voicemail notification appeared.
He froze.
He hadn’t answered.
He hadn’t touched anything.
Yet somehow...
He had a voicemail.
The phone opened it automatically.
Static filled the speaker.
Then came soft breathing.
A moment later—
"Kai?"
Luna.
There was no doubt.
It was her.
Her voice.
Her fear.
"If you’re hearing this..."
A shaky breath followed.
"...don’t come looking for me."
Kai’s heart clenched.
"I remember now."
Her breathing became uneven.
"I remember everything."
The older Kai stepped forward.
"Turn it off."
Kai didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
Luna continued.
"I remember the rooftop."
"I remember your first stream."
"I remember moving your boxes upstairs."
Daniel’s eyes widened.
"I knew it..."
A weak laugh escaped Luna.
"You bought the wrong desk."
"You blamed the instructions."
"You made me hold the flashlight for an hour."
Kai closed his eyes.
The memories crashed into him.
Not complete memories.
Fragments.
Cardboard boxes stacked across the apartment.
Luna sitting cross-legged on the floor, laughing until tears rolled down her cheeks.
A screwdriver slipping from his hand.
Pizza.
Music.
Warm light.
Home.
For a brief moment, he felt it.
Then it disappeared.
Leaving behind only the ache of something he couldn’t fully remember.
The recording continued.
"I remember why you left."
Kai opened his eyes.
"No..."
Luna took a slow breath.
"You didn’t leave because you stopped loving me."
"You left..."
Static exploded through the recording.
Her voice distorted.
Kai stepped closer.
"Luna?"
The interference swallowed her words before returning.
"...to make it forget..."
More static.
Then, barely audible—
"...my name."
Kai felt the blood drain from his face.
The older Kai closed his eyes.
"...Damn it."
The voicemail continued.
Luna’s voice returned, quieter this time.
"If you remember one thing..."
A pause.
"...don’t open the second door."
Kai frowned.
"The second..."
The recording cut off.
The phone screen returned to normal.
The voicemail was gone.
Deleted.
No evidence it had ever existed.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel broke the silence.
"...Second door?"
Kai slowly turned toward Apartment 7C.
The hidden hallway remained dark.
The silhouette at the end hadn’t moved.
But something had changed.
Something new stood halfway down the corridor.
A door.
Black.
Featureless.
Silent.
It hadn’t been there before.
The older Kai followed his gaze.
His shoulders lowered.
"...She remembered too much."
Kai looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
The older Kai didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the hidden doorway and stopped just outside the threshold.
He never stepped inside.
"You asked me earlier who I am."
Kai nodded.
"You said you couldn’t answer."
"I couldn’t."
The older Kai gave him a sad smile.
"But I can answer something else."
He looked directly into Kai’s eyes.
"You wanted to know why I left Luna."
Kai felt his chest tighten.
"You didn’t."
"No."
The older Kai shook his head.
"I never left her."
His voice became quieter.
"I left..."
A pause.
"...my memories."
Silence filled the room.
"I found a way to slow it down."
"Not stop it."
"Slow it."
He placed a hand against his chest.
"It could erase people from my mind..."
His fingers tightened.
"...or it could erase me from theirs."
Kai frowned.
"I don’t understand."
"It gave me a choice."
The words felt wrong the moment he heard them.
"It always gives you a choice."
"I chose myself."
Kai stared.
"What?"
"I chose to let everyone forget me."
Daniel looked between them.
"Luna forgot who I was."
"My neighbors forgot."
"My family."
"My viewers."
The older Kai smiled faintly.
"Even you."
Kai’s breathing became uneven.
"You..."
The older Kai nodded.
"I disappeared."
"Not physically."
"Just..."
He looked away.
"...from everyone else’s story."
The apartment fell silent again.
"It bought Luna two more years."
Kai felt like he couldn’t breathe.
"You sacrificed yourself."
The older Kai looked back at him.
"I made a choice."
A pause.
"They aren’t always the same thing."
A deep metallic groan echoed from somewhere beyond the black door in the hallway.
The silhouette at the end of Apartment 7C vanished.
Not because it left.
Because something much larger had moved in front of it.
The darkness itself seemed to shift.
The older Kai looked toward the door.
His expression changed.
For the first time...
Kai saw genuine fear.
"...No."
The older Kai whispered the word to himself.
"It’s early."
His voice became tighter.
"It shouldn’t be awake yet."
The black door slowly began to open.
Not inward.
Not outward.
It simply opened.
And whatever was beyond it wasn’t something Kai’s mind could understand.
It wasn’t a room.
It wasn’t darkness.
It wasn’t light.
The moment Kai looked inside, his vision blurred.
A sharp ringing filled his ears.
His knees nearly gave out.
Blood slowly dripped from his nose.
The older Kai grabbed his shoulder and forced him to look away.
"Don’t look!"
Kai stumbled backward, gasping.
His vision slowly returned.
"What..."
His voice came out ragged.
"...was that?"
The older Kai didn’t answer immediately.
He stared at the open black door with an expression filled with dread.
When he finally spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.
"...That’s where it lives."
