Chapter 1997: Chapter 1994: Cast Down to Hell
The sound of the zither was neither intense nor gentle, only imbued with a faint tranquility that led one into an abyss of lost souls, then separated the soul from the physical body.
This was a strange state; although it lasted only a few breaths, Lin Tian still felt uneasy. It wasn’t the Soul Summoning Song itself but the ancient zither!
Lin Tian believed that the Soul Summoning Song absolutely didn’t have such magic. Since Qu Yuan’s work "Summoning" was written, the Soul Summoning has been passed down for a thousand years, without seeing readers experience mental disturbance.
The problem was with the ancient zither—it had a power over the mind. If put in gaming terms, it was a spirit-based attack, capable of catching both postnatal and innate experts off guard, indefensible.
Xiao Manxuan had played the ancient zither before, but it wasn’t so powerful at that time. Since the capture of Yasuo, the ancient zither resonated with Xiao Manxuan, and its power doubled!
"Turn off the flashlight." Amidst the lingering zither music, Zhang Lingyu’s voice rang out.
Lin Tian and Xu Feibai turned off all flashlights, plunging the cave into darkness with only the eerie zither music remaining. With the zombie’s eyes, Lin Tian noticed wisps of black gas appearing out of nowhere after turning off the flashlight.
The black gas was faint, like black cotton floating in the air, its origin and reason unknown.
"Such strong Yin Sha energy, continuously from the depths of the underground, it must be from your Huaxia’s ancient battlefield." The Sword Spirit shouted in shock within his mind.
Lin Tian’s heart was stirred, recalling the ancient battlefield of Xikou City. How many bones were buried in every ancient battlefield, wandering spirits with no road home.
The darkness within the cave didn’t last long. Zhang Lingyu lit three oil lamps on the altar, placed them in three positions, forming a perfect triangle, with the totem pole at the center.
There was no wind in the cave, but the flames in the oil lamps flickered as if something was passing by. Lin Tian and Xu Feibai exchanged glances, finding it all too uncanny.
After lighting the oil lamps, the floating black gas became more apparent, as if summoned, it began to gather toward the altar, more precisely, towards the top of the totem pole—there lay the Yin Jade!
Zhang Lingyu glanced at Xiao Manxuan’s state, then took a deep breath, pulling a large stack of talisman papers from the backpack, igniting them beneath the totem pole, starting a fire.
With a peculiar posture, she knelt half in front of the fire, chanting in an eerie tone.
"The blood-stained talisman burns, summoning buried ghosts, the path to the Netherworld, marked by yin souls’ footsteps, spirits and goblins of empty cities haunt, how many return from the ghostly night walks, Yin and Yang ultimately reverse, the six paths revolve in cycle, Heaven, Earth, Humans, Ghosts, eight gates converge, life or death can’t surprise, scene opens, Du shatters pain..."
With a haunting tone, Zhang Lingyu finished chanting the entire talisman, forming seals with both hands, pressing them to the ground. With a bang, the burning talismans exploded, flames weaving around and spiraling up the totem pole.
In the blink of an eye, the stone column turned into a pillar of fire, the blazing light illuminating the cave. Xiao Manxuan’s eerie zither sound suddenly intensified, like iron horses and swords on a battlefield, the killing intent hit the face.
The sound of wind rose then, growing with the zither’s music, like countless wails spinning around. It lifted the skirts of the two women, making them flutter like fairies of the Nine Heavens, adding vibrancy and bewitching allure to the eerie scene.
Zhang Lingyu’s hand seals changed again, shooting upwards, almost simultaneously, a dark green light surged from the top of the totem pole, crashing into the cave’s roof.
Visible ripples spread from the impact site, forming a giant Eight Diagram. The Eight Diagram slowly spun, emitting a faint light, with an abyssal black hole at its center.
From the black hole came bursts of chaotic sounds, like wild winds, hundreds of ghosts howling, crying and wailing, making one’s skin crawl.
"Lin Tian, the passage is open, I’ll go in with you." Zhang Lingyu stood up, shouting to Lin Tian.
Lin Tian nodded, rushing to the totem pole, Xiao Manxuan stopped playing and quickly shouted, "What about me? I want to go with you too..."
"You go, I’ll guard the altar outside," Xu Feibai said calmly.
"Take Xuanxuan, I wouldn’t be at ease leaving her." Lin Tian said with certainty, Zhang Lingyu thought for a moment, nodding to agree with Lin Tian’s request.
They both thought alike; Xu Feibai was ultimately an outsider, and his subordinate Oda Manaka once targeted the Xiao Family’s Elixir Recipe.
Neither of them naively believed that a few days’ acquaintance would make them good friends or comrades in arms. After all, he had lived for hundreds of years; no one could guess his thoughts.
"Xuanxuan, take this peace charm; it can mask the aura of the living and protect you in critical moments." Zhang Lingyu took out a talisman and handed it to Xiao Manxuan.
Xiao Manxuan nodded vigorously, hanging the peace charm around her neck.
"Thank you," Lin Tian said sincerely.
Zhang Lingyu smiled and said, "Xuanxuan is my best friend; I would protect her even without you."
Lin Tian wrapped his arm around Xiao Manxuan’s waist, taking Zhang Lingyu’s hand. The Beautiful Sky Master struggled slightly, seeing Lin Tian’s firm grip, she gave up struggling, but her face was red.
"Jump!" With Lin Tian’s command, he and Zhang Lingyu leapt up simultaneously, taking Xiao Manxuan with them, all rushing towards the black hole.
In the blink of an eye, the three plunged into the black hole. Lin Tian felt the sounds around him grow larger, ghostly wails pounding his eardrums.
But all was darkness before his eyes, nothing visible, his night vision failed just the same, not even Xiao Manxuan or Zhang Lingyu beside him could be seen, only felt by the smoothness and warmth transmitted through his hands.
With eyes wide open, they almost passed through completely when suddenly, within the black hole came a violent fluctuation, a red handprint appeared, stirring a fierce gust, throwing all three of them flying back.
A light blinked before Lin Tian’s eyes as he exited the black hole, falling back into the cave. Reacting quickly, he hugged the two women tightly around their waists, landing steadily on the ground.
"What were you doing..." Xu Feibai frowned, baffled at why the three suddenly returned.
"We’ve been discovered." Zhang Lingyu said in a low voice, her face not looking well.
Right after her words, a roar emerged from the black hole, followed by a black shadow rushing out—a black beast, its body covered in black mane, its head like a dog yet like a wolf, with protruding fangs glinting cold, its eyes flashing blood-red light.
On the beast’s back rode a person, clad in black armor, wielding a steel fork. Strange was his skin, all red, including his face, and his eyes also emitted red light.
"Ghost Wolf Yaksha!" Zhang Lingyu exclaimed, her expression extremely grave.
"Roar..." The black beast roared again, carrying a stench of breeze, causing the three lamps to sway violently, seeming on the verge of extinguishing.
"Bold humans, dare to trespass into the Netherworld. I’ll strike you down into Hell for punishment!" The Yaksha roared, raising the steel fork, pointing at Lin Tian and the others, including Xu Feibai.
