Chapter 2021: Chapter 2018: The Mysterious Roster
"Those young people, I’ve disliked them from the start, especially that Lin Tian. Just a mere mortal, so arrogant, when the time comes and he can’t find the records he’s looking for, he’ll have to beg us. We need to show him how to be a humble mortal," Hei Xin said coldly.
Lord Zhu looked at the sky outside the council hall and remained silent for a while before saying, "These young people are not simple. I’ve heard they’ve even been to the Huangquan Inn. Would you dare to go to Huangquan Inn?"
Hei Xin wanted to say he dared, but ultimately couldn’t utter the words, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"When Lin Tian comes to beg you later, have some restraint. If things get out of hand, it won’t do anyone any good," Lord Zhu reminded in a deep voice.
"Don’t worry, I just want him to bow his head and kneel. For a mortal, this is a privilege," Hei Xin sneered.
Inside the attic, Xiao Manxuan put down a bundle of records, a slight sweat on her forehead, her breath slightly quickened. Due to Lin Tian’s ’physical labor,’ her pretty face was even more flushed than usual.
"Can’t you slow down a bit? I’m exhausted," Xiao Manxuan said with a hint of coquettishness.
Lin Tian glanced at the little girl and smiled, "You three can’t satisfy me, it’s time to work harder."
"Pfft, who wants to satisfy you, you pervert." Zhang Lingyu dropped a bundle of records and gave him a glare, his words being so ambiguous.
"This way of searching is still too slow. You keep looking here, I’ll go upstairs," Lin Tian put down the records in his hand and stood up.
Mu Yun glanced at Lin Tian, surprised inside. Is this even slow? In one hour, you’ve almost gone through the records on the first floor. If it were me, I couldn’t even finish by the end of Netherworld’s collapse.
Actually, Lin Tian could fully activate his super perspective, covering the entire attic, viewing ten books at a glance, much faster than now.
However, the super perspective is still his secret, even Xiao Manxuan doesn’t know. If he finishes all the records at once, there would be no explaining to them. After reading part of it, he deliberately proposed to go upstairs, planning to say he was lucky when he found it.
The three girls, although puzzled why he suddenly wanted to go upstairs, didn’t suspect anything. He’s always been unpredictable, Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu were already used to it.
Lin Tian ascended to the second floor, where the records were also densely packed, just as Lord Zhu had said, with thousands on each floor. The Netherworld has existed for an unknown number of years, so having so many records isn’t surprising.
This time, he didn’t touch the book
cases’ records, but closed his eyes, and his super perspective was instantly activated, his gaze covering the entire second floor, then focusing on the records.
In the perspective’s sight, the records appeared differently, the characters as if alive, leaping into his view, and he, like a computer, swiftly scanned these characters.
The information from the records flashed by, he didn’t need to read every word, just the names on the records. He even saw Lord Zhu’s name, and Hei Xin’s, swiftly finishing the second layer of records.
"Nothing..." Lin Tian slightly furrowed his eyebrows, feeling his luck wasn’t good.
Previously, Lin Tian had a thought that since the levels in Netherworld are so hierarchical, the higher the position in the Yin Department, the higher the floor their records should be stored. That way, by following the Ferryman’s rank, he might quickly find it.
However, he found Lord Zhu’s records on the second floor, clearly indicating that the storage of records didn’t follow this order, but seemed random.
Lin Tian had no choice but to mentally scorn the chaotic management of the Netherworld as he continued to ascend the floors. Unfortunately, upon reaching the eighth floor, he still hadn’t seen the Ferryman’s records.
Seeing so many records had an advantage, as he gained a better understanding of the Yin Department in the Netherworld. The Yin Department is indeed vast, with entities ranging from small patrol ghost soldier captains to City Lords.
In the Yin Department, ranks like First-class Impermanence are not limited to just one Mu Yun. Interestingly, Lin Tian also saw Mu Yun’s records, but the rank recorded wasn’t First-class, indicating the records had not been updated for a while.
Lin Tian ascended to the last floor, and upon seeing the ninth floor’s setup, he paused for a moment. There were notably fewer records here on the ninth floor, unlike Lord Zhu’s claim of nine thousand per floor.
Because he’d already reviewed the eight floors below, he quickly estimated that there were less than four thousand records here.
Aside from that, there was another difference on the ninth floor: there were many boxes on the shelves, which the lower eight floors didn’t have.
"Huh?" Lin Tian exclaimed softly, his gaze drawn to an emerald-green wooden box.
On the second shelf on the left, the middle level had nothing but this emerald green box. Against the black shelves, the box was very conspicuous.
Lin Tian walked over, picked up the box, which felt cold to the touch, seemingly made of some jade. The box had no mechanism, and he easily opened it with a twist.
When he saw what was inside, he paused for a moment. It was a piece of white jade with words carved on it. When he saw the words clearly, he was overjoyed.
"Meng Po."
These were the words on the white jade, surprisingly, it was Meng Po’s records. Lin Tian had always been curious about Meng Po’s origins and didn’t expect to actually find her records.
Beautiful and youthful in appearance, possessing the Fountain of Life, with mana unfathomably deep, all these make her like a dream, mysterious, elegant, and noble.
Lin Tian quickly flipped over the jade card, but was disappointed that there were only three words on the back: Huangquan Inn.
"Even the Netherworld’s records don’t have her information..." Lin Tian muttered, a bad feeling creeping in his heart.
If even Meng Po’s detailed records aren’t available, the Ferryman’s might also be in a similar case. One manages Naihe Bridge, the other the Wangchuan River, both identities shrouded in mystery.
Lin Tian replaced the jade card and put it back into the box, moving on to other shelves. Though things seemed bleak, he didn’t give up on searching.
With Meng Po’s records as an example, Lin Tian focused on finding boxes, opening several in succession, but none contained what he wanted.
Just as he was about to check more boxes, footsteps suddenly sounded downstairs, and moments later Xiao Manxuan, Zhang Lingyu, and Mu Yun appeared at the door.
"We’ve been calling you downstairs for so long and got no response. Turns out you ran to the ninth floor," Xiao Manxuan said as she walked in, curiously observing the shelves around.
Mu Yun came in last, and as she walked past a shelf, her armored skirt brushed against a box, causing the black box to fall silently. Mu Yun, reacting swiftly, reached out to grab it, but a hand quicker than hers caught it in a swift motion.
Mu Yun’s eyes flashed, realizing it was Lin Tian who grabbed the box first. Such speed, that was her thought at that moment.
"Since it’s the jade box chosen by the Mu Yun Envoy, let’s see what luck you have," Lin Tian smiled.
"Is there a record inside?" Zhang Lingyu asked curiously.
Lin Tian nodded and opened the box, with the three girls eagerly gathering around to see.
