Chapter 800: Chapter 800: Torture
At this point, Patrick was desperate enough to consider almost anything.
’If giving up one finger means I can sleep for even an hour, then I will do it.’
As he thought about it, the heavy door opened.
Silas entered the room.
The moment Patrick saw him, he began struggling against his restraints. Panic surged through him as he tried desperately to pull away.
Silas merely chuckled. "Why are you reacting so much? Are you furious because you saw me?"
Patrick’s eyes widened. Silas turned as though he were about to leave.
"All right, then. I will not disturb you."
Patrick immediately began sobbing. He shook his head frantically and tried to speak through his damaged mouth.
"Sorry. Sorry."
Silas stopped. He slowly turned around and looked at Patrick. "Do you feel remorse for harming my wife?"
Patrick nodded desperately. "Yes. Yes."
He could barely form the words, but his expression made his desperation obvious.
Silas smiled. "All right, then. Point toward the body part you are willing to give up."
Patrick hesitated for only a moment before raising his index finger. Silas looked at it.
Without saying another word, he took the necessary tool and cut it off for once and all.
Patrick screamed in agony.
The sound echoed through the underground room, bouncing against the concrete walls.
The policemen standing nearby remained expressionless. They had already heard what this man had done to their lady boss.
Whatever sympathy they might have once possessed had long since disappeared.
Patrick stared down at his injured hand, trembling violently as tears streamed down his face.
Silas looked at him calmly. "You have one hour."
Patrick slowly raised his head.
"You can sleep for one hour. So sleep properly."
Silas glanced at the clock. "And your one hour begins now."
Patrick almost screamed again. The pain was unbearable.
’How am I supposed to sleep like this?’
Yet exhaustion was stronger than his suffering. His entire body was desperate for rest.
Eventually, Patrick closed his eyes.
Despite the agony pulsing through him, exhaustion finally dragged him into an uneasy sleep.
Exactly one hour later, he was awakened again.
Patrick immediately became irritated and began thrashing against his restraints.
He did not want to remain awake. He wanted nothing more than to close his eyes and disappear into sleep.
However, Silas was far too meticulous to allow even that small comfort.
He had arranged for someone with a supernatural ability to interfere with Patrick’s sleep.
The ability could completely suppress a person’s capacity to fall asleep. It did not make the victim feel refreshed.
Quite the opposite.
The person remained desperately exhausted, their body begging for rest, while their mind remained painfully awake.
Patrick soon discovered the true horror of it.
He was tired enough to collapse, yet no matter how tightly he closed his eyes or how still he kept his body, sleep simply would not come.
His breathing became ragged as despair settled over him. ’Why will they not even let me sleep?’
For the first time, Patrick realized that Silas had never intended to give him an easy punishment.
The missing sleep was only the beginning.
When Silas saw Patrick suffering day after day, he did not feel even an ounce of sympathy.
Patrick’s desperate cries had become nothing more than background noise to him.
Silas turned around and walked out of the underground facility.
Once outside he found Nanami waiting nearby.
Nanami glanced toward the entrance before looking back at Silas.
"You are going this far with the punishment, aren’t you? Are you not worried that karma will eventually come back to you?"
Silas chuckled.
"That is a very odd thing to say. Did he not go as far as killing so many innocent humans when he was a high-ranking official or even a zombie? Why do you not think about karma when you consider what he did?"
He slipped his hands into his pockets and continued walking.
"I am merely taking revenge on someone who made my wife’s life a living hell, yet somehow I have suddenly become the sinner. What kind of logic are you using in this world?"
Nanami frowned slightly.
"It has always been like this. We are taught that if someone does something bad to us and we retaliate, then it is somehow acceptable. But if someone does something terrible to our partner and we retaliate on their behalf, karma will be triggered, since you are interfering in someone else’s destiny."
He sighed and continued walking beside him.
"The same logic applies to families as well. If someone hurts you personally, people understand why you would fight back. But if someone hurts your family, people suddenly act as though defending them makes you the villain."
Silas chuckled.
"Well, that is simply the way people think. They judge revenge differently depending on whose pain they are looking at."
Nanami glanced at him.
"Perhaps because people find it easier to sympathize with their own pain than someone else’s."
Silas smiled faintly but did not respond.
After a brief silence, Nanami changed the subject.
"So, have you made all the arrangements?"
Silas glanced toward her.
"Which arrangements?"
Nanami gave him an amused look.
"You know exactly what I am talking about. Have you decided on the team you want to take with you?"
Silas nodded.
"Ivy has already made a list. There are Bella and Jade, and since we can only take two people along with us, those are the two she has chosen."
For a moment, Nanami remained silent. Her brows slowly furrowed as he considered his words.
"Jade? I think I remember now. I believe I heard you mention that you do not have a good relationship with Jade. Then why did Ivy choose him?"
Silas paused for a moment before answering. "Because my wife wants him to come."
Nanami frowned.
"Your wife? That is strange. She already knows about Jade’s feelings toward her, and yet she is willing to let him join the team even though she knows it might make you uncomfortable."
Silas glanced at Nanami with an incredulous expression. "Sometimes I genuinely wonder whether you are actually a superior being. You act surprisingly human."
Nanami chuckled. "That is a rather harsh thing to say."
His words made Silas fall silent for a moment. "All right, then. I will go and talk to her and see whether she is planning to change her mind."
Nanami nodded and gently patted Silas on the shoulder.
"You should think about it carefully. After all, Ivy is not the only person who gets to make decisions. You are part of the family as well."
As Nanami said those words, a strange glint flashed across his eyes. Silas seemed to be influenced by her words. He nodded slowly.
"I understand."
That night, Silas returned to his apartment.
God only knew what happened between them after that, but the next morning, Ivy and Silas were noticeably cold toward each other.
It was the first time anyone had ever seen the two of them behave this way.
The tension between them became so obvious that even the members of both families began to worry. At one point, Silas even declared that he was going to move out of the building.
That immediately alarmed everyone.
Ivy’s family went as far as directly confronting Silas.
"If you are planning to move out, then go as far away from our Ivy as possible. We will not allow you to stay close to her and upset her because of your unreasonable temperament."
Hearing that, Silas’s expression became even darker.
Unfortunately for him, his own family was not particularly helpful either.
They also nodded in agreement, especially his sister, Talia, who immediately turned on him.
"You must have done something that upset Ivy. Otherwise, she would never give you such a cold shoulder."
Silas calmly endured everyone’s accusations.
He did not bother defending himself. Instead, he simply left.
For the next week, he remained away while Ivy focused almost entirely on constructing the new base and reinforcing its defenses.
The transformation became so dramatic that even the citizens began noticing the difference.
The base that had once consisted primarily of ordinary cement and brick buildings was gradually transformed into an advanced city filled with towering glass structures.
There was an amusement park, luxurious facilities, advanced training grounds, and even a specially designed fighting pod.
Inside the fighting pod, humans were given the opportunity to fight mutated beasts.
Of course, the beasts were holographic projections, but they possessed realistic combat abilities, behavioral patterns, and weaknesses based on actual data.
